Predict: 2016 in Gaming

No idea on "No Man's Sky"

In terms of metacritic this can go from 65 to 90.

We just don´t know if it will be exiting or one of the most boring games ever made.

Not much fro now:

VR will have a slow start, but will be received well by the press and enthusiasts. #1 will be between PSVR and Rift.

Overwatch will be the most critically and finacially successful new IP.

Valve will continue to disappoint people regardless if they announce any new games.

Fortnite or Paragon will be a positive surprise.

Can this be real life?

I think all of it is gonna happen at some point!

Now for my Nintendo predictions:

January has the final direct focusing on Wii u and 3ds

Pokemon Z releases in March and is the final main line game for 3ds. Its a sequel to XY. Game gets lots of 8/10 scores, is criticized for not bringing anything really new, but is considered the best 3ds pkm title.

NX is revealed in April. Will be three hardware pieces: A console, handheld, and the power boost/ cloud router all sold separately.
  • Console is about as powerful as xbone and has backwards compatibility with Wii u games. Standard controller with no screen. New Wii u game pad sold separately. Can connect to cloud router via cord or wifi for graphics boost.
  • Handheld looks similar to psp go & supports dual screens. Is backwards compatible with 3ds carts. Shares same library as console/ hybrid. Needs to connect to cloud/ router for high end graphic games.
  • Cloud router is optional purchase and gives a power boost to handheld/ console. When not in use by your hardware, uses cloud processing to let others play games. For letting people use your router you get coins for your account. Nintendo states this will be there new affordable business model & a new cloud router will be released every few years, so people wont have to buy a new console every 5 years.

Nintendo E3:

Console is coming November 2016 and priced at $275. Cloud router will be $100. There will be a bundle for $350.

Handheld is coming is spring 2017. Will be $200.

Both have nice names and is loved by gamer's for the new console approach. Both go on to sell very well.

The following are launch titles:

  • Zelda is a launch title for NX and still comes to wii u. Game is considered by many as the best in the series. Doesn't have to many gimmicks. No Ganon.
  • New 3d Mario, that involves time travel thru different eras. Similar to Bugs Bunny lost in time PS1 game.
  • Pikman 4.
  • New IP by Retro.
  • New Amiibo game and new mini Amiibo toy line.
  • Smash 4 complete edition. Includes Snake/ big boss.
  • Wii U selects line. Each priced at $20: Mario U, Windwaker, Tropical freeze, Captain Toad, Kirby.
  • Metal gear 5, FF15, and other 3rd party titles come to NX.
  • Pokemon Red, Green, and Blue 2. Will come in spring 2017 with handheld launch. First time 3 versions are released at the same time. Game is a sequel & takes place 20 years after originals. First Pokemon main line titles to be playable on console!

Peter Moore foes a kick flip on the EA conference stage announcing Skate 4. Shu falls asleep live on stage in all of Sony's E3 Conferences. Nintendo NX is the virtual boy U. Phil Spencer announces every single video game in existence is compatible with Xbox One, except Original Xbox games cause that shit is hard to emulate.

Nintendo

  • NX unveil will be around April; hardware details mostly. It will be multiple machines, universal OS, shared library.
  • I'll go with a Nintendo Digital Event detailing the first NX reveal. Press will receive their own event a few details earlier, with impressions coming online about a day after the Digital Event.
  • At E3 however, Nintendo will have a big stage show. Why? Because we have big news. Console launch is big show worthy.
  • NX will launch around november in the US, december for JP and EU.
  • Launch titles include The Legend of Zelda Wii U: NX Edition, Pikmin 4 and a smaller title.
  • EAD Tokyo shows the new Mario platformer
  • Retro Studios unveils their latest project. It's not Metroid.
    Eternal Darkness 2: Darkness Triumphant
  • No sign of Splatoon 2 or Smash. No Definitve Edition mentions.
  • Hints of a new Mario Kart
  • Third party support... Japanese are willing to commit. Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Sonic etc. will be there.
  • Western support: Token stuff like FIFA, CoD, NBA2K, Assassin's Creed etc.
  • Zelda Wii U will still release on Wii U.
  • Metroid Federation Force is actually a good game. People still complain about the visuals.
  • Pokemon Z announced. Same set-up as Pokemon Black 2/White 2. Same region, different adventure.
  • Fire Emblem Fates is a roaring succes.
  • Nintendo does something stupid
  • Amiibos. Amiibos everywhere.
  • NX will be mocked for it's name
  • Reggie mudwrestles Geoff Keighley in front of the audience of the Nintendo World Championships 2016. He wins. Nobody has a clue why this happened.
  • Bill is still at Nintendo

Sony

  • Uncharted 4 is a great ending for Nate. Everybody is happy. Thats okay! Not crap.
  • Naughty Dog teases a possible The Last of Us 2
  • PlayStation VR releases. Everybody seems positive at trying it, but the mass market isn't ready to put down a lot of money for VR. It won't outright flop, but Sony expected more.
  • So what about the Vita? Sony: "Whats a Vita?"
  • New details on Horizon. Seems great, but it won't be until 2017 before we can play it.
  • No Man's Sky turns out to be a love or hate it game. Some players got bored, others feel like they've finally got their fantastic exploration game.
  • Street Fighter V is awesome[
  • Final Fantasy VIII remake looks great, plays good... but it doesn't feel like FF VIII
  • The Last Guardian misses out 2016. March 2017.
  • Shenmue III a no show
  • PlayStation 4 keeps on selling. Ain't no stopping this train

Everything else

  • MS keeps on trucking in the US. Europe? Not so much.
  • A weird third party deal from MS
  • Publishers still don't know anything about quality control
  • Konami still sucks
  • Resident Evil 7 announced. Wesker still lives. Wesker grins. "Plotarmour"
  • Deus Ex Mankind Divided is awesome

Digimon would make a steady come back thanks to both Adventure Tri and Cyber Sleuth.

Dark Souls 3 would be a good game, but a bad Bloodborne game.

Nioh would be a good game, but a bad Dark Souls game.

Persona 5 would be a great persona game, but never winning anything outside of Japan.

Scalebound would be a good game, but a bad Platinum game.

Nier Auto would be a good Platinum game, but a bad Nier game.

Quantum Break would be a good game, but a bad Remedy game.

Holiday 2016 will be the biggest peak for this current generation in terms of sales and AAA titles.

For real, I particularly see a Rockstar title, Destiny 2, TitanFall 2, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and maybe Resident Evil 7 duking it out during the holidays. Shit, E3 will be crazy.

Not to mention platform exclusive titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Gears of War too.

And if Rise of the Tomb Raider for PS4 really releases in the holidays, it will be buried and lost underneath all of it.

I agree TLG will release this year. Just wondering thp if Ueda and co. have said how close they are to completing the game. I do expect the game will be a 10-12 hour experience tops as other(s) have speculated.

That this will be the best year in gaming for a long time. And more exciting games will be announced, such as Resident Evil 7, REmake 2 will have a full announcement, FFXII HD will be announced, Shenmue 1 and 2 HD will be announced and Front Mission 6 will be announced. And to top it off, The Silver Case will finally get an international release from Suda and Grasshopper Manufacture. Believe.

TLG will absolutely release in 2016.

Horizon, Detroit, and Gran Turismo* will not.

*I'm still not sure what the scope of this game is. If it's a stopgap type of thing until the real GT7, it will likely come this year. If it's a big, fully ambitious project, I see a delay.

1. 2.5D Metroid 5 (Dread) finally unveiled, first trailer shows Metroid: Other M was a bad dream.

Said dream was a result of an (at the time) unknown side-effect of messing around with her DNA, now being part-human/Metroid/Chozo. The title, developed by Intelligent Systems, is more psychological than previous entries, focusing less on traditional exploration in favor of exploring Samus' psyche as a now-wanted woman due to her actions in Metroid Fusion and the aforementioned side-effects of Samus' DNA being manipulated along with discovering that the X-virus survived [SPOILERS WITHHELD]. The title is released as a launch title for the NX.

2. Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal are released on Virtual Console.

In continuing with the celebration of Pokémon's 20th anniversary, Game Freak decides to release the follow-up to Pokémon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow on the 3DS Virtual Console on Nomvember 21st, 2016. The title is available for free to all those that bought RBGY on the Virtual Console and will contain a one-time code to obtain Celebii. All of the Virtual Console re-releases are compatible with Pokémon Bank.

3. No Man's Sky flops spectacularly in spite of a glowing reception.

A shock the game industry, this ambitious game becomes as well-remembered as Evolve, namely that it's only remembered for its marketing rather than the game itself.

4. Starfy gets a new game.

Unfortunately, Nintendo hands it to Arzest who botches up the sixth Starfy title. Sees a fall release to surprising sales but widespread hate from Starfy fans for retreading the same territory as previous entries and undeveloped gimmicks.

5. Assassin's Creed gives the Vita another shot with Assassin's Creed: Conqueror. And it works this time!

Assassin's Creed: Conqueror receives higher accolades than every Assassin's Creed game since Black Flag, with bundled sales high enough that Sony takes notice, prompting a short-lived revival in 1st party Vita support.

6. Square Enix announced Kingdom Hearts III's release date at the same time they announce The World Ends With You Too.

During another cringe-worthy E3 press conference, Square announces that Kingdom Hearts III will be released On Jan 17, 2017 while the new trailer ends with Neku cutting it in half to reveal a sequel to the beloved cult classic "The World Ends With You" is in the work. No gameplay is shown, but later interviews with Nomura confirm the game will be coming to the Vita and utilize the back touchpad and will feature turn-based combat. No release window is given for the game.

7. Fighter Emblem announced for the NX.

A 2D fighter co-developed by Intelligent Systems and Arc System Works, the roster includes Fire Emblem characters from all 14 games. Pre-order versions will receive a special Fire Emblem fighting stick. The title is set for release on April 20th as...

8. Nintendo celebrates Fire Emblem's 25th anniversary (a year late).

In addition to the trio of Fates' version, Fighter Emblem and #FE, Nintendo brings over the first six Fire Emblem games to the 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console, with a limited edition physical release called "Fire Emblem: Legacy Collection" on September 16th, 2016.

The Last Guardian releases in the second half of 2016. Horizon Zero Dawn gets delayed which really bums me out.

Uncharted 4 scores 92 or higher on Metacritic and wins the majority of GOTY awards. It will also 10 million by the end of 2016.

Persona 5 does not live up to the enormous expectations(but still scores 90 Metacritic)

You wont see TLOU2 annouce this year or any time soon. Everyone at ND is currently working on UC4, putting another project that a small team at ND was working on early this year on hold.

Maybe its not as out there as you think!

Don't do that to yourself - what you listed could easily be the first 2-3 years of NX. At launch you're going to get Zelda, maybe Pikmin. Plus some Pilot Wings game or something.

Nah I think its pretty obvious the titles that were originally planed for Wii U got moved over to NX. The pokemon one is my dream lol, I'll give you that.

-The Last Guardian will be met with praise from fans of Ico, but many complaints will be aimed at its "last gen" roots, particularly the gameplay. Despite all of this, the consensus will be that the catdogratbirdthing's AI was a triumph, making it the most life-like creature in a game to date.

-Second exclusive From/Sony collaboration announced. It'll still be rooted in the "Souls" formula, but the aesthetic will be a departure, and it'll be more "Action RPG" oriented, thus taking it a step further than Bloodborne. Instead of the grotesque, dark, or high fantasy themes, we may see something more colorful, though still unnerving. Or robots.

-Uncharted 4 lives up to the hype and becomes the most beloved title in the series along with the second entry. The gameplay/shooting mechanics will be very refined this time around, and the more open "sandbox" levels will allow for varied combat scenarios that offer room for creativity. These improvements will keep it from being largely criticized as "yet another Uncharted with a fresh coat of paint."

-Persona 5 continues to improve on the formula and is super stylish, but the story won't resonate as well with fans and will rank below the third and fourth entries for the most part. The gameplay will be moderately improved, and the soundtrack will be a favorite on lists at the year's end.

-Horizon: Zero Dawn will slip into 2017 due to technical/performance issues that need to be ironed out.

-Dark Souls III is going to be yet another fantastic entry in the series, and the soundtrack will rival Bloodborne's. Some fans of Dark Souls will lament the mechanical changes inspired by Bloodborne, and there will be complaints of series fatigue. Rankings of the games will shuffle around once again.

-Scalebound is going to sell like hot garbage which, to be fair, is expected. The game itself will be appreciated and quickly become an Xbox One favorite similar to Sunset Overdrive.

-Speaking of Sunset Overdrive, we will get a surprise announcement of a PC port.

-NieR Automata is also going to sell poorly, but it won't be as dire. The new combat provided by Platinum Games will make it more palatable than the original, and it will be received much better critically. The soundtrack will yet again prove to be stellar and make the top of many lists.

-Final Fantasy XV is going to take a lot of people by surprise. It'll be much better than many are expecting, and it'll rejuvenate interest in the series once more.

-Quantum Break proves Remedy can still make a fantastic game even after Alan Wake faltered a bit with its combat. Opinions on the "TV show" portion of the game are going to be divided, but the environmental puzzles will be the highlight of the game. Metacritic in the mid-high 80s.

-New Crash Bandicoot game is announced, it has a relatively low budget, and it plays similarly to the classic titles except with slightly larger areas and a more extensive perspective change to 2.5D at times/for specific levels.

-Red Dead Redemption/Whatever 2 is revealed.

-Zelda Wii U/NX blowout, art direction is gorgeous. It's going to put a twist on open world game design, and it's going to be praised as a breath of fresh air in an industry full of similar open worlds with checklists. Worst case scenario (dark world prediction): It's going to underwhelm in a world where The Witcher 3 exists and already blew everyone away.

-Nintendo NX is ceaselessly mocked once revealed and fanboys melt down. People have trouble comprehending Nintendo's direction despite it being the best business decision for them as a company. Once everyone calms down, some sense is restored and many become hopeful as they focus on the first party titles and third party support which will be a marked improvement—at least at first.

I think it's going to come out at some point that Miyazaki was supervising Dark Souls 3 and not really directing it and then fans who previously praised the game will turn on it real hard.

So if you're reading this, congratulations you almost made it through 2015 unscathed. It's been a great year when all is said and done. Hoverboards are gaining popularity, Jaws 19 finally came out after months of hype, and anti-gravity is being used to cure back injuries. And of course the games, from Bloodborne, to Rise of the Tomb Raider from Super Mario Maker to Undertale 2015 has been a remarkable year for games both big and small.

However all of that is in the past now. It's time to take out our crystal balls, dress up as Michael Pachter and try to predict the future of gaming the best we can.

1. No Man's Sky lives up to the hype.
Since practically its announcement, Hello Game's No Man's Sky has been unfairly compared to Spore. Besides the fact both games are ambitious, they're almost nothing a like. Still, unless you're going in with extremely high expectations, the game will be met with positive reviews and will end up as a solid seller.

2. VR will underwhelm.
This is what's going to get my house torched. Don't get me wrong, Virtual Reality is an exciting technology that will offer a lot of possibilities not done before on either film or gaming. With all that being said all three of the major players, Vive, Oculus, and PSVR are still being coy with their launch dates and their pricing. Which to me doesn't inspire much confidence. The big problem though is that despite being positioned as new platforms, they're still very much accessories to the PC/PS4 and not actually standalone platforms. While it'll still maintain a strong niche of followers its mainstream viability is still iffy to say the least.

3. Horizon Zero Dawn: Game of the Year
The amount of times the Witcher 3 won GOTY at various outlets just shows how much we crave western RPGs. Horizon's unique setting combining a post apocalypse with tribal imagery will be a sight to behold and make it standout from other RPGs. Combine with its wonderfully designed protagonist in Aloy and robot freaking dinosaurs and not only will this be Guerrilla Game's magnum opus but a huge fan favorite among the press come end-year. Or it gets delayed to 2017 which is very well possible.

4. The NX
Okay, let's not try to turn this into a sole NX speculation thread because that's how threads get locked. With that being said it is Nintendo's biggest elephant in the room and there's a lot we don't know. Still, I think it won't release in 2016 but it will be shown off at E3 definitely won't have Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Smash Bros. all at launch. That's just delusional. Whatever Nintendo does have planned for this machine (we don't even know its form factor) will be both exciting, cool, fun and make the internet mad because it's not a "traditional" video game machine.

5. The Division will suck.
I mean it could be good but anything overly ambitious made by Ubisoft has tend to fallen flat on its face. See Watch_Dogs and Assassin's Creed Unity

What are your predictions? Share Below.

P.S. Specific predictions people, no "Some games will exist" or "games will be delayed" at least try have some fun.

Confirmation bias much?

Exciting new technology that has already been extensively demoed and 'out there' vs. literally a complete unknown who's last home console platform bombed.

I mean seriously. At this point 3 years ago journos got their invites to a Playstation event that featured neither the form factor nor price. OR is most likely going to go pre-order live with a price at CES, Vive & PSVR over the next 2 quarters.

Anyway, OT:

NMS will be amazeballs.

Horizon will also be amazeballs.

UC4 will be loved by most people, and voiciferously criticised across several threads for Drake the mass murderer and ND being 'racist' in their VO casting, despite the issue already having been both heavily discussed and already explained by Neil Druckman.

The Division will be a buggy mess at launch and Ubi will be bought by Vivendi and turned into a mobile game reskinning operation.

- NX Zelda will be awesome. Awesome.
- Xbox Slim will release with no disc drive at $180.
- Some games will be delayed like Crackdown and Horizon.
- Quantum Break will kick ass and take names.
- MS finally announces a new WRPG exclusive franchise.
- Sony bring back Onimusha home to PS4. Reboot!
- Capcom remember they make games.

1. NX will have a more successful launch then Wii U.

2. VR will be off to a slow start. Much like PS3 erased Sony's previous profits, PS VR will erase any PS4 profits.

3. Humble Bundle will continue to be awesome. Perhaps a Namco or Bethesda bundle

4. Steam Machines will pretty much be done with, the Alpha being the only quiet exception.

5. The Steam controller will be refreshed, and an all around improvement over the original.

6. Halo will return to PC.

7. Crash Bandicoot PS4 will be teased

1) Squadron 42 will be the best single player space action combat game since...Freespace 2. People will learn of the Vanduul.

2) The Division won't suck

3) Uncharted 4 will be runner up for game of the year

4) Xcom 2 will also be runner up for game of the year

Mass Effect: Andromeda comes out and makes me happy.

Microsoft puts out an even better E3 conference than last year with even more surprises.

More shit. Interesting games from small companies will continue to keep the industry going, whilt a ton of shit thrid person rubbish is lapped up by gamers interested in graphics.

Nintendo will continue to make awesome games and lots of cash but still be doomed.

There'll be tons of interesting stuff released that'll sell well, but ignored.

at least 2 assasins creeds games will come out, they're crap - kids buy them.

Crackdown, Horizon, and TLG will not release in 2016.

Uncharted 4 will most likely be the GOTY from many outlets, and it will generally live up to the hype.

Persona 5 will live up to the hype, while the Division will not.

Don't expect NX to launch in 2016.

VR (PSVR, Rift, etc.), while being innovative and exciting, will not do well at all commercially because of high price and being a peripheral.

I'm sure he started years ago.

I'm sure he's been brainstorming PS5 architecture for a few years now, what I meant was, implementing his ideas into actual hardware development.

PS4's earliest phase of development started in 2008, two years after PS3 released. Cerny and PS architecture team did a postmortem of PS3, to look at what worked well and especially what did not work for developers. They asked questions about what devs wanted in the future. Given that AMD's Graphics Core Next GPU architecture, for Radeon 7000 series,, was presented publicly in June 2011, GCN is the foundation of both current consoles. I'd say PS4's main years of development were 2009 through 2011, wrapping up in 2012 with the last major decision being 8GB GDDR5.

I'd think PS5's main hw development would span 2016 to 2018, for release in 2019-2020.

Back to predictions for 2016 - Nintendo: Will talk about NX in March-April. Showcase at E3 on stage and also Direct in June. No prediction from me about hardware releases(s).
Zelda Wii U will be on Wii U and NX but don't want to predict when the NX version comes out.

Nintendo will continue to make western Dragon Quest fans happy with announcement of 3DS version for 2017.

I think all of it is gonna happen at some point!

Now for my Nintendo predictions:

Pokemon Z releases in March and is the final main line game for 3ds. Its a sequel to XY. Game gets lots of 8/10 scores, is criticized for not bringing anything really new, but is considered the best 3ds pkm title.

I assume that Snake returning to Smash & Pokémon R/G/B2 is just you being hopeful, right?

The NX is revealed at E3 and will be released on November 2017 with Animal Crossing NX and Mario NX as launch titles.

Wii U will have Pokken, Starfox Zero, Zelda U, Giant Robot, Monster Hunter X-U, Pikmin 4 and Bayonetta 3.

Nah I think its pretty obvious the titles that were originally planed for Wii U got moved over to NX. The pokemon one is my dream lol, I'll give you that.

Well, it would literally blow out every other console launch in history several times over. So I'm rooting for ya. :p

All these mentions of DMC5 and RE7.... Capcom higher ups would laugh their asses off reading through this thread.

Capcom is dead guys, let it go. You'll get a logo for DMC's 15th anniversary and you will like it.

Retro is working on Diddy Kong. The sooner you all accept it the better, or else we'll see riots in June.

I don't see how Wii U has another holiday season in it. It seems really unlikely they would make Zelda a Wii U-only holiday tentpole release and not recoup some of the development cost by releasing it for NX around the same time, and...I just don't see NX releasing in November 2017 with Nintendo's promise to return to Nintendo-like profits in 2016 (if I'm remembering right). I would be really surprised if we don't see NX this holiday season in some form at least.

- Sony live up to E3 hype by announcing Crash Bandicoot, Agent and TLG game realease announcment after the end of the conference.

Well, at least Crash was at E3 (sorta).

- A DLC character for SFV will win EVO and Capcom Cup (Not necessarily the same)

Well I was wrong with EVO, but half right with Capcom Cup since NuckleDU also+ used Guile during the tournament

- Hideo Kojima new Game it's in some way Silent Hills
Not the way I was thinking, but Norman Reedus and Guillermo del Toro are in it. So...

- Metroid 4 it's a game launch for NX

TBD but looks like i'll be wrong. Will see January 12.

- Bayonetta 3 goes back to multiplatform

TBD. Don't think this will have a resolution in the near future.

- Mirror's Edge grants at least 2 Games of the Year from reconized game sites.

It hurts me so much cuz it wasn't even close... One of my favourites last gen games... I was so hopeful and what we got wasn't what this concept deserved...

- Uncharted 4 isn't the end of Nathan, his brother or Sully.

Still haven't play U4 , but I think I was right.

- ReCore and Horizon: Zero Dawn get delayed.

Easy bet. Recore wasn't as big as Horizon.

- New Sonic, multiplatform and it's Adventure 3 (And finally good).

Well. more or less true. There's a new Sonic, it's multiplatform (Not just nintendo). But doesn't look like Adventure 3 and will see if it's good.

Also Sonicmania!!!
- Valve announces Vive starter pack with Portal 3.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
- For Honor it's the new Splatoon and becomes e-Sport.
I think it has potential to be, but guess the delay hasn't helped.
- Mass Effect Andromeda it's the new Batman/Fallout 4.
By the reception people it's giving to it, totally possible.
- New God of War isn't set on greek mythology.
Easy bet.
- KH3 worlds confirmed: Frozen, Toy Story, Dumbo, The Jungle Book.
0 Kh3 info thanks to FFXV delay making 2.8 also to delay
- Resident Evil 7 and Devil May Cry 5 are PS4 console exclusives.
Wrong with RE7 and DMC not found, so...
- MS creates a new IP wtih potential to be their new Halo.
No way.
- Ryse 2 multiplatform (And having complex game mechanics).
Nothing to be found
- Overwatch starts to threat LoL (And it's more played than Dota and CS:GO in Steam).

I've not been involved with eSports this year (beside SFV and not that much) So I don't know where this stands.

The shortages of virtual reality headsets will create a micro Wii like sensation with stories of scalpers obtaining dozens of units to resell at twice the asking price. People will be injured wearing the device creating a viral sensation.

Toys to Life market will dry up like Ty beanie babies did.

Overwatch, Fortnite and TitanFall 2's success will be short lived because it exists outside Steam. They remain profitable.

Steam introduces fortnightly blood tests for using Steam Community.

Jon Carmack leaves Oculus.

Hacking among gaming websites and services continues.

Nintendo is not forthcoming about the NX during its reveal. It highlights telltale signs of the same old Nintendo making the same old mistakes.
Well I was dead wrong about Overwatch and Carmack. Jury is still out on Fortnite and Nintendo. Interesting. I hope we do this thread again.
