Yeah people who have been in the know look to be saying it is indeed Andy Serkis.

Makes sense, seeing how he is actually in the movie and Cumberbatch isn't.

I think you are very much in the minority.

I think the trailer looks great. I've been waiting for a decent Star Wars movie for a long long time.
ROTS was solid. Also, is this the biggest selling point? Is the notion that Star Wars is "coming back" the biggest draw? I don't get it,Star Wars has been more present in the last ten years than ever before; ROTS was 2005 and the EU constantly propelled it to the front of everyone's mindset. We aren't running on a shortage of SW, why sell that mindset when it's untrue.

Hell, my exact thought was "it looks like Star Trek."
Yup, I'm surprised everyone here is loving it, but good for you guys I suppose.
Exactly.

Okay, I went into this thread expecting to be a bitter hater but the cut to the Falcon and the music got me smiling like a fool. Damn it.

this is the real worst part of the trailer

for some reason the title reveal looked awful
Title looks awful. Why isn't it the classic "Star The Force Awakens Wars" rectangle?

Also willing to bet that shot of the stormtroopers? Is part of the opening. The short one is probably Boyega.

And that shot we see of Boyega popping up into frame? When we pan around, I bet there's a lot more debris and garbage and broken/burning stuff littered in the desert. The kind of stuff you don't really have time to composite in for a quick teaser a year out.

Thank you. Fuck. It's like.. this is where we draw the line?

Breaking well established aesthetic conventions for the sake of novelty is a potentially bad omen. I can see why it troubles people, it troubles me to be honest. I'll be willing to swallow it if it works within the context of the movie, but the cynic in me definitely sees it as a ploy to get people talking and sell toys.

I'm telling you it's an overcharged saber... capable of cutting through other saber "blades". The hilt stuff is just exhaust.

This is exactly the kind of story / reason-based justification that could work for me.

Solid teaser. Didn't ignite any hope or huge explosive excitement, but it looks promising.

Was a sick light saber too. I'm glad they're breaking the mold. It's something this series has needed for a long time. Old ways are old, bring some real life to these movies.

That's exactly what makes it great. None of that static Lucas camera work.

They built life size Falcon and X-Wing props. Have you seen the couple behind the scenes vids they released? All of that was practical props, no CGI(iirc). And Abrams already came out and said he was gonna limit the CGI use.

that clip is 100% CGI

Am i the only person who feels disheartened by this clip

i do not like the camera work, It doesn't feel like star wars to me and its making me worried we're in for another CGI festival

This movie will have CG that why it feels different. Every scene with humans feels straight outa the OG.

It's also a bit of a parody of the traditional opening panning shot for every starwars movies.

yeah. And I know im overthinking it but I like the focus on character (starting with that shot) cause it gives me that sense of a smaller more focused scope which is really all I fucking want out of this

You said 1% "of star wars fans" "even know the books exist"

Now you've changed that to 1% "of people that have seen Star Wars movies" "Have read the books"

Talk about goalpost moving.
I'd stand by that statement regardless...but what's the point of the argument if people just know that books exist and haven't read them?

Think about the number of people that have seen those movies. Your parents have seen it. Kids have seen it. Grand parents have seen it.

I've watched them all a thousand times and I'd never consider reading the books...and if I had I wouldn't hold the movies to that canon.

You forget how little of the population the active internet base makes up.
I'm saying Star Wars thrives off the big screen. KotOR didn't just have marginal success...
Sure, but that's a video game...a vastly more accessible and consumed medium.

I don't associate that type of camera work with star wars. Its come straight of a computer. I find it disheartening as there was a lot of talk of being faithful and using models as much as possible
Calm down, scooter. You saw maybe 30 seconds worth of footage from a film more than 2 hours long.

Anoregon

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
WHEN THE MUSIC KICKS IN AND THE MILLENNIUM FALCON

FUCK

Just watched it.

The look is different for sure, but it already feels better than I, II, or III. Holy shit.

Got teary eyed at the end. We might actually get a decent Star Wars movie.

They haven't said what he is at all. Everyone just assumes Serkis is a CGI character. I'd love it if he wasn't, the dude is too good for people to not be able to recognize him.

That would be great, and it would fit in line with using more practical effects and puppets instead of relying on CGI

The only instance of racism I can recall in SW was when one of the imperial officers referred to Chewbaccca as a "thing".

There's some "racism" against droids too (at least at the Mos Eisely Cantina), probably because of the clone wars

Yeah it is more like .0005% Star Wars has millions upon millions of fans. The EU? A couple thousand, at best.

you're both right or both wrong.

What classifies a "star wars fan"

Star Wars is a huge franchise. There's kids who love the prequels but couldn't care less about the original trilogy.
There's people who watched Star Wars, and who will watch Episode 7, but wouldn't list it under their favourite films of all time.

SOME would even argue that a "true Star Wars fan" is something who has AT LEAST consumed a few pieces of the extended universe, even if it's just playing Shadows of the Empire on the N64 ;)

Btw on the Tatooine shots, is it me or when the Falcon flips over there seems to be only 1 sun??? Can't clearly see it because of the clouds but there is only 1 light sources indicating maybe they forgot to add the 2nd sun lol...

omg..you are right. It really is quite spielberg..because in Raiders of the Lost Ark, wasn't there a scene who was quite similar? You see something, still shot and suddenly the head of indiana pops up?
Yeah and in tintin too I think (which was an homage to Indiana)

Uh...Star Wars is all about blockbusters and having a good time at the theater. It's a pop culture phenom. We should get that with this film hopefully

I don't get why people think the lightsaber looks dumb, it actually looks more practical, I mean, seriously, how the hell do jedi/sith not lose fingers all the time from their opponents just sliding the blade down during a clash. I don't get it. Actual swords have cross-guards (or more practically, basket guards) for a reason, guys.

Still skeptical about JJ Abrams directing this, but this seems like a decent start.

Serious question as I haven't followed this as much as others. Is the majority of the old cast in the film or is that just a rumor I may have made up in my mind?. Like, everyone except Lando.

Edit - Stupid ass question top of page fuck my life.

The X-wing scene, so damn good.

I didn't care too much for the rest of the trailer. It could go OT or Prequel, who knows.
