Next-gen consoles have reached CGI rendering in real time ?

It looks just as good as in the reveal trailer, just at half the framerate.

Were we watching the same footage?

Some games have the CG look, like The Order. But if we are talking spec for spec, no. Don't think that matters though as long as it has a similar look.

Also, CGI has the advantage of having a controlled environment.

Yes, and ps2 is a nurbs console. We are not there, we can still spot polygons easily, iq is way worse and games are still not flawless in presentation.
Though game devs are able to mimic complex algorithms for, let's say, water or clothes physics, while of course are not there. And they can't - server farms are spending hours to render frames, games have a few milli seconds.

Having now played The Order 1886, I must say, yes ! I didnt know the PS4 would actually do this (let alone in its early life), the AA in The Order is pretty amazing, you really need to look closely to find a single jaggie, the animations are spot on, lighting is also incredible...I mean, we're there.

The order is the first game ever that totally match (almost) nowadays cg imho.

The game is almost perfect. its not only the absence of aliasing, the perfect textures, the crazy lightning, the insane modelling. Its all of this together

when i first booted the game, and i saw the main protagonist looking through something, the way the light is reflecting on him , as the perfect "not videogame looking" shadowing as well.... i was like it cant be real time

big props , really

looking at Gears of war , and THe order, its finally feels like a whole gen appart.

It looks good, but no game engine will match any CGI's perfect image quality and infinite draw distances. At least for the time being. So no its not very close yet.

The CGI in those movies does not hold up today...the only advantage they have is in terms of aliasing and lighting

Not quite 10 years ago, but keep in mind something like Davy Jones was 9 years ago.

wat

You can still tell it's CG. The best CG today, a lot of people can't even tell if it's a digital effect.

My brain has always been more impressed by awesome real-time graphics than it has by awesome CG.

Two very different beasts.

I don't know, probably.

Time of day and lighting conditions are different, but everything seems as detailed as it was on the reveal trailer. Doesn't seem to be any downgrade on geometry, texture quality or anything except the framerate.

I'm watching this and I'm pretty amazed at how far we've come, i remember how incredible that Onimusha 3 opening was at the time and now... well I honestly feel like The Order can stand next to this, the things that this CGi do better is animation and scale when we view the outdoor scene with the huge monster and all the NPCs, maybe some of the more complex models look better, but damn when we compare the main protagonist and the regular enemy models, the indoor environments the lighting and even the IQ- it's really comparable and shall i say it? The Order looks better in some ways.

Amazing achievement by RAD.

I believe so

and yes U4 looks CGI to me

I don't see it at all a lot of the time in any of the next gen console games. U4 is the only one that gets close, but only during the "cutscenes", which to me feels a lot like playing through the last of us, where those scenes look far better than the actual gameplay. The gameplay itself looks like any other game to me

Agreed. Luckily, Ray Tracing is starting to enter the video game pipeline.

Real time screenshot from The Tommorow Children.

nononono dude, that's not from the TC.

I rendered a sample from Octane Render to compare to the tomorrow children.

sorry about that

Edit: you even quoted me 1 pg later ITT...whoops....

OT: OP, nothing photorealistic released up until now (The Order, Agni, UC4, Dark Sorcerer) has yet to beat even The Spirits Within, and that's almost 14 years old.

Maybe next gen.

Ryse maybe, but definitely Star Citizen. But considering SC is PC only, there's really no surprise.

Ryse doesn't I think. U4 is lacking post processing effects at the moment though, so looks a bit more vanilla, but I don't see how people can't be impressed by the visuals. IQ was great, lighting was very natural and not overdone, textures were excellent and animations were very good. The level design seems to prioritize gameplay over realism somewhat, but they were pretty expanisve and the views across the landscape look really good. I don't expect characters in SC to look as good as those in U4. A comparison between SC and U4 is non-sensical though, considering the types of games.

Wow, pretty massive difference between the Ryse render and the actual game (which still looks good obviously)

Characters in SC will use enhanced TressFX technology for all characters hair, so this automatically means that hair will be much higher quality than in U4.
And in terms of general modeling and rig fidelity, they are aiming higher than Ryse.

And why its non-sensical?

SC will use Imaginarium for their motion capture. Imaginarium did the motion capture for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and for the upcoming Star Wars, and Avengers films. So you can guarantee that the animation quality will be of a higher standard than that of U4's.

As for this, I don't see how you could come to such a conclusion.
