I don't understand where they are getting the competitor's sales numbers from. Can someone explain to me, how MS has access to Sony's and Nintendo's shipment and retail sales numbers?

It's probably an inside financial joke. There has to be some sort of gimmick or none of it would make a bit of sense.

I assume it's not from NPD as I don't believe they would give out any numbers until their monthly reports come out. Therefore I would have to assume MS can go right to the source and ask Walmart, Gamestop, Target etc. for sales estimates of all the consoles, or perhaps just whether or not they are selling the best.

They don't, but you can generally do a large enough sampling study to get an estimate that wouldn't embarrasses yourself.

Eg. run a two week survey of X number of outlets, survey sell-out of said consoles in a certain time-frame, run it across internal data of your own sales = educated guess that your console sold more than the other.

Alternatively, they could do a large enough estimate of whether or not PS4/WiiU has had any major shifts in their overall shipment quantities in the past 2 weeks ( based off their retail partners + retail reports ), and just ship a large enough quantity that a variance of +/-20% would still put their shipment in the lead, etc.

Companies have ways to make educated guesses of how well they're doing compared to the competition. Maybe not the actual sales figures, but stuff like percentages, sales ratio, etc, aren't too difficult or expensive.

I'm mainly a PC guy but it's getting really tempting for me to buy one with all these $329-$350 bundles going around. Very smart move on MS' part.
Consoles are long term purchases and XB1 keep giving deals desperately and they will in future too. If you like what exclusives there in XB1 then buy it but not for the price deal which you can get in future too. Also first half of 2015 has nothing for XB1 exclusives so your system is collecting dust. PS4 has many exclusives all year next and it might not have must exclusive now but has some good games with diversity and you can't get deals more from PS4 like XB1 after holidays so it's best buy it now if you're interested.

10 millions PS4 sold through in August, 10 millions Xbox One shipped in november...

I wonder how is gap now

Technically, Xbox One has not shipped 10 millions yet, as Yusuf did said 'shortly'. We don't know if that shortly will be the next day, week, month, or even quarter...

anyway, so... while we're here.

Where DOES GAF think the Xbox One will settle at the end of the year sold-through to consumers? What number are we looking for on December 31?

I'm guessing it ends up somewhere just north of 9million by the end December but only time will tell for sure.

Hopefully MS will announce when they do reach 10m point so I can add a new solid point for X1.

I agree it will be around 9-9.5 in best case. NA sales will be great for them but Europe sales are not going to pick up for their exclusive or prices.

Yep pretty much. America + UK can only do so much. Especially when they're getting outsold 9+ months in a row in those same territories.

Yes I'm serious. Not every company sends executives here to blatantly lie about specs. And there is a difference between PR that puts a nice face on things and PR that is intentionally deceitful. MS has proven time and time again how little respect they have for me as a customer and the inevitable result is my own disrespect for them as a business.

Jesus Christ. Did Microsoft kill your dog or something?

Good to see I can enjoy my Xbox one for many more years.

I don't care either way, as I have an Xbox one, PS4 and a WiiU.

But my primary console is the Xbox One.

Good to see Sony and MS are doing well.

The price drop and MCC could put the XB1 ahead of PS2 pace again. It seems insane that at both the XB1 and the PS4 have been out pacing the PS2 for most of the this generation. This is still only the first year though. I wonder if either console will have the legs of the PS2. Will smartphones, tablets, and Steam put a plateau on the numbers these consoles can reach?

Well deserved. Xbox One (software wise) has become at much better console than the Playstation 4. The games are also good.

PS2 was released in NA quite a while after it was released in Japan IIRC, so the first year or more had a vastly smaller market.

Or am I remembering that wrong?

Deserved? I think it's more about $350 vs $400...at the end of the day, it's a dollars game. It took a $280 pric tag for me to get one.

Is it me or does this feel like damage control getting out infront of the npds as they will be beaten again?.
Pretty much. They try being the first with positive PR. MS knows they will be crushed in sales after 2014 is over. Sony should easily sell 17-18 million systems and shipped around 20.

What large company is completely ethical and respectful?
This question doesn't even make sense - you realize that, right?

'Ethical and respectful' isn't a clearly defined term. Furthermore, the basis on which capitalism is founded is inherently exploitative and unethical by definitions that most people would use in the context of interpersonal relationships.

We accept it mostly because it's expedient, less ruthlessly caste-bound than what has come before (monarchy, feudalism, and slavery), and delivers novelty.

So it is 10 millions...but not really 10 millions, because almost and such...sold in, but not sold through...

My head hurts from the spinning. They must have crashed during October.

I'm guessing it's better than august but worse than september. The $349 announcement probably killed off sales in that last week.

We can only estimate, but pretty close how much xbone sold to costumers globally. Should be around 6 million. From this PR I guess they already stuffed all their Q4 shippments into retail channels and try to make it sound positive, that "10 millions xbones are out there". October sales of PS4 were pretty good becuase of the Destiny bundle and limited white edition still selling. I think that global sales are more than 2:1 (around 13 million to around 6 million) right now. The gap will increase considerably after December. Sony might ship more than 5 million systems in the next weeks, so we might see the magical 20 million shipped sometime in January 15.

the graph is false. According to: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=922489

Sony is at 13.5 million PS4 shipped total, not sold, in October.

The graph looks more like 12.5MM not 13.5MM.

The PS2 was out in Japan 5 months earlier in Japan. The PS2 also sold almost one million units the first day in Japan. I wonder if the PS4 or the XB1 have broken one million units yet in Japan.
