Destiny makes $500 million in first 24 hours

Well being the most pre ordered ip in history would probably mean that they shipped copies they think they could sell. Shipping $500m of any current Mario game probably wouldnt be as smart

Why name drop Mario? What does Mario have to do with this?

EA going exclusive with MS on Titanfall was a bad move for both parties involved, firstly the xbone trailing far behind PS4 in sales and EA being behind Activision once again with their shooter wars, the previous being COD/BF.

EA has shown they can recover from being behind, but they never overtook COD and BF sold great out of the gate.

MS was too greedy with Titanfall exclusively while Sony merely cosigned Destiny with exclusive DLC and Sony ended up being the winner. Especially now that Titanfall will come out for PS4 too, expect a quick port or the sequel to arrive on playstation.

Its gonna be another easy gen for Activision, its scary how much valued IP's they have, despite killing off once multimillion selling franchises.

You really don't know how the big Mario games sell?

Easy there. It's barely been 24 hours. It's going to be pretty close to record breaking, if not record breaking, I'm sure. They'll get around to it probably by tomorrow evening, I'm sure. (Also, I don't think Mr. Kotick is trembling in his boardroom right now.)

Also, Activision can't just "flood the market/shops." The market/shops have a say in what goes on their shelves and in their stock rooms...

Yes there's a thing called orders... Do people think Activision phones Walmart and states " we are sending you 1 million copies now put them in your stockroom ". Shelf space and stock space is calculated to the inch in retailers, you get X inches of display, etc... Shippers don't demand anything from huge retailers

Also this shipped vs. sold issue isn't a consideration unless there is a question whether it will sell. If stock sits on a shelf for a month that's a big problem, if you ship and sell that's money in the bank.

Good for Bungie at least. I've been reading some less than stellar impressions on here for it thought so I will have to wait and see some more myself

So they shipped a bunch of copies to retailers?

Seriously. It's almost like nobody in this thread has ever seen a game in a clearance bin before.

When we get actual real sales figures, as in numbers of people who bought the game, then that's a point for discussion.

but console gaming is dead right?

lol ahahaha

Can you believe a massive company that sunk $500 million into the development of a game shipped $500 million worth of copies of it?

lolololololololololol!!!!! ahahahahahahalaololololololololololllll!!!!!1

Can you believe people still use a figure for development and marketing that has been debunked numerous times by Bungie and Activision? [laughter]

Just the be clear. That's sarcasm right? Because there seem to be plenty of crazies that actually do believe that crap.

There were people who genuinely believed a lot of people were excited for Titanfall too. It goes both ways, crazies who believe in artificial hype and crazies who believe genuine hype is all astroturfing.

Fuck me. How many PS4's did this sell?

Unbelievable. And nobody even knows if it will review well or not... Although thats moot at this point.

This is exactly what they want. I bet they knew that this game might be great but might also review badly.

No need to kill momentum.

Except, once again, you actually know nothing at all about how Destiny's launch is going.

Kotick's message told you absolutely nothing whatsoever about how well or not the product is selling. While I would be surprised if it's not indeed doing well, the metainformation from this release is that Kotick consciously chose a metric that gives no substantive information yet is phrased to mislead the uninformed masses into interpreting it as a positive.

We know it's indisputably doing well. It had 1 million pre-orders alone, and that's not counting the droves who are going to go into stores and pick it up on day one.

There has never been a game I can think of that had 1 million pre-orders and didn't do spectacularly well. I mean the game did 500 million sales to retailers because retailer saw the demand and ordered that sort of weight. It seems you're on a crusade that has no real reason to exist: we know it did well. You just don't appreciate that he didn't choose a different way to show how well it did in this specific press release. Go get 'em, I guess?

Neither. It's the value of all the games on the way to shelves in stores, and people other than Activision are going to get a cut of that when each unit is sold to a consumer.

What are you talking about? It's Activision's revenue.

Holy hell. The hype is real. I sold maybe 200 copies yesterday including the midnight and people were super excited about the game. Was not expecting them to make the money back ao quickly.

I still haven't opened mine. I thought I cancelled my pre-order from Amazon but it arrived yesterday and I'm too scared to open since I didn't like the alpha/beta's MP mode. :S

Never, because even CoD doesn't have yearly installments from the same developer.

That said, one of Activision's potential roadmaps for the franchise was to have four games over eight years, with each game getting a large expansion pack about a year after release.
Even though the developer may not be the same, the fact is, CoD has yearly installments.

As for Destiny, who owns the IP? Bungie or Activision? And could Activision change their 4 games over 8 years contract/plan and have other developers work on Destiny titles?

My speculation based on TF/Destiny sales.

Mario games don't have same day worldwide launch. Nintendo doesn't release day one figures either.

If any Mario game sold 500m in even the first week, do you think nintendo would be quiet about it?

And I did say recent Mario game, with the sales of the Wii u, there isnt going to be a Mario game that has the same success as Destiny for quite a while.

There's nothing about the phrase "the company sold more than $500 million of Destiny" that would lead me to believe that the $500 million is revenue for Activision. Unless you're aware of something beyond that statement, in which case please do share, that phrase looks to say, as far as I'm reading it, that the $500 million refers to the value of the games in terms of what the consumers will pay, which may equate to income for the retailers, but certainly not Activision.

There were 210 titles released on discs for Console and Handheld platforms in the 12 months ending May 2014.

13 of those 210 were first person shooters. That's 6%.

On Sony and Microsoft consoles, 12 first person shooters released out of 138 total releases. That's 9%.

You're spouting nonsense.

Burn.

I don't get the hype about this game.

It's just Mass Effect + Halo? These games never made 500 million in 1 day?

This is correct. Think of it this way, Activision likely takes down 50% of the $60 for a game and the rest is split amongst the retail markup, console manufacturer and the printer.

If Activision is really booking $500M of revenue then this infers they put 17M copies of the game on the shelves ($500M * 2)/$60. If the $500M represents the aggregate value of the copies of Destiny sold to retailers then take ($500M/$60) or 8M copies. Which makes more sense?

Bungie owns the Destiny IP. Contract is contract. Activision can't change anything if Bungie doesn't like it.

I thought Titanfall was the best selling XB1 title...

So they shipped a bunch of copies to retailers?

Yeah, I saw a floor display of Destiny games sitting near the checkout at Target today. My thought was that someone doesn't realize that this game is going to be largely digital.

The game is going to do well, has a long tail, and many have already bought the $30 in expansion packs.

But I suspect we are going to see cheap physical copies everywhere soon. For what its worth, I pre-ordered Destiny at Gamestop, but never went to pick it up. I bought it online instead.

Despite MS, EA, and Respawn (and Respawn employees on GAF) all saying they were happy with the game's sales, despite a sequel being greenlit, and despite it being the best selling title on Xbox One, there is a sizeable community who still believed the game 'flopped' according to their personal standards.

Now that we have your money, here's the reviews!

lol. And that number is insane. They really have managed to reach into the pockets of literally every gamer, I mean those who aren`t dyed-in-the-wool hardcore gamerz. I think the GTA V sales numbers will be busted...

From Browsing GAF it seems like many people dont realize that the "hardcore gaming audience" is a pretty small part of sales and while the opinion of the hardcore gamer matters a bit, it really doesnt matter much in the big picture. People apparently liked titanfall, or at least enough to have a sequel made.

Wont happen, do you mean lifetime sales? I don't see destiny getting near 20m lifetime. Maybe 10-12. Imo :p

Will be interesting to see sales per platform.

It will.

I firmly believe that people are heavily ignoring the "home bias" of Destiny towards Xbox platforms. The content and marketing surely brought the two platform's numbers closer than it would have otherwise, but I believe people expecting a 2:1 sales ratio like with Watch Dogs will be very, VERY surprised.

I expect something of the sort for (software only) sales:

Xbox One/PS4: Nearly a 50/50 split
Xbox One + 360 > PS4 + PS3

A singe Mario game has done $500m in one day?

Destiny didn't do $500 million in a single day. This is retailers anticpating sell through. The question is will a Mario game do $500 million eventually and the answer is chances are good. Most of these copies are going to sit in warehouses for a long time.

You must be talking about when Nintendo goes multi-platform with its games because it failed out of the console market.
