Different launchers. Your choice to include/disregard information is on the basis of a technicality (a trivial point of detail).

The launchers have absolutely nothing to do with the game, it's simply a script to execute the code through the JRE. There are different launchers for Mac and PC, because the method of telling the JRE to execute code is different depending on the syntax of the operating system.

Additionally, one does not even need to use the launchers to run the game.

That's a difference with each machine's version of Java, not the game. The game itself is identical. This is as explicitly as code can be cross platform as possible, this isn't a technicality or a "gotcha" like you're implying. This is how cross-platform code works.

EDIT: Further, if we're talking technicalities, claiming these are two different versions of the game because their launchers are different is much more of a technicality than claiming they're the same code. This is how virtual machines work. Are you familiar with the concept of an emulator? If I take a Sega Genesis cartridge, dump it, and run it on a PC through an emulator, is that a different version of the game than the one running on my actual Sega Genesis? This is an identical concept.

It's over, period. PC lost its last ace, and that's the end of their Minecraft hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for PC. PC has nothing left, nothing they can do would fix the hole now created by Minecraft. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a PC. Except if they want to play Excel spread sheets. Which will also come to console at some point.

The age of PC is done.

rayge used to do this all the time. It doesn't really do anything except point out which new users aren't familiar with the his PC preference or which users have a broken sarcasm detector.

edit: on topic, amazing numbers and it seems to be well deserved.

Yet, the launcher is included. I understand the reasoning why they're different, and why they exist. However, two different launchers exist for two distinct operating systems, for the same game. Your choice to disregard the launcher does not change the fact that both games are not entirely the same.

To help enlighten people about the popularity of Minecraft, Minecraft is the third-best selling video game of all time. Literally, only Tetris and Wii Sports have outsold it. Super Mario Bros. is fourth.

Not surprising. I'd find it hard to believe that there is a kid under the age of 12 that owns a 360/PS3 and does not own Minecraft.

All of those other games were pack in titles with extremely popular systems, so as far as I'm concerned that makes Minecraft even more impressive.

I'm stupefied as well. Why kids could ever like this or Legos is beyond me. Maybe kids are stupid.

I don't know if that's a smart remark, but Minecraft from my understanding is a lot deeper and more involved than Legos.

My buddy woke up in the middle of the night hearing some person's voice in the house. Here he finds his son watching Minecraft instructional videos on YouTube. I think Minecraft is having a bigger effect on some kids than any game of the past.

Windows/mac/Linux is still a PC. Who cares what operating system person uses? It is still one box.

But lumping several boxes against one and claiming consoles sell better is amusing.

How come? The PC is a much more widespread system among the general public than consoles, and cover a wide variety of SKUs/specs. Its not several boxes against one, its several vs several...

So how do the majority of people play Minecraft anyways? Just build a fort and fend off creepers?

I mean I have seen the crazy builds like LoTR Mines of Moria and the USS Enterprise, but the youth which is driving the sales aren't doing that.

So what is it?

It's like Lego. Kids do the same stuff they did with Lego, they build stuff.

The imagination is the limit.

Multiplayer modes I would guess. Huge active communities in PVP, co-op buidling, and so so many different game modes/type constantly being made

I was wondering why Nintendo didn't campaign for this on Wii U and 3DS, but I googled it and Nintendo is trying to make it happen. Hmm, kind of curious what numbers it pulls on Wii U...

you don't buy a PC version or Mac version or Linux version of the game, you buy a PC/Mac/Linux version, same price. here https://minecraft.net/store, see how each console have their own link but PC/Mac/Linux is the same?

PC/Mac/Linux have the same community, same servers, how are they not one platform? each console is one platform because they are separate and have their own communities.

Well to be a bit fair, many of the games just below Super Mario Bros. in regards to all-time sales are relatively modern, mostly the big games of the Wii and DS as well as various games from the GTA, CoD, The Sims, Mario, and Pokemon series, as well as random other single games.

Creativity and/or addiction, breh.

That's a crazy, crazy number. I still haven't played it. Should I play on PC, or wait for PS4? Please answer quickly, I want to be # 55,000,000.

PC is one SKU no matter its specs. X360 is another one SKU. PS3 is another. Etc.

The game still peaked at Beta 1.7. 1.8 changed the feel of everything. Haven't played it in a while though.

I think you need to look up what a SKU is because the idea that the "personal computer" is a single stock-keeping unit couldn't be farther from the truth.

This is probably what every developer wants.

Millions in sales + a HUGE modding community = amazingness

Let the community do all the work, release a small patch every now and then and sit back and relax.

So good. I'm jelly.

It's only available on two consoles at the moment. PC has far more users and is available in far more markets.

I build ridiculous shit with no real purpose. My current build is an underground forest. This required me to flatten a mountain range, then dig all the way down to the 0 block. Then I planted a lovely forest one block above the adminium. Then I rebuilt the ground above it, including putting the mountain back in place.

I'm also working on an enormous underwater aquarium, where you stand inside a glass shell and have a lovely view of the ocean. There isn't much light down there, so I've been dropping a bunch of light-emitting blocks on the ocean floorboard purely for the visual spectacle.

My wife, on the other hand, she just likes to flatten the world. She starts with a random build and begins making everything flat. My nephew builds various playsets and then invites his friends onto his server to play. So far he's done a big science fiction base with rockets and an enormous pirate battle.

I don't actually know that many people who spend their time in survival mode, although that's a perfectly fine way to play if you enjoy it.

Pretty much this, I think. I don't play with Legos any more, but there's no denying their educational value and potential interest to people with lots of creativity and imagination.

Basically when I sit down to play a game I don't want to be given a blank slate and be told to go nuts, I need something to go on, some kind of objective. Minecraft does not have this, plus it looks like absolute shit.

should put Minecraft on Steam. would sell a ton more.

Actually in this case I don't think that would happen. Usually I'd agree, but it was already a runaway success on PC before it was launched on every other format possible. They'd sell some through Steam, sure, but not a "ton" more.

Staggering amount of salt on the first page.

I've never really got into minecraft, I guess I've just never been the creative type, I found the demo to be interesting but nothing special.

The coolest stuff in minecraft, IMO, are the giant mechanical computers people will build. I saw a 3D printer in minecraft that blew me away. Hell, I've seen Pac-Man recreated in minecraft.

It's not entirely difficult to do if you understand the principal behind building physical logic gates, but damn those must be tedious to build.

Notch is the new Pajitnov. But at least Pajitnov made some interesting puzzle games following Tetris. This new guy can't even get off his ass to make an Elite-like.

Play on PC for sure. The PS4 version is still gimped compared to the PC version in terms of world size, mods, texture packs, etc.

Well he pretty much has publicly conceded that Minecraft was lightning in a bottle, and he'll likely never make another game even remotely as successful. I admire his honesty.

EDIT: Also, doing anything in the vein of any of the Elite games is incredibly difficult. Those games are still talked about today because they were massive accomplishments.

I'm realizing that no matter how hard I try, I will never understand why people find this fun.

It's a input limited creation set, with additional tedium applied to gathering your creation tools.

Maybe it's because I've actually built things in real life and created digital spaces in Photoshop/Maya/Unity/etc? Is it because it's the ultimate ease of use creator?

I honestly don't understand it.

You only need to gather materials on survivor mode. Creator mode has unlimited materials.

How do you feel about playing with legos at your age? Was there ever a time in your life where you could possibly have enjoyed playing with legos outside of the instructions?

These days my son is into multiplayer games on servers. You can play all kinds of stuff. Hunger games was popular for a while, and now he is playing a super smash bros style game where you disguise yourself as mobs and fight each other.

There are servers with hundreds of players where you claim plots of land for building and they have self contained economies so you can set up shops etc.

It is surprisingly flexible

I didn't think people actually did this. Even if I myself do it for aesthetic purposes sometimes.

I usually play survival mode. I build fortifications, a home, storage, pens, gardens, basically a nice little place to live. Then when I've gotten bored, I head in any direction and start over. Every few biomes I trek back through my villages and just kind of dawdle around on the first one for a bit.
