Some sports related ones:

Jerry Rice still played for an NFL team.
Kevin Brown still had an MLB contract.
Dustin Pedroia had not yet played a game in the MLB.
Sidney Crosby was in his first season of NHL.

These two are the most eye opening ones for me. Mobile is such a large thing now that a number of people see it as a direct threat to the core market and dedicated hardware, and Versus XIII was announced before it was even really a thing. Indie games are also far more relevant now.

Another one:

I'm pretty sure Versus was announced before Google brought YouTube.
Youtube was BORN just a year before the Versus XIII announcement.

The most massive video sharing platform ever conceived, was in its infancy, when Versus was announced. Let that sink in.

GAF's members have had hundreds of thousands if not millions of orgasms; and not one was in celebration of Final Fantasy XV's release!

Since 2006, 5 main The Legend of Zelda games have been released (yep, a mix between handheld/console titles, but mostly developed by the same team):

- Twilight Princess
- Phantom Hourglass
- Spirit Tracks
- Skyward Sword
- A Link Between Worlds

+ A few remakes/ports/spin-offs:
- Link's Crossbow Training
- Four Swords Anniversary Edition
- Ocarina of Time 3D
- Wind Waker HD
- Hyrule Warriors

And a 6th main game is coming (Wii U), and will probably be released before FFXV.

I think this might be one of the funniest Gaming side threads I've read in a while :lol

2006 was a completely different world, it's hilarious

When this game was announced, in 2006, on the internet front:

  • Reddit did not yet exist.
  • Netflix was still a DVDs-by-mail company.
  • Twitter existed as a company but the site was not yet open to the public.
  • Facebook still required a dot-edu email address to register.
  • Getting a Gmail address still required an invite from an already-registered user.
  • Windows Vista had not been announced yet; every person who watched a stream of this game being announced did so on Windows XP (or earlier!)
  • NeoGAF had about 12,000 users; today it has about 140,000.

PLUTO WAS STILL A PLANET.

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought of this, lol.

More time has now passed from its announcement to now than from the release of MGS1 to the announcement.

Okay, that's legit terrifying.

Nintendo has released 4 3D Mario games since then, and 4 2D Mario games since with a 5th coming next year (Mario Maker).

There will have been *9* CoD games on the PS3/360 since the announcement, and 10 is a real possibility.

2 Smash Bros. games Will have released in between Versus XIII's announcement and XV's release.
Manny Pacquiao became the fastest rising star in boxing, and fought Juan Manuel Marquez 3 times.
Toonami was cancelled, and then revived.
The Thompsons are still on the air.

Bruh. In 2006 fighting games were in danger of extinction outside Japanese arcades. The entire revival of the genre on home consoles has occurred since Versus XIII was announced.

Seriously. Back in high school I was sure we'd never see another Street Fighter or MvC again. The PS2 was a dark, barren time for Capcom fighters compared to now.

You would think, being a Japanese company, Square Enix would have a bit more pride.

Aren't they ashamed of themselves at this point? Do they really not realize how many people laugh and boo at them every time there's no new info on this game? Are they completely oblivious to how much backlash they'll get if they don't show this game at TGS?

Imagine if this was anyone else. Imagine if Nintendo had a Zelda game delayed for almost 10 years.

When Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced there had not been a new 2D Mario platformer for 14 years.

Call of Duty was about World War II, the most popular setting for a shooter. The idea of having to unlock stuff in FPS multiplayer according to a persistent level or skill tree was absurd.

Battlefield 2 came out in mid '05 and featured unlockable weapons in multiplayer so that's not entirely true.

At the end of the day, it's really a death match with Half Life 3.
Hell, a fucking Half Life game (Ep 2) released in that timeframe.

Mistwalker was still making console games back then.

I can improve on this one.

At the point of the announcement, Mistwalker had not yet released a single game. Since then they've shipped 3 console titles and 4 portable titles, developed with 6 different developers, before abandoning retail games entirely and going after the iOS/Android market on their own.

Hasn't Bioware released at least 5 RPGs since they announced this game? You have to figure Nomura or whoever's in charge might be 'stepping down' when this is all over.

Apple was still selling Macs with PowerPC processors when FFvsXIII was announced. In fact, they were a majority of the lineup.

The Prime Minister of Canada was Stephen Harper, who had been in office for about five months. There's a decent chance he'll be out of the Prime Minister's office by the time 15 releases.

Gamepro was still using psuedonyms for their writers. The magazine folded in 2011. Electronic Gaming Monthly folded and was brought back.

Apple will have gone through at least six major operating system releases since 2006. When FFXV was announced, OS X looked like this:

uqJtOZM.png

and Internet Explorer 6 was Microsoft's flagship web browser.

Dexter ran all its 8 seasons during this time.

Kingdom Hearts released 6 games. (Or more depending on what counts)

(CoM, KH2, 358/2, BBS, DDD, Re-Coded)

Heck, KH3 might even come out before FFXV, ha.

When this game was announced, I was just finishing elementary school.

I'm now about to start my second year of college.

It blows my mind that this game will miss the entire Obama presidency, when it was announced in the middle of Bush's second term. Fucking pathetic.

To miss Obama's entire presidency, it would have to come out late January 2017 and after.

...God damn it, its going to miss Obama's entire presidency.

I got a bachelor's degree, master's degree and law degree, plus passed the bar and started my own law firm all in that time. Jeebus.

The Kindle didn't exist when FF13Versus was announced. Did Amazon even sell ebooks?

CoM and KH2 both already came out by that time. Unless you're counting the remasters (I wouldn't), but then you might as well count KH1 as well.

Edit: The Wire as well as The Shield (2002 - 2008)

Plenty of shows that went on to have long runs either did so entirely within this window (Breaking Bad, Psych, 30 Rock) or were still brand-new when the announcement happened (The Office, HIMYM.) Others that started after the announcement will finish up long runs before the game is out (Parks and Rec; Community will get its six seasons and a movie.) If SE can't get it out by holiday 2016, Big Bang Theory will have completed a 13-season run entirely between the announcement and release. When Versus was announced, Lost was still early in its run and the first meaningful imitator (Heroes) hadn't launched yet.

It's not like FFXV is all Nomura has been doing since 2006. Nomura has probably worked on more games in the company than anyone else...

Vista was released, replaced by Windows 7 and now there is Windows 8.1 and stuff about 9 seems to have been leaked.

So much change has happened in such a relatively short time span. The world in 2006 is radically different from today with changes in gaming and the the boom in electronic. This thread really made me realize just how much time has past. In 2006 , I was entering middle school and talking about games and Square Enix release of Final Fantasy XIII Versus. Now I am a freshman in college and gaming has affected a large part of my life. This thread makes me sad since my grandpa died today and I just started thinking about how he used to watch me play games like kingdom hearts and Jak and Daxter at his house . I'll always play games in his memory :')

In 2006 I was just starting secondary school. Now I'm in my second year of Uni.

You know what I still have faith that the end game is going to be something special.

After not releasing an album since 2003, David Bowie returned with a new album after a lot of people thought he'd retired, with a new one seemingly on the way too.

I'm not sure how many units the DS sold before May 2006, but Nintendo has probably sold north of 250 million gaming consoles since the Versus announcement.
