Sony is having another conference at Paris games week so sony also split announcements.... Sony has more to show too not just ms. Having one on the fall is better imo GamesCom is too close to E3 and gives sony more time to get demos ready and it spreads out announcements more.

Dude we get it. You love Sony and have to defend any post disparaging them, 3 in just the past 2 pages.

OT: Thought they did a solid showing. Would have loved to see more of what is promised for Gamescom etc but at least it isn't too far away. Not sure it was MS 'best ever' E3 though.

I think Microsoft could've done a better job surprising people with games.
Everything we got was very expected or very vague.
Tomb Raider gameplay wasn't exciting. We heard of extremely open areas beforehand, but what they showed us was just a very constrained climbing section. Not a good pick for a demo.
Gears 4 also seemed pretty bland. Nothing exciting about that.
ReCore was a surprise, but I can't really get excited about CGI trailer. Neither do I know how it looks, nor how its plays now.

Microsofts megaton was BC, thats amazing.

Before Sonys show I'd probably rated it a bit higher. But Sony showed with Horizon how you show of a new IP(take notes Rare) and showed with Uncharted how you blow people away with something they're already familar with(take notes Tomb Raider and Gears).

Overall its was a very good conference. They have an incredible line up for holiday 2015, far better than what Sony has on offer, and they showed that of.
I'd give it an 8.5/10.

I definitely think that Sony's conference was more exciting, but a good portion was Multi-platform.

From a standpoint of playing games now and this year, I think MS took it. Having Gears Ultimate Beta, Banjo 360, n+ 360, Mass Effect 360, and Game of Throws ep1 installed at absolutely no cost to me has slanted my view though.

The one thing that surprises me though is the lack of excitement around Games Preview (or whatever it's called).

I wouldn't say that Microsoft has caught up with Sony yet. I think their AAA lineups are probably about par but Microsoft is severely lagging in the downloadable space. Microsoft probably has more franchises in the downloadable space but they don't publish nearly as many as Sony has. Ori, Killer Instinct, and State of Decay will probably be mainstays for Microsoft but they need more one-off games.

Personally, I think Microsoft would do well to reboot Banjo as a downloadable game.

I think Microsoft is doing better, but about par is very generous. When Microsoft can release games during the other 9 months of the year, then I think they'll be at par.

Probably because of the experience on Steam.

Solid performance but I felt the core demos (halo and gears) were pretty muted - at least for me. Neither had me remotely interested in sticking with either franchise TBH.

The BC is a nice move and surely driven by competition in market and MS trailing worldwide. Ideally they make it worthwhile. I'm guessing Cell architecture coupled with Now means Sony won't try and match this but we'll see.

Liked Art Style of Cuphead.

Not a MS fan at all, but I think I can be objective.

  • BC is really nice, probably their best item from their conference. How good it is will depend on how quickly and consistently they add games to the list.
  • New controller looks great. I wouldn't spend that absurd amount on it, but if a similar one came out on PS4 and there was a solid BF deal, I would jump.
  • Halo looks good, not my type of game, and should sell really well for them.
  • MS early access is really cool, a feature I'd love to see on my PS4.
  • Holo Lens, neat, but not sure it will get adopted by enough game makers to make it worth the price.
  • Forza is Forza, looks nice, but similar to annual EA titles in its lack of true new substance.
  • ReCore lacks details, but looks interesting and could be really cool.
  • Tomb Raider looks good still, though not sure it blows me away.
  • Gears didn't show a lot, but for its fans I am sure it is exciting to see it.
  • Rare collection is a great deal for the content, a really nice release for the XB1.

Overall I think the system itself had a nice showing, though the games where mostly good vs wow for me. Maybe a 7 out of 10 with a + for the console feature additions 7.5 or 8 /10.

I think the bolded has more to do with Microsoft's Azure efforts around virtualization getting them most of the way there.

xD, I just elaborated on what could have been better because I thought its pretty obvious that showing Tomb Raider, Halo 5, Forza 6 etc. is extremly strong already.
I fully expect these games to be great, they just didn't show them off in a very exciting way.

that's because a lot of people see that as a negative because it's been a train wreck on steam.

It could be really cool but it have to have a lot better control than what steam does.

Sony clearly had some bombs drop especially for RPG fans and im sad I only own Xbox with some of PS ezclusives( I dont have time to play xbox much as is, RPGs would take me months to finish ),luckily KH3 and FFXV is multiplat. I pray FF7 comes on Xbox too or I may....buy a PS4....maybe.

But my point here is I think MS did very good and in a way did better then Sony.

Sony showed games that wont be out til 2017 or later most likely except UC4 whereas MS showee games that will be out this year and 2016.

I'll let Jim Sterling field this one

http://youtu.be/Y-9YbJEpy_Y

Would I be correct in thinking that Jim would like it a lot more if it were better curated?

If that's the case, I have a feeling like Microsoft will be far more strict in what makes it onto the service (queue the "M$ hates indies, cause they won't let everyone on Early Access").

For me it seems like it could be a great thing, assuming that it is left to indies and not the EA/Ubisoft's of the world.

I agree, allthough this conference showed a great shizzle reel of indies, some of which I'm really interested in. (The game of Molasses Flood for instance. Unsure if it is a Xbox exclusive. Also that game about the blind girl and Ashen)

But the Games Preview stuff could be a nice, alternate way of playing digital catch up. I know there is a lot of negativity about is, but when Early Access is done right it's great imo The fact you can try for an hour for free is good, and I think MS will curate the service to great extent. Remember that some of PC's hits are or started as Early Access stuff: DayZ, Minecraft, Kerbal Space Program, ...

That was really the nicest part about that whole section, for me anyway.

Haven't really looked at it too much with Steam, is it bad?
It's god awful, but hopefully the ability to demo any of the early access purchases on XBL will make it so you're actually buying a game, not some slap-dash con job using premade resources.

And MS has more to show at gamescon too??
not a real question
So your logic would be correct for both of them having 'the better strategy'

lolollolololololololol

?? It is better to stretch out announcements, my comment had nothing to do with more game announcements more so when. Great time to have a conference in the fall as there is nothing else around, all hype to yourself and it is a good amount of time to let the e3 hype die down.

After sleeping on it a few nights and getting over my initial disappointment of no banjo or football game I really think this was a great conference.

Recore looks nice despite only being a cgi trailer. Sea of thieves could have a ton of potential as a new IP. The rare collection would have been a incredible surprise if it wasn't spoiled for me shortly before the conference, what an amazing value at 30$. The backwards compatibility announcement is huge news and it works incredible. The indie games on display here all looked really really good and the early access program is a great initiative for consoles.

I think the thing that disappointed me and what ult8mately prevented this conference fromel being a 10 was the game play walk through of halo, gears, and tomb raider were all pretty flat and full of scripted events it seemed like. It was also disappointing to see them waste any time on HolOlEns.

Solid 8/10 showing from MSFT. Halo 5. Gears. Fallout 4. Backwards compatibility. Plus Sea of Thieves is a great concept, and even ReCore looks intriguing enough for me to keep my eye on it.

The best part is it was focused on GAMES! :)

In a way?

Microsoft did way better than Sony, they announced huge game-related features that were available the day of. They announced exclusives available this year, summer in fact, and showed a bunch of great demos for their titles. They announced new hardware and new exclusive partnerships.

Not to mention that Gamescom is going to have as much new content as this show according to Phil.

I dunno GT, I think they did about the same in terms of presentation and what was shown (which is to say fantastically), I think whichever inched ahead is really down to preference. I can see why people are losing their shit over the Sony conference and I can respect that.

I think the best part about competition is that Xbox BC, preview program, new controller, ect help to now push Sony to try and implement the same if not better solutions. It's really a win for everyone in the market

Inched?

They announced a kickstarter for Shenmue 3, a FF7 remake with rumblings that it might not come until 2018 even then it is PS4 first, showed off Horizon(which looked great.), they had Dreams which isn't this year, The Last Guardian which isn't this year, had COD map DLC and beta first and demoed Uncharted 4.

The only real exclusives they announced and showed for this year were the COD DLC maps.

Mean while Microsoft showed Forza 6 for the first time(2015), demoed Halo 5(2015), announced a new franchise with Recore, announced another new franchise with Sea of Thieves, announced two new first party exclusive for summer with Gears of War Ultimate and Rare Replay, announced a new controller, announced backwards compatibility that worked the day of and demoed Gears 4 which is more than a year from release.

Inched? Microsoft was a mile ahead this E3.

Phil was also at the PC conference and announced Killer Instinct and Gears of War Ultimate for Windows 10.

Well you're in luck because it seems like 2016 won't have a 9 month gap. I think Microsoft's line-up had a huge hole blown through it when they dropped Kinect. They probably cancelled multiple projects based on that strategic decision.

Sony had a good but mostly 2016 and further focused conference while Microsoft showed off a lot of experiences the day of and for this year... that is huge in my book.

Still, those three things are fuckin' huge. Inched was the wrong word, sure, but it's still easy to see why people in the Sony crowd are going fuckin' nuts.

LMAO so good. Not really based in any objectivity unfortunately, sounds like a fanboy rant, and really comes across as heavily biased.
Since when does only the same year matter for E3? It has always been about future games, plans and announcements and sony knocked it out of the park. Look at the poll in the grading thread, you are in the minority. I mean we only hav ea couple extra months for uc4 which looked amazing and R and C.....the horror.

He is one of the most embarrasing fanboys on this forum so not surprising.

On topic - Microsoft's conference was pretty decent. It is unfair to hold anything against them because Sony's conference was like a once in a life time thing. It will probably never happen again. My only issue is TR looks really underwhelming especially doubly so after seeing UC4. Gears did not show anything interesting gameplay wise. I think MS could have avoided showing it until it was further in development. Interested about Recore but I think the best game that they have is easily and I mean easily Cuphead. Looks absolutely phenomenal.

The gameplay demonstrations were all pretty bad. They had a really strong chance to show off Halo 5, Gears 4 and TR. Halo 5 had the best demo and even that one wasn't particularly impressive. It felt like a CoD demo almost in it's focus on the scripted sequences. TR was just... bad. Especially more so compared to the bombtastic UC4 one we got. And Gears 4, while a great surprise, was a poor showing because it didn't focus on the strengths of the Gears franchise.

Better demos would have bumped up the conference a few points for me.

Well to be honest, Sony had bare announcements for anything to come out this year at E3 besides the obvious third party stuff. That looks really poor that they had no substantial things for 2015, as the year continues, while Microsoft showed some must buys only 2 months away with the Rare Collection and Gears at E3. The Sony conference for 2015 was boring.

I say this as a Xbox fan, Sony killed it this year. MS had a very respectable showing this year but nothing, absolutely nothing was going to match up against FF7+Shenmue3. Nothing. Shit was crazy at the Sony event, I don't even have much love for either title but it was almost surreal when they kept following up with megaton after megaton. If you were a gamer who's even had passing familiarity with either franchises, you HAD to have felt something during that conference.

Sony
Shenmue 3(Kickstarter) - no release date, development just started and it's most likely 2017+.
FF7 - no release date, PS4 first and rumblings of 2018 or longer.
The Last Guardian - 2016, honestly a niche title but my interest in it shouldn't sway its importance.
Dreams - Didn't show anything that looked like a... game? Also 2016.
Horizon Zero Dawn - Easily my favorite thing at their conference but also 2016.
COD - DLC first on PS4 and beta first on PS4, this is a great catch for some stuff for 2015.
Uncharted 4 demo - Honestly didn't enjoy the constant framerate issues but looked great graphically, again 2016.

Microsoft
Halo 5 Guardians - First real gameplay of campaign and an awesome new multiplayer mode for 2015 and on-stage demo.
Backwards Compatibility - The day of!
Forza Motorsport 6 - First gameplay and some great announcements for the series for 2015.
Fable Legends - new boss shown and pretty updated graphics from past showings for 2015.
Rise of the Tomb Raider - Awesome demo and coming this year! :D
Recore - Great to see a new franchise announced but a 2016 title with no gameplay.
Rare Replay - 30 games for $30 and in August! Yes Please :)!
Gears Ultimate Edition - 19 multiplayer maps, completely remastered experience and coming this summer, again another awesome title.
Sea of Thieves - This looked really interesting but tis a 2016 title.
Gears 4 - Jaw dropping graphics(watch the gamersyde video) for being over a year out and I loved the dark horror direction, 2016 D:.

Microsoft announced two new exclusives for this year and they showed off three new games coming this year with gameplay for the first time.

I liked it a lot. A bit stronger than their last two showings (which were already solid E3 conferences).

+Rare's return to core gaming
+Focus on games coming out this fall. Not too shabby lineup either.
+Backwards compatability
+A bunch of the indie games looked great

Recore looked the most interesting out of Microsoft's new IPs, but it's too bad they didn't show gameplay from it.

Really liked Microsofts showing but I still fell like they could have had more games. Gamescom in a few months so we shall see.

Only reason I liked Microsofts showing better than Sony is because Japanese games spark no interest for me at all, and a lot of Sonys big announcements where just that. Only thing I am jealous of is UC4, and that is still just a cinematic experience.

No point starting a list war.

What people love at e3 is the unknown. The problem Ms had is almost everything was already known.

Ms had a solid show but really the biggest announcement was bc. And that turn out to be limited bc.

Sony announce thing people didn't know about and have ask years for. Even if you don't care about them at all you still have to respect the announcement. They are huge deal to a lot of people. Just look at the reactions.

Well, if you only consider games and features releasing this year, sure. It is your opinion and you're definitely allowed to have and post about it.

It just sounds kind of ridiculous to many when someone says a conference that's high point was a limited backwards compatibility won by a mile over the one that had announcements for some of the most wanted, anticipated and sought-after titles of, I dunno, gaming history I guess. Just saying that these reactions shouldn't surprised you.

What people love at e3 is the unknown.

This is definitely one of the more important aspects of E3 to me. With E3, the hype usually reaches the heights where I don't even give a fuck about release date anymore.

If it's my opinion...

Why are you guys not allowing me to have it?

I'm sorry but Sony announcing two games that aren't coming out for two more years... is not exciting for me; no matter what franchise they belong to.
Yeah you are missing a lot from sony's show like street fighter 5, No mans sky, firewatch, World of Final Fantasy to name a few., your list is biased as hell. why am I not surprised, so yes no objectivity. MS 1 new IP was just CGI..Halo they have been showing since 2013....another gears and another forza..ugh. Release dates have zero to do with how good a conference showing is, most of MS games like Halo, and TR have been shown at 3 straight e3's, YAWN, and the gameplay was underwhelming for all 3 halo, gears and TR. UC and Horizon are among the best that was shown at e3 easily.

You are also ignoring the impact of each announcement, Sony had big surprises, they people were really hyped about for years, most what MS showed was safe and known.

Your argument is also full of inconsistencies. You say we can;t get excited for games a couple years out, when was crackdown, halo 5, tomb raider revealed first? Halo 5 2013, Tr 2013, Crackdown 2014...all 2 years at least before launch. Did you say the same about them? You cannot downplay the significance of announcing fan fiction games that people thought were never happening because "It's not going to be out for awhile".

You're praising MS for announcing new franchises with Recore and Sea of Theives but criticizing Sony for announcing Horizon, Dreams, and The Last Guardian because they're not coming out this year. Recore had a CGI trailer instead of any sort of gameplay like Sony's games and if you think Sea of Thieves will release before 2017 you're going to be disappointed.

And MS was MILES AHEAD because they announced a collection of Rare games, an improved Gears 1, and the ability to play some 360 games on Xbox One? And the first party demos sucked. Please, tell me that Halo 5, Tomb Raider, and Gears 4 had better demos than Uncharted 4 and Horizon. And if content for the current year is what makes an E3 conference I really want to hear what you thought of MS' conference last year.

?? It is better to stretch out announcements, my comment had nothing to do with more game announcements more so when. Great time to have a conference in the fall as there is nothing else around, all hype to yourself and it is a good amount of time to let the e3 hype die down.

Hype is subjective. How it goes up, down, climax or deflate is all subjective to the person receiving the information. To say it will exactly go down by October 27th is subjective and mostly false.

Gamescon August 5th through the 9th. Summer is about over so spreading out their 3 big games + more is better than in October when Holiday Games are already releasing.

Paris Games Week October 28th through Nov 1...
Errm, Halo 5 launches for Xbox One on the 27th so everyone knows how much of a PR/Marketing onslaught this will be.

Anyway good luck. lol

I feel the same. But for UC4. I didn't even finish UC3 and feel the series & style of gameplay is played out.
