Details on Halo 5: Guardians matchmaking in Arena mode

A healthy amount of skepticism is one thing, especially after MCC. Am sure 343 will be listening to feedback and tweaking the new system is necessary.

At a certain level however, pessimism isn't exactly going to stimulate that kind of dialog. I wouldn't even bother entertaining it if my mind had been made up to that degree.

No deranking is kinda going to screw a bit the bell curve distribution but anyway seasons are a month long which isn't a long enough time for this problem to show it's ugly head imo

Nice. Though I wish the season's spanned longer than a month. Doesn't really incentivise me to work my way through the ranks, bronze-upwards, if all my effort will be wiped by the month's end.

What does neg bombing someone mean in that statement?

I hear Elzar knows a negative thing or 20 about dropping neg bombs.

I don't read "no deranking" from what was posted. I'm reading that a loss won't immediately drop you down a whole rank. It's progress based, so you lose some progress. I'm under the impression that you can eventually drop a rank if you lose enough games.

Please do explain why I have to be positive about awful garbage? Especially from a developer like 343?

Um, you don't have the game, so you have essentially zero authority to even render an opinion on it yet, let alone a fact.

To know the outcome of this "ranking" system, just look at Halo:Reach. An abysmal failure.

Are you Nostradamus? Your secret identity is awesomely preserved if so.

Placement matches are completely awful by default. Flip a coin 10 times and use that to determine a players rank? Fuck off.

You do realize the placement matches likely won't place anyone higher than Silver unless they wreck the opponents 10/10 matches in a row right? Did you play Killer Instinct's placement matches by any chance? If not, you are likely as ignorant about placement matches as this post makes you seem.

No derank? Great, so little jimmy who magically gets placed in a rank far higher than he should ever because of the bullshit of placement matches is now stuck there, making his team lose constantly while getting completely shat on every game. That is fun for no one.

See above. Ignorance is bliss.

And that is assuming 343 can actually make the system function anything like they claim. Their record on that speaks for it self.

Please make a game, release it, and show them how it's done.

Halo 4, absolutely no skill based ranking or matchmaking.

You're wrong.

MCC, completely broken ranks and matchmaking.

MCC was four games duct-taped together. But I'll concede that MCC was pretty damn broken, and still is kinda broken. But ya know that was like, multiple different companies right? Not just 343i to blame there, as much as we want a single party to point the finger at.

Halo 5 beta matching pros with people playing their first game.

Betas, how do they work?

So do tell me why I should be positive about this?

It's probably futile for you to be positive about anything Halo-related, which begs the question why you're still skulking around Halo threads.

That's the most telling statement, actually. Both Josh Holmes and Frankie personally came into this thread to tell him to go away. Two senior developers personally telling a fan not to buy the game is fairly unusual, lol.

Ouch!

On topic: If Halo 5 can eliminate the weird rubber banding I experienced in Reach/3, I can't complain. NZ/AUS always gets shafted, but this is nothing new in any non-PC game, with an exception to Battlefield and its server browser.

What I understand is that the Australian server situation has improved significantly since the beta. Won't know for sure how it (our game) performs at scale for another week but I'm optimistic.

The final CSR ranks for Halo 5: Guardians are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Onyx, and Champion.

So we established the word "rank" means the 7 big categories.

As you win, you will progress through the 6 tiers of your rank. If you are skilled enough to continue winning at tier 6, you will advance to the next rank (yay!). Losing games will cause your progress within a rank to decrease, but you will never drop down a whole rank from losing.

Tiers != ranks. Deranking = going from one of the big category into a lesser one. And losing tiers is entirely possible.

Also, plain as day

For example, if you spend all month working your way into Silver, losing won’t drop you back to Bronze.

They are saying that in context of losing one game. If you were making progress, you won't suddenly lose ALL progress and drop a rank immediately.

That's how I read it anyway. No deranking wouldn't make any sense to me.

I would think that having to win to progress, but having to play well (not necessarily win) to ensure you don't drop ranks is the best solution. I hope that's what it means in that wording.

If you are Silver tier, you will NOT drop to Bronze. But if you are Silver 6, you can drop down to Silver 1 if you keep losing.

I can read it both ways. I'll wait for a clarification. No losing rank due to repeat losses seems like an odd decision.

edit: would it be to prevent the infamous "derankers?"

Did you not read what I posted? It's clear what they mean.

Yes I understand it now. I didn't see what Josh Holmes posted.

Thanks for your warm and kind disposition.

Still need clarification!

Actually seems pretty clear.

This will be fine depending on the length of seasons.

And yes, this system is to prevent the infamous de-rankers who could potentially drop into a tier that they really shouldnt be in.

As he said, the matchmaking rank will still change regardless, so I can't see how this would stop that.

Can we use this line against people blindly praising this aswell? Awesome!

Been using this tag since ~05 but what ever.

Because it totally wasn't possible to land directly in semi-pro/pro in the beta. Nope, couldn't happen...

See above. Ignorance is bliss.

You cannot drop a full devision. Just like the beta...

Please make a game, release it, and show them how it's done.

Oh look, it's that's argument...

You're wrong.

Oh, you thought that CSR bandaid actually did something? Hahahahahaa

The most broken parts of MCC were the parts 343 worked on. And even then, there is absolutely no excuse for releasing such a broken product. Ever.

I can be quite positive about good things. Forge looks great sans the ridiculous fact that it's not even in at launch. The rank emblems themselves look good.

I just don't know why people expect everything Halo to be a slurplejerk especially after Reach, Halo 4 and the abomination of MCC.

Because MMR isnt the only thing that is considered when matching.

But yes, people can for all intents and purposes lower their MMR to a point they get matched with other lower MMR folks.
But if people enjoy doing that to themselves, then more power to them. I enjoy playing and getting better at the game.

I know right? It couldn't be any clearer yet people still keep asking.

And yes, it's likely to prevent deranking trolls. But said trolls will just fire up the game under a different gamertag (since your xbox live gold is shared on your console), and do that ad nauseum. There is no limit to the number of new gamertags you can create, so they can just 'roll a new char' if they want to troll bronze players. It's sad that shitty people ruin it for everyone.

Not a fan of Seasons and I hope not every list is ranked. I don't want to compete all the time so a Social playlist would be welcomed.

Also, I'm a huge fan of these bans. Every game with ranking needs to have strict penalties.
There has got to be a social playlist outside of Warzone right? At least I really hope so.

I didn't realise this was a thing. Sounds like hard work that might be better spent gettin gud.

I haven't blindly praised anything. In fact, if you check my post history, you'll note "cautiously optimistic" being stated, by me, in several of my posts on Halo. I hope it's everything it's cracked up to be, but you are beyond a shadow of a doubt "blindly pessimistic"

Been using this tag since ~05 but what ever.

I think you missed the joke. Do you know who Nostradamus was?

Because it totally wasn't possible to land directly in semi-pro/pro in the beta. Nope, couldn't happen...

Which is a GOOD thing. Derankers suck. At least this makes them go through the hassle of creating a fake email, fake gamertag, go back through qualifying matches, etc EVERY time they want to troll low-skill lobbies.

Oh look, it's that's argument...

And your arguments are so original, well-researched, and eloquent?

Oh, you thought that CSR bandaid actually did something? Hahahahahaa

It did enough for me, for the time that I spent with H4 anyway.

The most broken parts of MCC were the parts 343 worked on. And even then, there is absolutely no excuse for releasing such a broken product. Ever.

Microsoft had final authority over release.

I can be quite positive about good things. Forge looks great sans the ridiculous fact that it's not even in at launch. The rank emblems themselves look good.

But I want it NOW! Said every child ever.

I just don't know why people expect everything Halo to be a slurplejerk especially after Reach, Halo 4 and the abomination of MCC.

Many of us don't expect anything. Many of us are waiting to find out. Many of us aren't blindly optimistic or doggedly, blindly pessimistic either. It's crazy, I know.

Ok ok, I'm putting what's left of the troll feed in the trash and leaving the exhibit now. Sorry thread.

This thread went downhill with the spaghetti quote posting. Now it's just back and forth "I get the last word" nonsense.

Any plans for a mobile app for stats, 343i?

They're opening up the code for stats to anyone who wants it. So even if 343 don't create/fund their own, you'll see plenty of them about.

@ultimaotaku Yeah, we’ll be matching Aussies to Australian datacenter at launch, so connection will be good.

Hopefully matchmaking works correctly at launch and matches regions to nearest datacenter :).

Not everything is a "slurplejerk." Many of us have openly criticized aspects of the Halo 5 Beta and some things that have been shown or announced since then without the need to verbally attack the developers.

For anyone interested, they also posted a breakdown on the commendation system after their blog about the matchmaking stuff. I didn't think it warranted a whole new thread, but if that's the case someone else can copy/paste it into a big quote box and start a new thread lol. It's the latest article on Waypoint IIRC. Commendations look to be what we've come to expect from Reach/4, though, so not a lot of super new info there (other than the somewhat expected REQ-packs from completing commendations). It was rolled into the B is for Bravo blog/post from 4 or 5 hours ago, a VERY long one, but it's in there.

About being cautiously optimistic...I've played over 40 hours of the multiplayer beta. I was extremely satisfied with what I played so I have no doubt I'm going to love this game.

How is everyone saying great? Hope y'all enjoy your stay in ELO hell, rank should be based on personal skill fuck teamwork based rankings.
Why do people still think ELO hell exists? Oh, they can't admit they suck.

If you are better than the average player in that rank, your rank will increase.

I played about 40 games and couldn't get in to it, but the beta is nearly a year old at this point. The whole point was to test these things early, and a lot of things have changed as a result of that. The ranking placements have undoubtedly been updated as well.

^ this. If you are better than your current rank, you will improve, you just have to 'carry' your team. Hell, since the enemy team has 4 randoms and you only 3 in your team (4v4) you should have the better 'control' of the match through individual performance. Or as I sometimes like to say, you have 25% less chance to have an idiot on your team.

Play enough games and you will average a 50%+ winrate as long as you belong in a higher rank than the one you are currently in.

What kind of playlists are scheduled for seasonal resets? I mean I'd hate to spend all this time reaching a high rank in Team Arena, grinding slowly up only to have it all wiped at the end of the month.

I would like them to use the titanfall approach where you get to keep your rank but start at a lower league. Or the Starcraft 2 way by playing less placement matches.

Double post but this wasn't really true for me. By the end, I was literally getting perfections in matches, and a lot of matches would end like 50-17, but if I lost the next one at like 50-44 and despite being 22-2 or something, I'd go down due to loss. I don't mind the loss thing. It's just highlighting how important going in with friends or a strong team is. Because even if you belong in a group two more ranks than you're in, the teammates you'll get will still go 3-21.

So I think I'm going to only do campaign, Warzone or the casual lists like SWAT, get the controls down, the headshots and then try and find solid players to go my initial ten matches.

Ok, so, theoretically someone could intentionally play crap in the first 10 matches, hopefully (if they end up in 10 losses) land a lower skill tier and then proceed to play at their true skill level which would be higher than where they are placed, and indulge in their digital fantasy fetish wrecking the opposition and feeling all God tier and shit.

If I unserstood correctly that won't be possible, because on top of this ranking system you also have a hidden MMR system, which will match you with people with the same MMR.

This should mean, if you are put in Bronze, but your MMR is actually one of an average Diamond player, you will get matched against Diamond players.
