Wii U Browser Has Tabbed Browsing, Screenshots, HTML5, But No Flash

What on earth is 'Flash'?

Is it like 'swag'?

I must be out of the loop; isn't Flash the very thing needed to operate videos and such?

I use Adobe Flash Player on my Windows 7 Home Premium.

No, every modern browser which has HTML5 support can run your precious videos. There really has not been any need for Flash in a while.

Yeah this isn't surprising at all since even Android is losing Flash.

The only things I still use it for are nico and livestreams.

I watch YouTube videos on my Wii in the living room very often and it works just fine, so I'm expecting I will be able to do likewise on Wii U, otherwise it would be a letdown for me, besides I would like if other websites such as Vimeo and Dailymotion worked on it as well.

Twitch is using a propietary codec which was made by adobe. If they changed that (there are enough alternatives) flash would totally unnecessary.

I doubt I'll use the Wii U for web browsing, but as long as it has HTML 5 it should do alright.

Wii browser flash version is so outdated that it may as well not have Flash for a lot of stuff you would want to use it for.

That true, but at the time it was golden.

Pretty damn cool, I must say. I have heard and seen enough to know I want it. I'll be going to pre-order mine at lunch.

Blah Wii-U is last gen. You can already do this on.... Oh wait.. nevermind..

PS I can now find some naughty stuff in stream in the background while gaming - Gamings equivalent of the BOSS key!

Aren't there still issues with HTML 5 and videos with DRM? I seem to remember reading an article on how there are still some things that sites *need* flash to handle which can't be done with HTML 5 alone.

Please excuse my ignorance, but don't Armorgames/Kongregate and the like function on flash? Are they switching to some HTML5 alternative?

Would love to be able to play some Armorgames on the pad while doing whatever on the tv.

Browsing on an 800x480 screen isn't all that ideal compared to my 1024x768 tablet. However, browsing with a resistive touch screen will make me quite happy. (I'm sooo tired of not hitting the correct links on capacitive phones and tablets.)

Taking in-game screenshots makes me happy. It'll probably be only the 2nd console/handheld (after Vita) that enables screenshot taking by default.

Nintendo also revealed that when players pause their Wii U games and access their internet browser, they will have access to images of the tv and GamePad displays from that paused game. Player-created game screenshots are already known to be used in Nintendo's MiiVerse functonality. However, many details regarding using and saving the images are still unknown. When users pause a game and access the internet browser, the software will remember the paused game's name and prepopulate search queries with it to help users look for relevant information.
This worries me. If I'm in a dungeon on the way to boss X, and I pause my game, will I get an immediate search result of videos that spoil the boss?

Oh, I just realized something.

With HTML 5, even if the Wii U doesn't have a real media player, you can use the web browser as a video and mp3 player. You could use a streaming application on PC to make an HTML 5-based media player, with file navigation and everything.

I'm really enjoying everything I am hearing. Nintendo TVii and this seem to be quality. It's always nice to have extra features with your console. A competent browser is always welcome.

Edit:
I hope they still have the porn curtain from the pre e3 show
They do.

The less Flash is supported the better. Good riddance.

THIS x100.

m.youtube.com works in html5, right?

Yeah, don't see why it wouldn't work. Hopefully this will be a good YouTube solution on the system until the dedicated YT app arrives. I used to watch MST3K episodes all the time on my Wii browser until Opera stopped doing updates. Now not even YouTube XL will work without a video crashing within 2-5 minutes. Can't even get through an episode of Regular Show.

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Nintendo has done surprisingly good so far on getting the basic social applications right (Browser & NIntendo TVii), which makes me even more interested in seeing how Miiverse works. As for the browser itself, I'll wait for my own hands-on impressions before making a concrete decision, but dual screen browsing (one being my HD TV) could potentially replace iPhone browsing on the couch for me.

Can you browse the internet on the Wii U Gamepad? That would be brillant.

yep.

I think I'm probably just going to leave the gamepad and the charger in my room and the WiiU downstairs, that way I can just play and browse shit at night and in the morning in bed and take it down when I need to.

It really is a novel feature to me, considering I've never bothered with smart phones and tablets.

why nintendo don't understand that a browser without flash is basically useless?

It uses HTML5 though so as posted before, YouTube (the only flash related site I care about) should theoretically work as long as you go to their optional HTML5 site.

Flash and Adobe are too expensive and inconvenient for vendors and need to die ASAP.Seeing Nintendo go with HTML5 is very encouraging and is a trend that needs to start being followed by many others.

Grabbing the pad and screen framebuffers for screenshots is awesome if they can actually be used in the browser... which it sounds like it can...

the 3DS browser was a step back from opera on the Wii, but this sounds like the logical progression

The video shows another multitasking scenario where a Youtube video is opened to play on the TV screen,

Ah, I missed this bit. So already confirmed that YouTube DOES work, sweet! If HTML5 were a living being I would bear hug it right now after giving Nintendo a high five.
