God tier Golf game, and probably the most played game on my modded a1up cab after Mortal Kombat
 
Have these actually went on sale on amazon yet? It's still showing unavailable. I went ahead and preordered the accessories and a couple of games just in case they happen to sell out. I'm going to hook this thing up to my Retrotink 4K.

Neo Geo is what the mainstream/casual gamer thinks the average 16 bit game looked/sounded back in the day. I know some people who bought games like Metal Slug 3 in the PS Store that later bought the SNES Mini thinking they would get something of the same quality. They ended up playing less than 1 hour and their kids hated it.

Metal Slug is what I always associated with the neogeo but wonder about the others.

Like Crossed Swords 2, it never had a MVS or AES release, I think?
 
Aesthetically, i can see the appeal of the single game carts but they should add multi-game carts for people that don't care about that.

The system itself is ace, and a pretty good deal for what it is.

Neo Turf Masters was the name for the Western release, it's always been Big Tournament Golf in Japan.

I'm guessing that they either couldn't license the western name again or just didn't bother.

Just preordered (amazon.de) the NEOGEO AES+ Anniversary Edition and I'm very happy about it.
When I was a kid, owning a Neo Geo was only a dream. It felt like the ultimate system — iconic, premium, superb, and completely out of reach back then. I still remember playing Samurai Showdown and other Neo Geo games in the arcade. The sounds, the atmosphere, the feeling those games had… unforgettable memories.
And now, years later, I'm finally getting one.
The thought of being able to play Neo Geo on original-style hardware warms my heart. It feels surreal that something I dreamed about as a child is becoming reality now.

Some dreams really do come true — sometimes just later in life. :messenger_grinning:
 
I don't think the consoles that bad a price if it truly is what it claims to be, its the game prices that are a bit nippy. I don't really want to fork over 800 for the Ultimate Edition but its a bit difficult know what games to get with it and how long those will be available for.

Easiest pre-order ever! Went for the regular AES+ with 6 games and extra stick, pad and memory card. Excited as fuck for this always wanted a Neo Geo back in the day but could never afford one. Cautiously waiting on reviews/leaks on how legit this is gonna be though and ready to cancel if I get so much a whiff of something stinky.

Yeah see, when you've already got these systems (and probably bought them when they were dirt cheap or not crazy-expensive) and you've got a reliable upscaler/converter and a CRT TV that still works, I can see how a product like this would be redundant.

But a lot of us either didn't have the means or foresight to buy the hardware when it was super cheap, or hold on to it many years later because it'd get more expensive.

Well, when I said it's closer to being accurate to the original hardware (or better to say, what I should've said or implied if I did insinuate it was down to one being more cycle-accurate), I meant in terms of purpose-specific ICs, similar to the original AES. FPGAs don't take that approach; clearly, you don't need to go that route for highly accurate replication, but I think it adds to the whole package. Especially when you can also use a shell casing that's 1:1 with the original hardware, too.

Just touches like that really help complete the package for me. And another thing being that with MiSTER (or MiSTer, I guess), is that you have to initialize it and set it up yourself. Quite easy to do, but something like this is just plug & play, hook up the cords, insert a cart and you're off to playing, just like the original hardware. That's a convenience factor some might be willing to spend a tad extra on.

Time will tell of course, but all signs are pointing to good. The fact that it's fully backwards compatible with original carts and NOT emulated is a very good sign. Hopefully we have something Analogue-caliber here (though its not FPGA)

We don't know the exact hardware in this, but the mention of ASIC makes me think it won't be a one to one copy of the original board layout. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a NeoGeo on a chip like has been done of the NES and well as C64. Though as seen with the notorious NES on a chip. Just having something on an ASIC doesn't mean it will be accurate. Or it could be like the C64 on a chip that ended up in cheap TV joysticks but was accurate and you could add ports to connect a keyboard and original Commodore disk drive. Jeri Ellsworth did an amazing job designing that.

Having a bunch of individual chips on a board, or a single ASIC, or an FPGA core doesn't necesarily make one more accurate than the other. With original consoles parts were sometimes subsituted for newer revisions that while "compatible" sometimes performed differently which breaks some games that were relying on undocumented hardware quirks. But those were official versions of consoles by the original manufacturer, so they have to be accurate. Then you have parts like crystal used for timing and capacitors. They have a value, but a + and - tolerance. So two consoles built with the same process one after the other might perform slightly different. So what is accurate?

Having a nice looking case is just cosmetic. Same with the game carts. They look like on a shelf, and can give you a tactile feel. But it doesn't change the games in any way as they are just digital binary code that's the same as an ROM on the Internet. Having a modern version of a console with HDMI output is a good thing, that will scratch the itch for some people. But dropping close to grand on a NeoGeo and ten games is a little nutty. They could easily put mutliple games on a single cart to bring better value. Or sold it for $100 more or something like that and have a bunch of built-in games but also offer cart support. I just hope these new carts end up being mask rom which will last forever. But they could use flash and end up being glorified flash carts that can develop bit issues over time.
 
Amazon US now has console preorders up for anybody who was waiting to order from them. Pre-ordered 3 games, black console, controller and memory card. They have page for the the wireless arcade stick, but it's still showing unavailable. Pretty crazy I'm about to finally own one. Always wanted one, but it was too far out of reach like it was for many other people.
 
Pre ordered Garou off Amazon. I'm starting to think I maybe shouldn't have pre ordered over top 😂 please tell me it's alright (I like generally love racing games)
 
It needs brand new exclusive games - Metal Slug, KOF, etc.
If they get key OG Neo Geo studios on board for new console exclusive games this will turn gaming upside down.
Game development costs will be significantly less than for current gen and games will sell for the same amount or more.

*If it has the real HW, OG wired controllers, 4x3, analog out, and they keep the boxes exactly the same as OG.

AES is hooked up via SCART -> Component to a 32" CRT and it looks amazing.

I'm definitely picking up an AES+ console, but what has me more fascinated is the games. Are these Mask ROMs like the originals? They say everything is back/forward compatible, which is a bold statement, but will one of the games REALLY function exactly like the original on the AES+ and original hardware?

If so, I'm for sure going to pick up Twinkle, Tournament Golf, Garou and some of the other games that currently cost thousands. An official re-release of all of the Metal Slug games would essentially be a dream come true for me.

By the looks of it, this is going to run the games directly from the cartridge with no in-between processes of loading into internal memory, unlike the older Neo-Geo AES Gold X unit. Playion is going for console accuracy with no emulation or abstraction layers. They have apparently reverse engineered the original graphics core of the Neo-Geo and the M68k and etched them to the ASIC chips that imitate the original hardware as close as possible. Kind of like an FPGA solution, but more hard coded. Highly likely that the new release carts will use some form of Flash ROM's that replace the old mask ROM's, so I would imagine that the system will be able to operate flash cartridges. If it is as hardware accurate as they claim it to be.

In many ways, this AES+ sounds too good to be true. It will remain to be seen how good the final build quality is in comparison to the original units.

I'll wait for reviews as well. If SNK really manages to get all those points right, meaning it's really as close as possible to 1 to 1 hardware (which in turn means flashcards will work, too), then I'll definitely get one.

This whole idea of bringing back old hardware 1 to 1 with improvements is really good. In the best case scenario it could even lead to an emergence of a new video game market, provided they can get some exclusive games for their AES+.

Neo Geo was only for rich kids. Everyone knew about it but no one (I knew at least) had it.

Always wanted a Neo Geo but it was too expensive. Preordered the white on Amazon. Can you save games on the carts or does it need a memory card?

You'll need a memory card just like PS1, the cart may as well be a non writeable CD rom.

Having said that, maybe their carts are modern and have QoL improvements, But I haven't seen anything to suggest that. I find it difficult to believe they will make carts like the originals and instead use a cheaper solution in the same shell. Someone else might know for sure.

I really like this game, too. I've never played it on actual NeoGeo hardware, but discovered it due to its inclusion in SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 on the PSP.

It's worth mentioning that the upcoming new cartridge will also add the Scotland course, which was previously only available in the NeoGeo CD version of the game.

Possible, but I'd just assume they're still skeptical over how this actually works and, fair enough.

I've got a pretty good idea of how they're implementing it, but I understand that for a lot of people that's not gonna be something they understand. Maybe in due time.

Personally I've kinda had enough with Genesis stuff (hardware-wise), and I love the Genesis. It was my first ever console. But SEGA treat it like it's the ONLY console they ever made, a lot of the time.

Better to put those resources to a Saturn or even Dreamcast version of something like this. Yes, less upfront mainstream appeal, but Saturn & Dreamcast are more well-known than Neo Geo and that isn't stopping these guys from doing an AES 1:1 replica with bonus features in fact.

SEGA can't expect people to respect their non-Genesis consoles if SEGA themselves don't respect them (just saying in general; Saturn & Dreamcast appreciation is MUCH better than it was in the '00s or very early 2010s).

Yeah, this sounds really ambitious. The ASIC route is an alternative to the FPGA route but can end in similar results. From what I can gather modern SNK does have the original schematics for he Neo-Geo hardware locked away and they are using them to help recreate the custom logic and video display processor cores. The Motorola CPU is generally really well documented at this point, almost all variants are. But I still thing the engineers on this project have to strip down some Neo-Geo chips, take high end photos, recreate them in some sort of 3D software, make sure what they have is right before etching them pertinently to ASIC chips. A bug in the silicone is unfixable unlike FPGA. So, if they can get all of that correct. This should be close to the real thing.

There are some enhancements too. Overclock. Dip switch video display modes. Built in storage for score saves and such. It has the 15pin connectors for the original gamepads and arcade sticks, as well as the new ones being developed.

I am just speculating what the engineering process is, as I have no inside info. But logically, if it plays out like this, it will be a very accurate modern recreation of the original hardware. For the AES, this is what you would honestly want in a modern version of the hardware. Those emulated solutions were always a bit 'ropey'.

Chances of something like this happening with an optical disc based system in 2026 are close to zero, 10 years ago could have been feasible.

I ordered the black system + black memory card + KOF2002.
KOF2002 was the game that got me into KOF back in high school so it's always been special to me and would have been my choice among all of the KOF games on NG.
I'm so hyped!
 
I'm hearing more and more about how good the golf game is. To the point where even people who don't care about golf love playing this. What's so special about it compared to other golf games?

Easy to pick up and play, interface is very user friendly, very good graphics including some pseudo 3D effects, great soundtrack, gameplay is hard but fair, overall an excelent package.

Dude, you can emulate Neo Geo games on a calculator. You can literally try it for free before you pull the plug on the actual game.
 
Retro Gaming Cables here in the UK seem to be confident that it will support RGB Scart cables.


I asked how they knew this and they directed me to this article. Apparently its using the original AV port but this time supports stereo output.

I would have said the big draw with the Neo Geo AES+ is its 1080p HDMI output since it'll save you figuring out how to connect the retro console to a modern TV. However, if I'm being honest, many players would have bought one just for its standard AV output. Since I'm a sucker for using old CRT TVs, I reached out to PLAION to check whether the new system still supports both RGB and composite, and it turns out it'll do both while also offering stereo sound, unlike the OG. Basically, you're getting the Ferrari of vintage arcade systems that goes for $700 on eBay, new and improved, for under $250.

Wait, you never played it? It's great and a bit of a legend, it was so popular at my local arcade the owner put the cart in a dedicated machine.
I think it's good because it's easy to understand & the presentation. You get a little dopamine kick when you hear "on the greeeeeen".

Try it on an emulator. See what you think.
