Nintendo fans: "We want a new IP"
*Code Name gets announced*
Nintendo fans: "It looks ugly! WHERE WAS MAJORA'S MASK HD?
*Game gets announced in January*
Nintendo fans: "Another remake? Nintendo needs new games"

... It is like an endless cycle!
I think most people just hate the visuals.

Find me one 3DS game that looks good in screenshots. It's impossible. How do some of you not know that by now? I'm sure this game will end up looking fine. IS knows what they're doing.

I'm still baffled at the lack of trailer.
I think they're intentionally slow rolling info to drum up attention.

Looking around gaf, I'd say their approach has paid off. If they had merely shown the trailer in the middle of the digital event then this would not have generation 1/100th the amount of posts.

Yeah...I feel like people heard the words HP Lovecraft and steampunk and strategy shooter and then imagined something gritty and dark, and then completely ignored the parts where they said it was based on Jack Kirby and Mike Mignola.

I think people heard the words "Valkyria Chronicles" and pictured something not quite so muddy and ugly.

Sure, sure, but IF they had bothered to go to Google and look up Jack Kirby, they would have had more of an idea where this was going, I think. I admit, although I already knew Jack Kirby and Mike Mignola, I did Google Valkyria Chronicles to see what it looked like. I was fooled into thinking it would resemble that graphical quality.

How was a 3DS game ever going to resemble the graphical quality of a PS3 game?

I think it's going to look fine in motion and people will eat crow after the footage.

But what about the art style?

They went from this:

To this:

Shin Megami Tensei IV and Resident Evil: Revelations both look great and manage to fool the player into thinking they're higher graphical quality than they are. Even so, I don't think the style is what matters here, but I think it will matter to sales.

The in game art style is pretty rough. I get what they were trying to do but it doesn't translate that well. This also happened with the xenoblade x faces so is not exclusive of trying to translate American Comics to 3d models.

Strategy games are niche anyways. It was never going to sell that well. The people into strategy games will get it if they want it, regardless of art style. Fire Emblem Awakening was an anomaly. I also don't let how well a game can sell or not affect my enjoyment of it.

I look at the box art, and the first thing I honestly think of is Viewtiful Joe. The worst thing about the screenshots so far is that the characters are hard to distinguish. They have what looks like cannons on the top of their suits behind their heads, but when translated to 3D models, in the low-res screenshots it looks like the cannons are their heads and they have weird robot heads, which isn't the case. It's just hard to make out. I'm guessing it'll look better on XL footage.

EDIT: ^ Oh my god. Great minds. Great minds.

Why isn't Lion on the cover? :(. I think the art looks quite a bit like MadWorld, the main characters are extremely similar too.

Both are heavily inspired by western comic books so that shouldn't really be a surprise. Odd how similar the main dudes are though.

Hmm. Can't say I'm a fan of the art style either. Though, I'll wait to see how it looks in motion before calling one way or another. Regardless, I will buy and play the crap out of this.

I'm aware, but evidently hearing "Valkyria Chronicles" and "cel-shaded" gave people expectations that weren't quite met.

Well is cel shaded and it truly seems is going to look better in motion... but I would have prefer an anime style or that they went full JackKirby or Darwyn Cooke style than the CN stuff in the cover.

Other than the main guy's weapon, which vaguely resembles the shape of a gun, I honestly can't tell what anyone else is holding. My eight-year old self who loved to draw stuff from Star Wars wouldn't know where to start with this.

Edit: This team looks like it leapt from the pages of an iHOP kid's menu.

I lol'ed.

They really do!

I can name at least 2:

Resident Evil Revelations

EX Troopers

Is this the big 3DS title announcement? I went to bed (EU here) and the only new thing I found today was this but does it sound that BIG?

sort of disappointed. was hoping for an art-style similar to the previous AW and FE games. will have to wait and see though. could be as zany as EBA :p.

cool concept, that is not what i envision when i hear american comic book art style but that in itself is a description with WIDE range of art styles

I look forward to seeing some gameplay videos

So, nothing streamed yet? Curious to see the game in action. I mean, sure, I was disappointed when I saw the art style, but if combat is good enough, I'll live (and be interested in the titlle)

I wonder why you didn't pick Pushmo or Paper Mario for this comparison.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Both have human characters? Both are of more similar genres than the games you mentioned?

The point of my post was to show the progression from an artstyle I love to one that, IMO, looks like horse shit.

I can't say i'm excited about this game. I think, like quite a bit of people, I didn't really ask for not wanted an new IP. What I love about Nintendo hardware, and the main reason why I buy them, is that it gets me the classic Nintendo games I've always liked.

Sure, sure, this might be great and we should never ever shun a new IP just because it's "different" or unexpected. I'm all behind that and props to them for going in the fray with something new...

...except there isn't a fray (let's not pretend for a second that they've got competition here), and there are some fan-loved IPs that have been too long gone. Advance wars, Metroid, F-Zero have all been cited in the pre-reveal thread for good reasons, along with Mother. I mean, it's great to have something brand new, but why can't we have both a brand new IP and a new game from a license fans are longing to get back into?

Nintendo's Wii U reveals were much better in that aspect. You get the squid game with a name I can't remember (ever), yay !, but you also get Yoshi's Wooly World, yay too! That's what I'd have liked to see for the 3DS this E3. I'm spoiled as fuck.

Said it in the other thread and I'm gonna say it again, in-game screens don't make this look any uglier than Borderlands, and people ate that shit up despite it being a game that offers nothing but being a shooter with loot that doesn't do either worth a damn.

I don't understand the reaction here at all, considering what they've described about the actual mechanics and systems already sounds 10 times better than the highly successful turd the art design is reminiscent of.

And new IPs are great, I never expected so many this E3, especially any from Nintendo of all places. They need to be backed into a corner more often, because this has been a strong show for them.

Art looks like it was done by somebody who wanted to copy Jack Kirby's art style but only knew how to draw in Bruce Timms style. Not a good look.

BTW, Majora's Mask's art style was inspired by Mike Mignola.

doesn't make the art any prettier. Expectations were high yesterday. only a natural reaction to the art, not the gameplay.

I think it's pretty cool of IntSys to go for a more western comic book art style with this new game. Can't wait to see the game played so that I can get a better understanding of the combat in this game.

Will there be a Treehouse event for this game?

It's perfectly reasonable to hate the art, I think it looks like wet butt too, but let's not pretend there aren't some folks in here completely unsold on the game for that reason alone. But yeah I suppose if it'd actually make you vomit to look at, what's the point of watching the gameplay. Maybe I'm misconstruing completely, but I know the other thread was moving like a train and then a screenshot was shown and everyone bailed, and this thread's not exactly trucking either.

Someone mentioned that this is why people should wait to see screenshots before getting hyped about anything, I feel the opposite that this is why descriptions of the game should come before screenshots. If people saw the screens first I bet only a fraction would have even read the description.

People could complain about anything.

It's a new Nintendo IP.

It's made by a developer with a phenomenal track record.

It's a unique premise and style.

This is EXACTLY what people have been begging for.

Yet there are so many complaints.

Yes

Need to see this in motion. The concept sounds amazing and I know Intelligent Systems will make a killer game. It's always been hard to figure out how a 3DS game will look based solely on screenshots. I saw comments online from people at the event saying it looked like no other 3DS game they had seen before. I am hoping that we will see some video of it on the Treehouse stream today.

It looks uh... Ok i guess.
I don't think it looks baad, it just kinda screems generic saturday morning cartoon show.

Kinda looks like somethig the dexter's lab dude, or Creig and Lauren would make. Art style wise.

Huh. Maybe it will grow on me.
