White woman undergoes cosmetic procedures to make herself ‘black’

Did nobody in this process, from her parents and siblings all the way to the doctor, ever talk to her about this?

Well, this is what her boyfriend has to say on the matter: "I hope for the future that Martina will continue inflating her breasts, inflating her lips, getting more tanned and getting big butt implants."

There's definite biological differences in the brain of a trans person, something that can't be cured by therapy. The sex change making the physical body match is the best way to treat it in most cases. It's a medical neccesity. The lady though needs significant therapy though. Other issues are at play.

Basically, research on why trans people are trans has advanced significantly in recent tears. Some reading on the issue would probably clear up the logic for you.
That makes sense although I was thinking more from a pure cosmetic point of view. If plastic surgery, etc is allowed then where would you draw line? What are people allowed and what not?

I see it as a tricky issue as it's so open to interpretation: I mean I see how in isolation this seems idiotic but it's a valid point to wonder if you can have your skin tone changed on what basis would restrictions be placed? Is it okay to have elective surgery to make yourself blue but not black if your birth tone is white?

I find it kind of fascinating as a principle - ironically perhaps in that I have zero interest in elective surgery for appearance at all myself.

The issue people (or at least I) have is less with what you choose to do with your body and more about why you claim to do it. Saying "I just want to have darker skin" is different from claiming "I was literally born as a black person trapped in a white person's body". The latter is incorrect and only perpetuates stereotypes ("I'm black now so I also need to get a butt job done to fit my internal self", "I always knew I was really a black person in another race's body because I secretly liked rap and r&b when my white neighborhood kids listened to Hard Rock and bubblegum pop")

Agreed. I cannot stop this or any other women from getting skin darkening treatment and I have no interest in stopping them or making the procedure illegal. I have a big problem with the idea of "wanting to be black" and using a skin change to claim your place as a part of a race of people's.

I'm not feeling overly invested in this woman's life choices, so I don't have much to say. However, I would advise against the assumption the motive of race had much to do with her decision. Race is a very American concept that we in Germany have long since abandoned and think to be antiquated. I'd be more inclined to believe she simply wanted to have dark skin rather than be a member of the "black race".

This is really messed up. I definitely take offense to the idea that you can just become black, it's absurd. This surgery changes nothing. But then, I look at this woman and I honestly think there might be some mental illness at play here. She was already having body dismorphia issues. This is different from Rachel Dolezai, who could literally turn that shit off/on like the Human Torch. She was far more offensive to me. This shit is just fucking messed up. I'm offended and disturbed.

Although you might be right, you have to realize that this is exactly the logic conservatives use to attack transgender community. Why does it matter if you think that this is absurd? If it makes her happy and it doesn't hurt anybody else she can do whatever she wants.

Because white privilege is a very real thing and if a black woman tried to do the same there wouldn't be anywhere near the same sort of acceptance and shit like this only reinforces that notion. As well as reinforcing the stereotype of what black women are "supposed" to look like. As if there aren't a metric fuck ton of different skin tones, hair colors, body types etc. that any one black woman can have.

Wow, I wonder if that would help people with vitiligo. Likely not, since the mune reaction would continue to destroy the new melanin

Even if we could slow down or completely stop the immune system destroying melanocytes in vitiligo completely (where the main research ist focused at at the moment), this wouldn't really help with repigmentation. The main goal of repigmentation in vitiligo patients is to make the depigmented spots look like their natural skin color again. This "pill", as far as I am aware of the science behind it, would leave vitiligo patients still "spotty", with the spots still being a different color than the rest of their skin.

So bizarre.....

You can't just press on a button to change your race and the fact that some people believe that it's possble is ludicrous.

Sad thing is that it still looks better/ more realistic than what she did

At the same time, male privilege is also a very real thing.

I agree with the person you're quoting, if it makes her happy and isn't negatively affecting anyone, then so be it.

Im more concerned about those huge implants. And also because she cannot make melanin, making her skin black will increase her chance of skin cancer drastically.

I don't disagree with this, and one can check my post history to see that I'm not some conservative concern troll, but can't this argument also be applied to trans people? As in male privilege is a real thing and MTF transsexuals can reinforce female stereotypes even though a woman doesn't have to be feminine.

I think this lady and Rachel Dolezal are perpetuating unhealthy stereotypes and especially Dolezal is an awful troll, but I can't easily reconcile what you're saying here with acceptance of trans people.

Again this is in no way shape or form comparable to LBGT and I literally JUST outlined how it negatively affects black people. If anything, it negatively affects trans as well because we have people making incredibly reaching comparisons to it.

Yeah the "you don't accept trans racial but transgender is ok?????" concern trolling does get real bad. I don't mean to perpetuate that.

Because this trivializes the very notion of what race is. It cannot be changed. The only thing that makes me black is my genetic heretige. That is it. Nothing I do will change the fact that I am black. Nothing this woman does will change the fact that she is white. She does not have the right to identify as black person. That is the component of this that is very offensive to me.

It doesn't change the fact that simply calling somebody insane doesn't solve the problem. Best way to fight bigotry is education, not more bigotry.

Long term blackface is still blackface, and this shit is disgusting. My disenfranchisement, geneology, and identity as someone black cant be transferred to a white woman through a fucking surgery.

Uhh, would you say the same thing if she was transitioning into being male? I'm sure there is a distinction that makes this different, I'm just struggling to see it.

This is NOT the same as being transgender. Please stop comparing the two. It just comes across as you not knowing the first thing about what it means to be transgender:

Men and women are biologically different which is why gender disphoria exists among the trans community. It's a conflict between the gender you believe you should be and the one you're born into. There are actual tangible differences between the male and female body. A woman does have a vagaina. A woman does go through a period. And if you're biologically male who has disphoria you are affected by the reality that your body doesn't correspond with those standard. Beyond skin color, all races are the same aka human. Wanting to be a "black woman" means little when there are black women in Africa, France, Brazil, America etc. A "black woman" from where? There are black women with red hair. There are amazingly light skinned to albino black women. There is no biological standard for what a "black woman" entails thus a person like this just wants to be a stereotype.

I thought both gender and race were social constructs, though? People are born a particular sex, not a particular gender. Gender is something we made up to oppress people. Just like race.

What "acceptance" are you seeing for this?
You mean besides people treating transracialism as a legitimate thing that could be compared to people who're transgender? Or from her family and friends who seemingly don't realize how badly she's perpetuating harmful stereotypes? Like the post above mine. Speaking of.

Literally read the post directly above your. Specifically this part:

You inadvertently insult both POC and LBGT when you try to equate what this woman is doing to being transgender.
