Super Mario Odyssey trailer (October 27th)

Just got back from playing the demo.

Currently putting together the video now and it'll be up later today... but I'll tell you this.

I pretty much used the entire 10 minutes I got to play to just mess around with Marios movement and explore the map. And this is EASILY the best Mario has felt in 3D since Sunshine. Like it's not even close.

I really think speedrunners are going to have a good time with this. Rolling is awesome. Diving is awesome. Everything is snappy and quick versus the more laggy and slow Galaxy and 3D World movement.

I even successfully did a sequence break by triple jumping over a wall instead of taking over a bullet bill with my hat and going the long way. Nintendo rep was piiiiisssssseeeeedddddd.

So yeah it was fucking great. vid coming soon!

Why would the rep be pissed? A dev would lose his shit. In a good way. I don't know if it's a popular belief, but devs love speedrun strats. At least from my experience.

They showed Harriet in Tostarena and Mecha Wiggler in New Donk City. Both awarded Grand Moons.

there is also that weird statue-like boss in the E3 trailer, that mario fight as a hand, possibly the main boss of
sand kingdom, which he froze over for some reason

Some are speculating that there's 6, based on some of the materials released, but I think it is clearly a map of just one hemisphere. I'd say ~12 or so, and somewhere between 20-50 moons in each?

6 worlds shown so far, 20+ moons found in just the one world that was playable with a whole bunch more hinted at.

No way there are 12 kingdoms. That is way too long and would probably cause the game to drag, the density of the 2 Kingdoms we have seen so far is immense. I can't imagine the same level of quality for 10 other Kingdoms.

Haven't watched any Treehouse footage, as I want everything to be fresh when I pick it up (DAY BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY!) but it hasn't left my memory since watching that trailer yesterday. EXCITE!

Why is everyone losing their shirts over a magic hat. Mario? How about a normal awesome Mario game...
Maybe that would be boring because Mario games have been "normal" for a while now? I mean, Galaxy is a few years back now.

Mario is at his best when he's in an ambitious game like this one.

The mario odyssey jokes I've been seeing are funny as hell!

That said I really hope they don't lock luigi behind a 13 dollar amiibo. Not liking that AMA reddit response by the director

If there's one thing I've learned about internet opinions towards Mario world amount since Galaxy 1, people always underestimate the amount. I don't know how many kingdoms will be in this game but given it's Nintendo and what they can pack into Mario titles, I can see it being more than most expect.

What the hell is a "normal" Mario game?

A perfect platform game like Super Mario world. But use the power of the new console to make it something that couldn't be done on the Snes. I want to be Mario not everything else in the world!!

That said I'm sure it won't disappoint most. But I can't be the only one that doesn't want to control a dinosaur with a Mario hat 🎩 on it?

You should check this game out:

Well I hope you never used yoshi in super Mario world...

You've had plenty of those games over the years, and you'll get plenty more in the future. Why be upset that we're getting a style of Mario we don't often get?

And also, don't underestimate the amount of "normal" Mario gameplay you'll be able to get out of this game. Seeing as how they've given Mario back a lot of his more acrobatic moves, I'm sure there will be plenty of ways for us to skip using power ups with challenging platforming and extra skill.

You mean the game that's big gimmick was.... riding a dinosaur?

Lol, what exactly went down?

hah, I'm over exaggerating. It was more his priceless silence followed by "Oh... I guess you can" after he literally said "you can't make it over by jumping bud. why don't you try taking over a bullet bill?"

Yeah, 12 is probably a bit high. I really doubt they've shown almost all the worlds so far, though.

Bring me October.

As for worries about Moon distribution and big challenges awarding functionally the same thing as little hidden easter eggs, I don't mind it personally because from what we know of the game's overall structure it just sounds like Nintendo's main way of handling variable difficulty and time investment. Moons power the ship, which unlocks new Kingdoms, just like Stars and Shines before it, and they've already said that the game contains more moons than what you'd ever need to travel onward and ultimately beat the game, again just like previous games.

So, for players who aren't as experienced or don't want to take on the stricter platforming challenges, you can just relax and freely explore the levels as playgrounds, hunting down little secrets or solving puzzles and still progress through the various environments and reach the end of the game. For those looking for the challenge, meanwhile, the challenge is still there for you, and obviously there are going to be further gains to be had by clearing everything instead of just the bare minimum. Judging by the likes of Galaxy and 3-D World/Land, I'd guess that collecting all Moons give you access to a Luigi playthrough, or something similar. All this distribution does is give players more choice in how they want to play, which I'm fine with.

Exactly.

Nintendo handles difficulty in 3D Mario games very well. It's a series for a vast audience of players with different levels of skill.

Gonna try to play this again first thing tomorrow morning. Not gonna wait 3 hours again but 10 minutes was just not enough.
What'd you think? I have a friend trying to convince me that it's one of the worst controlling Mario game he's ever played and the visuals are Dreamcast quality. While style is subjective, I have a really hard time believing the first part.

The real question here is: If Motokura is directing and Koizumi producing, what is Koichi Hayashida doing?

Koizumi is a Deputy General Manager of Nintendo EPD, specifically in charge of all the Tokyo teams. I'd guess Hayashida is more of a "direct producer" on this game, whereas Koizumi is more akin to an overseeing producer.

Yup. May also allow them to ramp up the difficulty faster. By giving players the opportunity to choose which moons they do and don't get, they can avoid a 3D world-like situation where people complain about the game being too easy until the very end.

This does seem like the kinda game where you'll get out of it what you put into it.

Anth0ny is about to post a video explaining/showing mario's moveset. Unlike most people, who spend most of their 10 minutes with the game just moving mario with the analog stick and jumping with "a" (aside from trying the hat abilities), he actually tried mario's other moves and when he could or couldn't use them.

edit:

posting again, hope you see it this time:

Anth0ny, did you try if sunshine specific moves were in? the spin jump (360º on the analog stick +"a") and simply spinning in mid-air (360º on the analog stick in mid-air) or the spinning wall kick (jump toward a wall, and as you touch it, 360º on the analog stick + "a") ?

For example, in sunshine, you could do: slightly press "a" (little short hop), quickly rotate analog stick, keep holding forward, finally press "a" as soon as you land. It was a much quicker way of doing a triple jump, as you didn't have to use your second jump prior to it. I don't know if you remember it.

Okay, gathered all Moons I was able to find in the SAND KINGDOM throughout the vids (with some added spec). If I missed anything be sure to tell me. Sorry for the low quality pics!

Anth0ny, did you try if sunshine specific moves were in? the spin jump (360º on the analog stick + a) and simply spinning in mid-air (360º on the analog stick in mid-air). The second one allowed you to do an instant triple jump upon landing in sunshine.
Saw a video where someone said the spin jump is back from Sunshine, but there wasn't any footage. Not sure about spinning in mid-air either.
