The whole Mega evolution push is just ridiculous. Its a whole new level of promotion.
Pikachu can't mega evolve. Charizard is the second in line mascot for Pokemon. Of course they're going to use him...

I wouldn't say they're biased. Their life-to-date experience with Punch-Out might be an hour and a half, tops. Yet they remember Little Mac. They recognized who he is and what he's from and immediately found the concept of him in Smash to be appealing.I'd make a point that you've got a bit of a biased audience having had a decent amount of experience with the series - but also coming from America I feel I can safely say that he's not as much of an icon as you're making him out to me. Nobody I know outside of my immediately family knows him or has any familiarity with the series. He'd probably be completely unknown to the public if not for some loose ties to Mike Tyson.
I've also never heard the Punch-Out theme at an NBA game.

ExactlyI've heard lapsed/non-gamers refer to "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!" on a few occasions. It's just one of those games that stuck with people who are now in their twenties and thirties. Little Mac's been near the top of American Smash Bros. request lists since Melee, and I'm elated that he's finally playable. I don't consider him an "A-lister," but his inclusion really helps legitimize the Smash Bros. roster. Why shouldn't Nintendo's most famous fighter be in a Nintendo fighting game?
Greninja fighting Lucario to take that spot soon
Give me a second to figure this out
Brawl in 2008, Melee in 2001, Smash4 in 2014
So 6-7 years if they keep it up
HAHAHA, Fuck yeah I'm still in prime gaming age (actually will have entered it)
I'll enjoy playing Woder Red in this glorious new world where HEnry from Fire Emblem Awakening is playable
Isaac will be in, as will Shulk
Nintendo will have bought Capcom, Konami, Namco-Bandai, Square Enix, etc. and ALL of our favorite characters will be in
Sakurai will still be alive, we will all understand Iwata while we are in the middle of the next gen
Charizard will be crappy once more and stuck in NNU as I laugh in glee and praise Gamefreak.
And Red still won't appear in his Final Smash.
All of this in Smash5.

I hope that Smash 5 wouldn't get A LOT of characters cuts. I hope that you would remember my condolences if there are some cuts.

The Villager's franchise is bigger than Star Fox, Mother, or Fire Emblem could ever hope to be.
I'll be playing SSB5 with my son/daughter... :O
It'll be a wait and see then. He could have used an Aggron to mega evolve since it makes more sense for the kind of pokemon he has though. One of the most popular Pokemon with one of the most popular Mega Evolutions being given an appearance to showcase the mechanic early in the game doesn't really seem like that big a deal.
It'll be an issue if Steven uses the Charizard in his E4 battle instead of something more fitting, but it's almost like being upset about Pikachu being in almost every game in the series.
Which is fine, because even if you don't have any experience with Punch-Out, a boxer in a fighting game makes sense and probably would be appealing. It doesn't make him an icon, though.
After hearing a bit about the development behind Greninja in Smash (and in Pokemon for that matter), I like the character choice a lot more.
Yeah his backstory was very interesting and cool.
I'm already playing smash bros with my daughter and will with 2nd child next year lol

I don't think anyone ever insinuated Mac shouldn't be in Smash. We were talking about the characters' popularity and importance to Nintendo as a whole. In particular I brought up the fact that Smash Bros. has been running out of super popular/iconic characters to put into the roster since Brawl. Brawl has been rounding out the roster with the most glaring omissions (Wario, Dedede, Diddy, Pokemon Trainer and Olimar), and Smash 4 is doing the same with the series that had risen since then (particularly Villager), but for the most part it's characters that are either from B-list games or B-listers among the franchise they are from.
We're far from running out of Nintendo characters into Smash. That's the point I was making (and by proxy, Berordn as well, since it seems like he agrees with me).
Sooo....just to get a sense...
How do you guys feel about Snake?
Man
They really didn't like the 3DS version
To be honest I'm pretty satisfied with the character selection in smash 4. There are a few I still want (Ridley, Mewtwo, unique moveset Ganondorf) but for the most part I'm pretty damn content. At this point I really don't have too many characters that would hype me up for Smash 5. Especially since we run the risk of losing Megaman, Sonic, and Pacman.
Wii Fit Trainer is odd, but her series is MASSIVE. Miis and Villager should have been in Brawl. Greninja is iffy, but he's hugely popular and the Pokemon roster is well rounded now between generations.
May I inquire pointers towards the information on that? I'd be interested in that, since Greninja's been growing on me, and if the history of his design is interesting, I'd like to learn more about it!
If my kids are still interesting in video games and wanting Smash Bros 5. I can see myself buying new nintendo console with Smash 5 at heart beat.
Indeed.
Secret character.
I hope not everyone will be revealed before the 3DS version release.
But don't people like Charizard?

Sakurai talked about it at the round table. Someone linked to it on smashboards I think. I wish I rembered the link. But basically sakurai saw his design and created his moves later that night. Without knowing a thing about him.
Actually Charizard is a fighter. You'll find that it is Ridley who is a boss.Charizard is a boss and anyone who disagrees sucks.
He has to be the 2nd most popular after Pikachu.
I'm saying they recognized him by name despite that limited experience, though. Many people remember the NES and SNES Punch-Outs, even if they weren't gamers then and aren't gamers now, and even if their experience with those titles was brief. It's just part of the pop culture landscape, not as strong as Mario iconography but certainly stronger than many other characters on the SSB roster.is fine, because even if you don't have any experience with Punch-Out, a boxer in a fighting game makes sense and probably would be appealing. stages.
We're just going to have to agree to disagree, because it's absolutely not the case among the people I talk to. Almost nobody I know with gaming as an active hobby is even aware of the NES and SNES Punch-Out titles, a lot of them having had their first experiences with video games in arcades. In a roster with Pac-Man, Mario and Pikachu, he's a virtual nobody.
Wii Fit Trainer and Miis aren't what I'd really consider characters. Wii Fit Trainer in particular is not a character anyone would consider an actual character. She's the virtual instructor in a fitness game. She's not popular (well, she is now that she's in Smash, but before that), she has no personality, and she is definitely not the reason people got Wii Fit.
Miis are avatars. They, too, have no actual personality, and they are supposed to be a depiction of yourself, or your family/friends, etc. The same goes for Villager, I guess, but the Villager is more of a character than the Mii by proxy of the Villager being part of the game's universe, rather than just an avatar a game uses to emulate yourself.
I am completely for the inclusion of Wii Fit Trainer and Miis (at least after seeing the Mii Fighter in action), but I wouldn't consider them "popular" or "iconic" characters, heh.
Well of course he's not as recognizable as Mario, Pac-Man and Pikachu, but he's still freaking Little Mac. My friend who hasn't had a system since the Game Boy Color instantly recognized him. In fact, it was his wife who never played games at all who recognized him. Purely anecdotal, but I've seen this happen numerous times, before we even get into the appearances on primetime TV (Goldbergs), at major sporting events, in pop culture boutiques, etc. We're just going to have to agree to disagree, because it's absolutely not the case among the people I talk to. Retiring from gaming? It's a hobby. If you still enjoy keep with it. We're the new generation that can say it's OK to play game in your 50s and beyond. Actually there's someone on GAF who is in their 50s and proud of it.
Does anyone have the video of where the Rhythm Heaven enemy pops up?
Soo.. A little birdy told me you never lost a bet till I came along. This changes everything, you must now have an avatar by me. Bwahaha!

Infernape > Charizard
lolInfernape > Charizard
In contrast that nobody like Lightning.
And some said Rosalina was Nintendo's Lightning but she is kinda popular.
