NeoGAF, welcome to .webm - the FUTURE (of burning out your CPU)

The fuck. My firefox updated the plugin by itself, now the fucking thing is opening all the files and frying my cpu.

How do I go back to the regular version with the play button?

Gave this a try with some Infamous footage, thought night time with particles is a good way to test for compression and artifacting. Here's the result (quality was at 10, bitrate at 10 as well). Works really nicely. Well done.

I stared for a good 30 seconds on this, nice scene and the settings make it look great! :D And I'm glad my script seems to work well and can be of use :)

Ha! Yeah, no doubt... :) Staggering amount of customization!!

This so much! :D I'm going as far and say that they seem to have made the definite version of a character editor, there seems nothing you can't do! I already told my friend "Thanks for showing me this, now I will always think of any other editor as crap when I use one :(" :p

When has anyone on GAF expressed their love for WebM? You're acting like it's been a popular thing. Fact: There would not be 3 hot threads on WebM (2 on OT, one here) if 4chan didn't announce they supported it.

No I'm not, when did I say this is something that has been popular? I'm trying to say that yes 4chan is the reason a lot of people heard about it. The reason it's gaining popularity however is because the format is so much fundamentally better than gif. Not that everyone is jumping on the 4chan (its now supported!!!) bandwagon. I now realize we are saying essentially the same thing now, but this format is gaining popularity on this site because of the format no one cares about 4chan. If you need proof just look at all the people on the first pages of these threads in awe of how good they look. No one is saying oh this is really cool because 4chan supports it!

I didn't have a clue it existed till that 4chan thread popped up. I didn't get excited because 4chan did it, I got excited because it brought WebM to my attention.

Click/ hover to play is fantastic.

My God, who ever invented this deserves a medal, a billion dollars, an epic steak dinner and infinite blow jobs.

Agreed, 100%! I don't think I'll ever be able to go back, after seeing that. It's insane!! Hope it gets released in North America... Shouldn't be too hard convincing someone to localize this beauty of a game, right? ^_^

Scrooged

Totally wronger about Nintendo's business decisions.

Yeah, we're kinda talking past each other. I'm not saying that people just love whatever 4chan does. The point I was making was that nobody knew about WebM and no major sites have used it because it's not a tenable format to use just yet. People are finding clever ways to make it mostly work in certain browsers now, and that's cool. But I don't think it's the Next Big Thing.

Try the script I posted a bit above, it supports milliseconds :)

Hadn't seen that, thanks man!

I tried it with the original file, but no dice as well. Tried a different video and it worked

Here's the result (from random C&C3 Red Alert Trailer I had here, should have audio)

http://a.pomf.se/zxlwer.webm

And then I tried converting the music video to mp4 then using your bat, it worked! Here's the result (also works as a thank you, teehee)

http://a.pomf.se/pbpnxi.webm

(this is from Miwa's music video "Kiss you", as I'm sure someone might ask)

So all in all, your bat works great once setup, props for it, cheers dude

This thread title amuses me after my laptop got really loud post installing the Chrome plug-in.

I was like, "what the fuck is using 70% of my CPU"?

Oh.

I agree man, no harm intended if I came off abrasive. We were definitely talking in circles. I don't see any way this replaces gifs on this or any other site other. However this is my much preferred alternative if possible.

OK so this format is awesome. This thread should be archived so my kid can be like "wow you thought that shit was good?"

Is there a thread somewhere showing some of the first gifs and people shitting their pants over them?

Ehehe I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way and I surely hope so, I mean it could be quite successful if the rest of the game works as well too :)

Another test and this time at a higher framerate and completely different game. Works really well (and VP9 would be lovely).

Holy, Crysis 3 looks amazing in WebM o.o Glad my script holds up! And I updated the script in the post now with a VP8/9 toggle! :)

Hadn't seen that, thanks man!

You're welcome! And if that didn't worked it must have been something with the video yeah :/

I wanted to encode some fighting games (3D fighters in paticular look way better at 60fps), but the only raw footage I had laying around was from Aquapazza. So here is some waifu on waifu crime in that new 720p and 60fps goodness:

http://a.pomf.se/vmpfpf.webm

This was harder to encode properly than I originally thought it would be, due to how similar the background is, and how the color inversion (and sudden change out) can screw with the encoder. Still not real happy with it, to be honest. I'll see if I can get some footage recorded from 3D games (like VF5:FS, TTT2, DoA5U, etc.) later tonight.

Surely WEBP would be a more suitable GIF replacement? These WEBM files are videos. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but they do serve different purposes. Like, you probably wouldn't want a full page of these playing all at once, like you often see with GIFs.

I think GIFs are still fine for low quality reactions gifs and such. However webm is more suited for gaming clips than gifs where HD quality, 60fps and even audio are welcome additions.

It's not really a GIF replacement because it will piss off copyright holders. Especially short youtube clips with audio ideal for this format stealing their ad revenue. Then ppl posting screener rips and spoilers all over the place.

Here is the 4 chan restrictions:

Are you asking for full WebM support or something like 4chan's WebM support?
The former means allowing users to upload full-fledged videos (you know, video, audio, play, pause, volume, etc.); the latter means introducing some severe limitations on the format so people don't abuse it:

We only accept WebM files with one video stream and no audio streams, that are shorter than 120 seconds long, no larger than 2048x2048 pixels, and less than 3 MB in size.

So I can see same/similar restrictions here. ppl posting high quality screener rip spoilers. A big no no as I predicted, I don't see that sort of thing being allowed here.

Have you tried VP9 instead of VP8 (better efficiency)? lower qmax settings (to avoid codec breakup)?

Here's a brute-force I used on a similarly hard video, huehue
Code:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -qmin 0 -qmax 42 -crf 4 -b:v 10M -c:a libvorbis output.webm

Fun fact: WebM finally made me update from Firefox 18 to 28 and surprisingly only one addon I use was incompatible which I quickly could replace

Had not checked the size of my previous one, the miwa gif is just 500KB! Well, it's just a couple seconds, but damn, it's 1280x720 and has audio.

Made a few more off the C&C3 trailer, now I remember why I kept it, it's kinda fun

http://a.pomf.se/cnvwhe.webm

http://a.pomf.se/bdfrfk.webm

http://a.pomf.se/iudggd.webm

Could have made a better cut out of the first two, but eh, it's fine as it is. Each one is roughly 1.5MB, damn good for a 720p clip with audio

I'm using the extension but I can't get rid of autoplay. I want to do click to play but it just autoplays. This is stunning but I'm worried about my CPU.
Edit: Doh!!! Zoom was at 125%, I found the Save button. False alarm.

Does the Windows build has VP9, or do I have to build ffmpeg myself? Because last I check the Windows build does not support VP9.
