I'd make a point that you've got a bit of a biased audience having had a decent amount of experience with the series - but also coming from America I feel I can safely say that he's not as much of an icon as you're making him out to me. Nobody I know outside of my immediately family knows him or has any familiarity with the series. He'd probably be completely unknown to the public if not for some loose ties to Mike Tyson.

I've also never heard the Punch-Out theme at an NBA game.
I wouldn't say they're biased. Their life-to-date experience with Punch-Out might be an hour and a half, tops. Yet they remember Little Mac. They recognized who he is and what he's from and immediately found the concept of him in Smash to be appealing.

The whole Mega evolution push is just ridiculous.

One of the most popular Pokemon with one of the most popular Mega Evolutions being given an appearance to showcase the mechanic early in the game doesn't really seem like that big a deal.

It'll be an issue if Steven uses the Charizard in his E4 battle instead of something more fitting, but it's almost like being upset about Pikachu being in almost every game in the series.

Which is fine, because even if you don't have any experience with Punch-Out, a boxer in a fighting game makes sense and probably would be appealing. It doesn't make him an icon, though.

I've heard lapsed/non-gamers refer to "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!" on a few occasions. It's just one of those games that stuck with people who are now in their twenties and thirties. Little Mac's been near the top of American Smash Bros. request lists since Melee, and I'm elated that he's finally playable. I don't consider him an "A-lister," but his inclusion really helps legitimize the Smash Bros. roster. Why shouldn't Nintendo's most famous fighter be in a Nintendo fighting game?
Exactly

As in "Heathcliff"
Give me a second to figure this out

Brawl in 2008, Melee in 2001, Smash4 in 2014

So 6-7 years if they keep it up

HAHAHA, Fuck yeah I'm still in prime gaming age (actually will have entered it)

I'll enjoy playing Woder Red in this glorious new world where HEnry from Fire Emblem Awakening is playable
Isaac will be in, as will Shulk

Nintendo will have bought Capcom, Konami, Namco-Bandai, Square Enix, etc. and ALL of our favorite characters will be in

Sakurai will still be alive, we will all understand Iwata while we are in the middle of the next gen

Charizard will be crappy once more and stuck in NNU as I laugh in glee and praise Gamefreak.
And Red still won't appear in his Final Smash.

All of this in Smash5.

I hope that Smash 5 wouldn't get A LOT of characters cuts. I hope that you would remember my condolences if there are some cuts.

Edited: Here is my condolences that your perfect record got soiled by Batty. ;P

Yup. It's a way to make the old new again.

Next pokemon doesn't even need any newcomers, just more mega evolutions! (3 new starters, i guess!)

I hope that Smash 5 wouldn't get A LOT of characters cuts. I hope that you would remember my condolences if there are some cuts.

Yeah, they really can't keep adding characters unless they stop caring about balance. They can totally throw out any desire to make the game competitive if they add 5-10 newcomers each time and only cut a small handful. I'd say anything above 60 isn't manageable anymore.

I do wonder what the future of smash will be like. It's like mario kart, you have to have one for every new system. Will they start from scratch at one point? Cut everyone except for the main uncuttables (Mario Link Pikachu Kirby etc)? What else would they reinvent at that point? Would the gameplay change?

I don't think anyone ever insinuated Mac shouldn't be in Smash. We were talking about the characters' popularity and importance to Nintendo as a whole. In particular I brought up the fact that Smash Bros. has been running out of super popular/iconic characters to put into the roster since Brawl. Brawl has been rounding out the roster with the most glaring omissions (Wario, Dedede, Diddy, Pokemon Trainer and Olimar), and Smash 4 is doing the same with the series that had risen since then (particularly Villager), but for the most part it's characters that are either from B-list games or B-listers among the franchise they are from.

We're far from running out of Nintendo characters to put into Smash. That's the point I was making (and by proxy, Berordn as well, since it seems like he agrees with me).

It'll be a wait and see then. He could have used an Aggron to mega evolve since it makes more sense for the kind of pokemon he has though.

To be honest I'm pretty satisfied with the character selection in smash 4. There are a few I still want (Ridley, Mewtwo, unique moveset Ganondorf) but for the most part I'm pretty damn content. At this point I really don't have too many characters that would hype me up for Smash 5. Especially since we run the risk of losing Megaman, Sonic, and Pacman.

Puletena is really the only new comer that's a side character from a b-tier Nintendo series (if not c tier).

Wii Fit Trainer is odd, but her series is MASSIVE. Miis and Villager should have been in Brawl. Greninja is iffy, but he's hugely popular and the Pokemon roster is well rounded now between generations.

They really didn't like the 3DS version

Not really surprised, Smash is first and foremost a home console game after all that Sakurai is trying to fit into a handheld. Most of the issues they highlight are things that people suspected would be a problem before the 3DS version demoed and it seems like they were correct. Sure portable smash might be decent but that trade off sure doesn't seem like it at least now anyway.

Yup, very happy w/ it. Still want unique moveset ganondorf but after all the other veterans barely changing, I don't see it happening. The primary bastion of hope is sheik since her Side B was replaced for seemingly no reason! Other than that, everyone is like 90+% similar to how they used to be. Just give him 1-2 special changes and i'll call it a deal, sakurai.

Wii Fit Trainer and Miis aren't what I'd really consider characters. Wii Fit Trainer in particular is not a character anyone would consider an actual character. She's the virtual instructor in a fitness game. She's not popular (well, she is now that she's in Smash, but before that), she has no personality, and she is definitely not the reason people got Wii Fit.

Miis are avatars. They, too, have no actual personality, and they are supposed to be a depiction of yourself, or your family/friends, etc. The same goes for Villager, I guess, but the Villager is more of a character than the Mii by proxy of the Villager being part of the game's universe, rather than just an avatar a game uses to emulate yourself.

I am completely for the inclusion of Wii Fit Trainer and Miis (at least after seeing the Mii Fighter in action), but I wouldn't consider them "popular" or "iconic" characters, heh.

May I inquire pointers towards the information on that? I'd be interested in that, since Greninja's been growing on me, and if the history of his design is interesting, I'd like to learn more about it!

Sakurai talked about it at the round table. Someone linked to it on smashboards I think. I wish I rembered the link. But basically sakurai saw his design and created his moves later that night. Without knowing a thing about him.

If my kids are still interesting in video games and wanting Smash Bros 5. I can see myself buying new nintendo console with Smash 5 at heart beat. :p

Indeed.

My 5 year old is a nintendo addict so I will be forced to buy new ones lol

Maturity, bitches.
Retiring from gaming? It's a hobby. If you still enjoy keep with it. We're the new generation that can say it's OK to play game in your 50s and beyond. Actually there's someone on GAF who is in their 50s and proud of it.

A while ago I made a stage roster, and I thought I'd do it again. I wish I could have gotten better pictures for a lot of them, but it's more just representational.

First, 3DS version:

HbvONvi.png

From the 3DS demo I noted that, if the stage icons filled the screen, there could fit 16 slots. So I thought there could be two pages of new stages, making 32, and then one page of returning stages + the random button for 15 old ones.

Italics are those already confirmed:

Page 1
-Battlefield, Final Destination, 3D Land, Golden Plains
-Rainbow Road, Golden Temple, Gerudo Valley, Spirit Train
-B.S.L., Yoshi's New Island, Green Greens, Katina
-Prism Tower, Giant Chasm, White Land, Saturn Valley

Page 2
-Arena Ferox, WarioWare Inc., Tortimer Island, Reset Bomb Forest
-Rhythm Heaven Remix, Gaur Plains, Boxing Ring, Balloon Fight
-Living Room, Pushmo Park, Tomodachi Life, Find Mii
-Wuhu Island, Pac Maze, Guts Man, Tropical Resort

Page 3 (old stages)
-Planet Zebes, Dream Land, Saffron City, Jungle Japes
-Great Bay, Venom, Onett, Icicle Mountain
-Flat Zone, Luigi's Mansion, Mushroomy Kingdom, Yoshi's Island
-Port Town Aero Dive, Distant Planet, Pictochat, Random

And then the Wii U version:

AQyHch9.png

I did this one first. It was my original idea to have 36 new stages and 12 old for both versions, but revised the 3DS version down a bit after working out the space on the screen.

I think the old stages on the Wii U version have a different page, but I included them there for clarity. The random button on the Wii U version stage select screen is not included as it's not a normal slot like it is in the 3DS version.

Left to right, top to bottom:

New Stages
-Battlefield, Final Destination, Mario Galaxy, Mushroom Kingdom U, Bowser's Castle, Luigi Circuit
-Wonky Waterway, Skyloft, Dark World, Pyrosphere, Bryyo Cliffside, Yoshi's Island
-Lor Starcutter, Area 6, Pokemon League, PokeFloats II, Cosmo Terminal Trident, Magicant
-Coliseum, WarioWare Inc., Palutena's Temple, Garden of Hope, Town & City, Pilotwings
-Boxing Ring, Built to Scale, Gaur Plains, Wii Fit Studio, Nintendo Land Plaza
-Donkey Kong Jr., Excite Track, Icicle Mountain, Flat Zone 3
-Pac Land, Wily Castle, Windy Hill

Old Stages
-Hyrule Castle, Mushroom Kingdom, Yoshi's Story, Fourside, Halberd, Castle Siege
-Sector Z, Kongo Jungle, Mute City, Frigate Orpheon, Pokemon Stadium 2, Skyworld

---

Some notes:

-Yes, that is an image of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
-Under my roster the only two stages that the two versions flat out completely share are the Boxing Ring (which we already know for certain they share) and Gaur Plains. Battlefield and Final Destination we know are different looking in both versions, and the two WarioWare stages I have in both are intended to be similar in concept to Brawl's but both would have their own selection of microgames.
-The Wii U version is a bit more all inclusive in that every franchise has its own stage save for R.O.B.. Ice Climber, Game & Watch, and Pikmin are all only represented by past stages in my 3DS roster and there is no dedicated Wii Fit stage either.
-I'm kind of iffy on the only new Kirby stage in the 3DS version being a black and white gameboy retro stage (the name Green Greens is intended to be both an accurate in-game name and ironic to what it looks like), but I would think if any old gameboy game was represented like this it would be the original Kirby's Dreamland, which was Sakurai's first game he directed.

Oh that. I thought it was about the design of the Greninja Pokemon, rather than the Smash iteration, heh.

I'm saying they recognized him by name despite that limited experience, though. Many people remember the NES and SNES Punch-Outs, even if they weren't gamers then and aren't gamers now, and even if their experience with those titles was brief. It's just part of the pop culture landscape, not as strong as Mario iconography but certainly stronger than many other characters on the SSB roster.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree, because it's absolutely not the case among the people I talk to. Almost nobody I know with gaming as an active hobby is even aware of the NES and SNES Punch-Out titles, a lot of them having had their first experiences with video games in arcades. In a roster with Pac-Man, Mario and Pikachu, he's a virtual nobody.

Sooo....just to get a sense...

How do you guys feel about Snake?

I wanted (and want) Simon, not Snake. Snake misses the point of Smash Bros. He was there as a promotion of current products, not as a celebration of legacy, as Mega Man, Sonic, and Pac-Man are.

Snake makes more sense in a Playstation Battle Royale game than Smash Bros. Snake from Konami, Jin or Heihachi from Namco, a Resident Evil guy from Capcom, and, well, I don't really know what the hell Sega is anymore, but Sonic wouldn't be their rep.

Well of course he's not as recognizable as Mario, Pac-Man and Pikachu, but he's still freaking Little Mac. My friend who hasn't had a system since the Game Boy Color instantly recognized him. In fact, it was his wife who never played games at all who recognized him. Purely anecdotal, but I've seen this happen numerous times, before we even get into the appearances on primetime TV (Goldbergs), at major sporting events, in pop culture boutiques, etc.

Problem with me, my hands are very valuable to me because I need it for sign languages and writing to communicate with the people so I can't afford to risk the chance of getting severe arthritis or carpal tunnels because it would impact my life because I've seen it happening to few dead peeps.

Does anyone have the video of where the Rhythm Heaven enemy pops up?

Soo.. A little birdy told me you never lost a bet till I came along. This changes everything, you must now have an avatar by me. Bwahaha!

Went through stages of grief a long time ago. Actually asked several times in last thread

So what is it going to be
Btw, this avatar is still mine while I undergo what Batty has in store

Is there a video of the entire round table, with decent audio?
