SPOILER ALERT: Halo 5 (Spoiler) Spoiler Thread of Spoilers Spoiler

Locke is boring because he's a new character with no history with the franchise on top of having no personality. Why do I care about this guy?

Chief also has no personality in the games, but we know Chief. We know what he did in the games, and we know that there were people around him that mattered to him. We get excited for a "Chief" Halo game because Master Chief is Halo.

You don't go to watch an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie because he's a good actor. You do it for the cheesy one liners and ass kicking.

Locke is the new guy trying to be Arnold and thus replacing him in the lead role, while Arnold makes a cameo.

Nobody wants Locke to be "another dull character", but that's what we got.

Because there's no point in arguing with circular logic. It's exhausting.

Why should I care about Chief? The games certainly haven't given me a reason to. Ah and here we go with the Chief is Halo argument again. Can't tell you how many times I've seen that despite how laughable such a claim is. Not even going to entertain it as that opens up an entirely new can of worms.

Either way, my point is don't cry about having to play as Locke because he's uninteresting and then cry because you aren't getting to play as Chief. Neither character is particularly interesting and neither character has gameplay that's entirely different than the other to warrant such a complaint. If you're playing for cheesy one-liners and ass kicking then every playable character in the Halo franchise delivers on those two aspects including Locke.

So the Chief's Forerunner "enhancements" from the Librarian aren't explained or addressed in H5? Do we get any more insight into the Forerunners or learn any more about more of them living? And is there any mention of the Precursors anywhere?

Forgive my poor summation skills.
-Halsey tells infinity stuff is gonna go down
-Locke, his band of power rangers, and Buck retrieve Halsey and kill Jul
-Halsey says Cortana is back and is waking up the Bayformers known as "Guardians"
-Chief sees a vision from what seems to be space magic and thinks Cortana is alive
-Chief says he's gonna go get Cortana
-Infinity says aww hell no but Chief is a strong man who just wants to save his waifu so he goes rogue and blue team follows
-Locke and Co. go to meridian where a bayformer wakes up and a bionicle known as "Warden Eternal" says he is in service to cortana
-Bionicle believes that AI are the rightful inheritors of the mantle (?)
-Locke and Co. meet up with an AI voiced by an anime character to stop Cortana
-Cortana tries to get all of the AIs to join her because she is AI jesus and can cure them of Rampancy
-Cortanas main goal is to force everyone to stop fighting by threatening them with the Bayformers, basically nuclear deterrence but with big robots
-Cortana tries to put Blue Team in a Cryptum till her goal is achieved
-Locke and Co. save chief
-Infinity is stranded out in BFE Space Quadrant 342134
-Cortana is taking possession of the Halo rings as a backup I guess

10/10 summary.

"Chief, I'm already a demon."

I thought locke was fine. In Halo games I care about the overarching story more than the Mc. Chief has always sucked to me, but I didn't grow up on halo( I played 3 first).

The enhancement was just an immunity to the composer so that Chief doesn't become a promethean knight.

While the Chief's arc could very well wrap up in 6, they've already said that they aren't making a trilogy any more, instead referring to it as a saga. So everything doesn't necessarily need to wrap up in the next game.

Also, if the Librarian just made Chief immune to the composer, how does Cortana contact him in the second mission? I figured he has some sort of connection to the Domain now, but it doesn't sound like it's explained in the story.

She used this device called plot convenience.

Pretty much why my favorite Halo games are the ones without Chief (Reach, Wars, and ODST). The only exception to that was Halo 2 and that was mainly due to the Arbiter.

This is my problem with the story, instead of building up on something that was laid down in the first game they brought new (completely unnecessary) shit up in the 2nd game in the new trilogy, which the 3rd game will try to finish.

If you think about it, the overarching story of Halo 5 is pretty much the same as Halo 4 but with Cortana. I never asked for this !

Probably because this isn't a trilogy anymore, but a saga.

i just want a new halo game that can capture the feeling of dropping on the halo for the first time in CE. they almost did it in a sense with the genesis mission in h5 but it wasnt really the same

I feel the part where Osiris was running down the side of a Guardian in I think mission 12 or 13 was the best part of the campaign. Loved that part.

If we want to talk about hypocrites -

Cortana: My Spartans saved the human race. What can you guys do?
Locke: Halsey thinks we can stop this
Cortana: But Halsey will pay for her crimes soon!

But if she didn't commit those crimes, where would your spartans be?

smh the writing in this story

yep i just thought it was too short

I was thinking about that a little. It was missing a little something, but it may have been too hokey had it went on for too long. It may have been cool is they have you use your abilities to dodge stuff moving around. The second playthrough I was basically in the air the whole time.

Is that actual dialogue from the game? Because if it is this is on the same level as Phantom Menace.

Do they specifically state anywhere in 5 whether or not that's all the Librarian did or are you just assuming?

I thought it was part of the lore that the domain could also transmit information to individual
forerunners without the need of special equipment in the forms of vision or dreams.

I'd actually like to share some interesting thoughts from someone over at HaloArchive (here).

Sounds more to me like she's referring to the fact that Halsey knowingly built her with such a sort life-span which the Gravemind then attempted to use to corrupt her.

Say what you want about her but Halsey must've been pretty popular among her male peers back in the day if Cortana is made in her image :p

And the Halsey is the monster for creating Spartans when she was asked to but Cortana isn't for killing anyone who doesn't agree to her terms :p

These Warden battles are not fun and there's just way too many of them. It really brings down my enjoyment of the Campaign.

I have to agree there. He definitely took away more than he added. I didn't mind him the first couple times but it became a chore. I liked him as a character, and the concept of him controlling infinite bodies but the encounters not so much.

Why does 343 hate Brutes so much? I think it would be cool if they reintroduced them in a new way with new AI behaviors. Make them super aggressive like the Chieftains in 3, have them bum rush your ass.

I think the main reason why I dislike the story so much is because it's the AI gone bad trope with a plot motive that is more or less the same as the one seen in Halo 4. I wish Cortana stayed dead after that send off in Halo 4 and we had build up on other things in Halo 5. That and the fact that the "rivalry" that the marketing team made us think about didn't really exist in any sense.

Delusional power hungry lunatics rarely make sense. Not sure why you guys are attempting to find some in those statements.

You know who else was delusional and power hungry but not laughably bad or a hypocrite ?
Saren Arterius.

I don't get it either, Brutes never got to anywhere near as fleshed out as they could be unfortunately. Hopefully they are cool in Halo Wars 2. I really want them to bring back the original Jackals as well and have them be scouts and snipers. The new Jackals could behave like Predator, give them active camo and have them attempt to flank or trap the player. That kind of behavior would be more fitting of their visual design in my mind.

Could you imagine a four faction battle on a huge battlefield. No fucks given, just utter chaos. Put that Halo 2 scene to shame with the new hardware.

UNSC vs. Covenant vs. Brutes vs. Prometheans.

Just beat the game.

Locke is a pretty interesting character. I really liked the last mission where Cortana is trying to get into the heads of Osiris by bringing up their past. Overall, I found Osiris as an good welcome to the Halo universe. I hope they go more into Locke's past as a rogue assassin before ONI in Halo 6. Give a little more for fans to see.

Now for the game....fuckin A. That was amazing. The environments in all the missions were very diverse (snow, canyon, forest planet, forerunner). I couldn't even find a single skull but found about half the Intel. They're well hidden.

The music was perfect....the mix of classic Halo meets new was amazing. I was getting pumped during big vehicle fights, which were very fun. Sounds effects were top notch. Word of advice, set sound effects to about 6 and blast the Music up to 10.

My favorite mission was The Sword of Sanghelios...being apart of the civil war between Arbiter's SOS and the Covenant was amazing. Probably one of the best missions I have ever seen in an FPS game period.

Story was also great...props to 343i for taking a bold risk and going that route. When Cortana started recruiting those AI's and they started converting one by one I was really taken by surprise.

I beat the game on heroic and am craving more. Can't wait to try Legendary and then Legendary coop with skulls on.

Not to be dismissive of anyone, but nit picky and negative story impressions are always the loudest and most prevalent immediately after each new Halo release.

What is "tropey" or "cliche" to one person is not to others.

I'm just glad no one is upset at the gameplay. Halo 4 had a lot of gripes with gameplay, but I don't see negative impressions of that.

Evil AI taking over the world is like the definition of sci fi trope. I don't think that's nitpicky at all.

Especially since this storyline has now been repeated in the Halo universe multiple times between Mendicant Bias and Guilty Spark.

It was also one of the original planned plot points of Halo CE that Cortana was gonna go nuts for some reason.

Which started happening...and then she died.
Then they bought her back with the trope.

Not defending it, it's still dumb as all hell that they brought her back, especially when they have Blue Team for Chief to play off.

So is the Didact really gone? He died in a comic right?
Probably, I think he was probably planned to come back in Halo 5 at one point but they learned that people thought he was boring as hell so they made Cortana the big bad instead.

He was still alive in the comic that leads into Halo 5, the one where he cracks Chiefs visor.

Your point kind of proves my point. You can easily argue that all Halo games were tropey and unoriginal. If Halo 5 is doing something consistent within in its own fiction, then w/e. "Trope" doesn't have to be a bad word and neither does "unoriginal."

I can't be bothered to care anymore. I know these are all your opinions and that's fine, but I have a hard time understanding the mentality.
