Yeah, that video sure is keeping it from reaching it's goal.

Obviously not, but right now people are pledging on trust and legacy alone, and even some of those fans are held back by that video.
Show something even non-Shenmue people would be interested in playing and watch this become even more successfull.
Provide a decent recap of the events, make people curious to see the rest, make them eager to kick Lan Di's ass :p

I can't wait to see how much it will have raised after 31 Days.

They should Add Shenmue and Shenmue II HD as Stretch goals since all of this is making me really want to try the old games.

Huh? Its a game coming to PS4 and has been top of the list of requests people have made to Sony for games they want to see. If this was an X1/PC title you don't think MS would want to announce it during their conference?

I understand it's a game people want. But for a multi billion dollar corporation to hang their hat on it for street cred and then ask the public to fund it is a bit...weak.

Ultimately I don't care because I have real world shit to deal with :)

I think you might be on to something here....

Yeah, because I went to PlayStation Experience to see how many games would be on Xbox One. Makes sense.

Jokes aside, picture for a moment the rage on Gaf if the situation were completely reversed. Would you guys give M$ a passing grade for doing the same thing? I wonder.

So people are totally OK with this being funded via Kickstarter? Fascinating.
Sitting there in the theater, I was happy to see the game return, but at the same time I was uncomfortable with the idea of a Kickstarter at Sony's presentation.

So we, the game players, should take on the risk of funding a game because publishers don't want to? How far does this go?

Uh, this is literally the reason kickstarter exists and what its for.

I have read through the entire Kickstarter multiple times at this point; is there any information with regards to the game's budgeting aside from, "if it's not funded, Shenmue 3 will not go forward."?

And yeah, that promo video is... rough, to say the least.

Put your money where your mouth is, basically.

Also these outrage over kickstarter is hilarious.

They could definitely use some updates on the front page. If hiring a media manager can get it another million then I support it. I just feel that, at least during E3, there's enough hype and discussion to drive it up on its own. At this point, concern over the kickstarter page's presentation is unwarranted.

You do realise how much work goes into translating, right?

This is America. Make those Krauts speak English like everyone else. Then we can put the money towards important things like forklift races.

Shenmue I and II need to happen.. I mean I played both on Dreamcast, but I'd like to play them again. A video recap definitely won't cut it.

Still in shock about all of this! Years and years of waiting and it finally has become a reality. Shenmue was the first game I played on the Dreamcast. A kid at the time, the pure scale of the game, the story, the mini games, the sights and sounds and even the weather system was extraordinary and so ahead of it's time. Shenmue 2 was the main reason I purchased an Xbox. My love for the series only increased from there. The wait all this time was so unfortunate, but now that it's finally moving forward and seeing all the love and overwhelming support is a sight to see! Shenmue lives on!!!!

I'm sure fans would've also been happy if MS funded it. Why? Because someone actually gave a Fuck and gave Yu Suzuki a large stage to say, "hey, it's happening so help if you can."

My main gripe with the video is the voice acting, which is super-awful.

The rest is acceptable for a prototype.

On a positive note, I'm super excited for that "Rapport" system (one of the tiers). I think it hints at deepening the Ryo/Shenhua dynamic of the Guilin chapter of Shenmue II, which was one of the highlights of the entire series IMO.

I also hope we reach the last tiers, and thus having more settings (Bailu Village and Choubu). It's suprising that Bailu Village could be a disposable element of Shenmue III (after being so heavily mentioned at the same Guilin chapter mentioned before).

You have proved your allegiance. You may now enter the secret Sony cloakroom of NeoGAF.

I already said this a few days ago before the announcement, but I would buy whatever toaster this game releases on.

Never played a single Shenmue game in my life but just backed it for $29.

I don't have an Xbox to play the 2nd. Maybe I will try to find a playthrough or something and just watch it. Either way, I wanted to get behind this.

Because we need more tier options.

Console-exclusive titles don't bother me if they're also on PC. If it comes out on the console I own, I may play it there. If not, I will play it on PC.

That said, I think that, while a lot of Dreamcast orphans became the Xbox's earliest adopters, most people who really like Japanese games today own a PlayStation.

SEGA would be idiots not to cash in on this now, they could just release both Shenmue games on the PS4/PC with no improvements whatsoever and they'll earn a shitload.

Still honestly can't believe it though, Shenmue was the first game I ever played and I still remember being a little boy sitting on the floor when I finished the second over 12 years ago, some of the best memories of my life.

Agreed, I would love to replay them. I've honestly forgotten a ton about both games because it has been years since I played them. Plus my Dreamcast and games got destroyed in a flood and it's not like I can replay them on it now. :(

What kind of game was Shenmue like and also what made it special?
It was one of the earliest examples of a 3D open-world title, and everything was interactive, down to the most insignificant props and NPCs.

Think about GTA, and how you can generally only drive cars and kill people. Imagine everything you saw in San Andreas being uniquely interactive. Shenmue's environments aren't as large as San Andreas, but they are totally non-linear.

Beyond that, Shenmue was a full world simulation. It has a day/night cycle, where everything and everyone abides by an actual 24-hour clock. You need money to move the game forward, and you need to earn that money through conventional, real-world means, like getting a real-world job. You go to sleep at night. I'm only kind of scratching the surface here.

It was also action-packed with a Virtua Fighter-inspired fighting system, it invented the QTE mechanic, and it had a really great story that just got better throughout the two games.

The voice acting is placeholder. Ryo's voice actor for the actual game will be Masaya Matsukaze who played him in the Japanese versions of the first two games. Maybe an English dub will be a future stretch goal though.

Virtua fighter fight system, but also a brawler, but also a day in the life simulator, oh and hang on 100 yen. All wrapped in an anime-esque revenge story.

So one day you're beating down drunks for info on who killed your dad, then you decide to take a break from revenge, and spend all your money on capsule toys & arcade games.

Didn't the first two games cost an absurd amount of money? I wonder how they'll manage with the <10mln they'll gather from this kickstarter. Maybe they''ll be more efficient with the resources now.

Remember what it was like when you saw Mario 64 the first time? How you can define pre-mario 64 3D gaming, and post-mario 64 3D gaming.

Shenmue was that for modern gaming. It was also the last hurrah for Yu Suzuki, Sega's Shigeru Miyamoto. Suzuki is the guy behind Space Harrier, Outrun, Afterburner, Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, etc.

Imagine if Miyamoto suddenly stopped making games after Zelda; OOT. And imagine OOT ended on a cliffhanger. And the resolution got announced 15 years later with Miyamoto's glorious return.

What I don't think some realize is why this is surging the way it is. Much like that Yooka-laylee kickstarter, this is more about getting the band back together. This is a bunch of one of Sega's most legendary first party studios getting back together to make another game after all these years. That's insane.

Understatement of a lifetime. Shenmue was so radically far ahead of anything else at the time. A true visionary.

Shenmue is one of the most ambitious, forward thinking, revolutionary titles ever made. It has had an enormous influence on everything that has come out since. Modern gaming owes its roots to Shenmue.

TL;DR: Shenmue is basically the first modern open world game. It predates GTA3 and tons and tons of modern gaming conventions stem from it. It basically is the blueprint for modern video games.

It's really a shame that I think people who would play it for the first time, especially those who may not have been alive when it originally released, they aren't going to be able to fully appreciate it in the context of it's time.

Shenmue 2 holds up a lot better IMO because they ramped up the action and removed a lot of the mundane environment interactions. I love both games, and it would be hard to choose a favorite for myself, but I'd probably go with the first one simply because of nostalgia and atmosphere. Look no further than that pic of Dobuita above.

So after last night's announcement I decided to stop by a local mom and pop store here after work today to see if they had the Xbox version of Shenmue II. I was pretty skeptical they'd have it, as usually they are pretty terrible, but:

Holy shit they had it. Both discs are in good shape, though no manual. However, it was only 9.99 compared to 25 or more on ebay, and I'm sure prices are going to start rising due to Shenmue 3.

Hopefully, my dreamcast and the first one are still in a box at my dad's.

Yep, already shooting up to $50ish
