New Star Wars Battlefront Coverage (Oct 5)

I think for me what hits hardest, even if it's been obvious for awhile, is how small and limited the scope of play looks. The infantry combat seems simple but also plenty fun, which is why I'm still keen to play and, if I'm happy with the beta, will look into buying. It doesn't look like a complete Battlefield clone in infantry play, and the presentation/feedback seems satisfying. It looks like one of those games you can boot up for a short yet fun round of sci fi shootbang, a little bit like what I used to do with Team Fortress 2 and Payload, which was a mode that had a nice balance of play and round time for me.

But yeah, the actual scope of the game does seem a bit flat. Limited vehicle options, none of which have demonstrated themselves as impressive or appealing. Flight combat looks pretty fucking dull and just kinda there, to be honest. Hero stuff also doesn't look particularly impressive, just a bit flat and underwhelming in animation and presentation. My gut says this won't have much in the ways of heroes, vehicles, or even maps.

So yeah, while it seems like a pretty fun infantry Star Wars game, it also gives me the impression of a game working within a fairly limited scope of play and options. And while this is expected for a game pushing to release this year with no concessions, and DICE made it clear early on this isn't "Battlefront 3", and the production requirements for a modern Battlefront 3 would be huge, it's still a bit of a disappointing point of comparison to see what Battlefront 1, 2, and the scrapped 3 stuff was doing versus what DICE's vision is.

Good post, my concerns started at last e3 when they stated there wouldn't be space battles and the more the devs spoke the more I began to think, in terms of content, this would be disappointing.

How can they complain about a lack of game modes and weapons when what they played had most of the modes unavailable (and most likely also the weapons)?

Yea if they played the beta it's going to be extremely limited.

I also wonder if the people calling it Janky are just looking at the one Lightsaber video? Aside from that it's not that bad. And the other video the guy isn't playing like a spas lol. Other than that the normal combat looks great. So unless you're referring to that one video I don't see how the game itself is janky

Blacks Ops 3 looks better than this, which is what was not expecting to say. The shooting looks very mediocre and janky movements :(

Is it possible for a delay until next year or does this game really has to be released near the movie?

From the demo I played BOPS3 is actually really good. I would say it's the best CoD game since BLOPS1. I am really looking forward to it. The maps in the demo was great, tight gameplay and hit detection seemed much better than latest CoD games.

Mostly agreed but thankfully I wasn't expecting anything more than a simple, fun, casual, quick action shooter from this so I'm not disappointed. My biggest concern will be to see if DICE pulls off the launch. I'm hoping the more limited scope allows them to polish the core of the game well.

Yeah, that's basically where I'm at. I accept this is basically run-and-gun infantry Star Wars that could be a good bit of fun, with dumb space flight and hero fluff. But I'm more worried about the actual launch day/window build stability. Because man, DICE/EA have a sordid history with that shit.

I'm also wary paying full price (since Origin's store prices are fucking stupid) if it's light on content. It's just value perception for me. If I enjoy the beta for what it is I'll grab it eventually. But I'm not paying AU$89.99.

I don't think that EA would be ready to miss out on the hype from the movie release. It seems that is designed to be a cash grab movie tie-in.

All today's impression articles/videos are from the beta build, so most content is locked off.

And that video is the first in the OP, so naturally that is what people are looking at. Maybe they should be switched around so the videos people in here has said looks better and is played better than Jackfrags' should be first in the OP.

Looking deeper into it... The first person mode looks way better, the pod mode looks super fun, reminds me of the similar mode in Crysis 2.

Not sure what I expected but the weapon look and play seem like same old weapons from other battle front games. Couple of them look they should be in a ww1 game. They also seem to shoot like basic weapons from other games. Even sounds like them. I guess I expected something more scifi.

That's true and I have no issue with people seeing that video first. I just also hope they check out the other ones as well. because the game still looks the same to me which is great. I can't really wait to play it.

Yeah, im not sure why people would pick 3rd person over it. I can understand in certain situations like cover, but overall 1st person looks better.

Wait how can they sound like weapons for other games when they literally use the Star Wars sound effects?

not good, not good! Looks like the game might need more time! But we know that is not going to happen with the movie releasing this year and DICE's record. Well this might be the one those QA testers were talking about.

There's so little recoil on the machine gun type weapons, players can seemingly just hold down the fire button and point it in the direction of enemies. That's disappointing on two different levels - managing recoil is fun, and adds a lot of skill, but I also don't remember PEWPEWPEWPEWPEW being a part of the Star Wars movies.

That tag...

Nah the game that was being discussed was AC. And again. Outside of that Hero stuff. If you look at the other videos the game actually looks and seems to play great. The combat looks great honestly.

Still watching the vids, I made it through a few and wanted to comment:

  • Can't stand the HUD. Looks thoroughly terrible.
  • Why did the make the sniper look and sound like a traditional bullet rifle? Anything other than a pew-pew sniper is a fail.
  • Would have liked to see Endor and Co-op gameplay

That being said, still excited to try it out this week.

I'll probably wait for the sequel so they can implement things that appeal to me apart from the common grunt gameplay like space battles. This is not enough to warrant a buy from me.

Its...so....pretty.

I think it looks pretty good with the exception of the hero animations. Anybody else actually excited that its more simple than Battlefield? Those games have gotten to the point where they seem impossible to balance properly since there are so many options available. Ill be happy to get back to something a bit more simple.

Either way, we can all judge for ourselves come tomorrow......I'm still excited to see what DICE did. But I can't see myself dropping $60 on the game for the modes they dropped.

Honestly that's where I'm at. I appreciate COD for the unlocks and all that Jazz which is why I'll be buying that game as well.

But I'm also in the boat for something simple. While I don't know how many weapons are in this game I'm ok with a fair number. Just let me drop in. Shoot some shit in the SW universe and have some quick fun.

I REALLY think Drop Zone is going to be the go to mode in this game. It honestly looks really great. Walker Assault will be fun to play with GAF a few nights a week.

That's fair. I can see the concern people have for perceived lack of content. It's definitely a fair complaint.

I'm positive that while some animations look awkward, it'll be fun to actually play. All impressions I've read seemed positive.

They ruined it... they f*cking ruined it :'(
Ok I'm exaggerating but only a few Star Wars video games were good...and this one seems average so now I'm going to cry since it was my big PS4 game this fall. I'll still try it of course because it may be enjoyable but I was hoping for something else.

IP is already milked to death with stupid toys like the hero mashers series (same for Marvel toys) and now disappointing game... I hope the movie will keep its promises.

Eh, play the demo/beta before dooming it. A lot of games look boring to play but end up being fun.

I feel like a lot of the criticisms this footage is getting stems from comparing it to other shooters rather than looking back at how the first two Battlefronts played. Vehicle and Hero tokens aside, this looks like a great iteration of an average (gameplay-wise) series of games.

I am a huge Star Wars fan so I played the life out of the old games and probably will do the same with this but even I recognize that the previous Battlefronts didn't have great gameplay and definitely had some frustrating mechanics. Especially when playing BF2's Heroes and Villains. Third and first person shooting/piloting look good imo, Luke and Vader gameplay looks just as awkward as BF2 but with better visuals that serve to really bring out the jankiness in their movements.

Hah, well - I stand by it. I don't remember any automatic fire in the original three movies, especially not with that rate of fire and that accuracy. Most shots were semi-auto, or at the very most a burst of fire. People have been upset that Battlefront 3 would be a Battlefield clone, but when I see those gunplay mechanics, I sure wish it was.

A voice of reason in the darkness.

But nah. It's 2015. We expect blah blah blah.

People wanted Battlefront back. We got some Battlefront back and we get to play it on Thursday. People see some footage and want to turn it into Battlefield...when people were getting tired of Battlefield! =x
