Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards 2015 dated for December 3rd.

Last year was a little rough around the edges, but a great improvement over major network-run events. Hopefully the pope has taken constructive criticism seriously and pulls off an even better night this year.

Geoff did an incredible job last year, so I am very excited for this year.

Just a few nicks here and there to fix, but leagues ahead of what came before it.

Watching /v/ react to Geoff's circus is always a treat, I look forward to the shit flinging that will come this year.

The show — called, simply, the Game Awards — is now the closest thing the games business has to its own Oscars.

No it isn't the only thing. The BAFTA game awards are probably the closest to that, especially since it is purely about the awards and the people involved. The Game Awards still retains much of the old VGA stuff - heavy on advertising, game reveals / trailers etc over the actual award winners at times.

Regardless, I'm still looking forward to it for what it is. Hopefully they can actually engage a bit more with the award winners than having several people awkwardly given an award off stage and pushed aside quickly.

I'm not a Geoff naysayer - I like the guy - but last year's show bored me to absolute tears, to the point where I had to bail once the announcer stated that they were only halfway through the show. Didn't help that it was 3 o'clock in the morning, but hey, I can watch E3 at ungodly hours of the day, so the fault didn't lie with me.

I hope he does better this time, although I'm not sure I'll bother watching it. At least maybe dial down a bit on the trailers of indie games that have blatantly only begun development a few days prior!

I'm not watching if Joel McHale doesn't co-host.

They had incredible chemistry.

Edit: crap, they changed the format the last year. I didn't even realize. What a bummer.

Agreed. Whilst I get the show being used for advertising, using the fact that people are watching for ads, to then explore actual gaming history - and parts of it that may be relatively obscure, as the history of Sierra was to me until last year - should definitely be a centrepiece. Its a nice way of encouraging some proper appreciation for people's hard work.

The weekend of game announcements

The Game Awards on the Friday and PlayStation Experience Saturday and Sunday.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
I guess Bioshock Collection will be announced there...what else? PSX and Game Awards aren't far way from each other

The show where only mainstream games win? I'll skip the GOTY part :p

I'll watch it for possible games related announcements.

How likely is it that Sony will save some of their PSX announcements for this show instead? Maybe God of War?
Very unlikely, first party game announcements like God of War will be saved for their conference IMO. They might show some new footage of an exclusive like they did with Bloodborne at last year's Game Awards though.

They can be a bit silly, but hey, it's couple hours of games-related entertainment on a weeknight. Potentially with some cool announcements.

I just hope Bloodborne gets its due!

I liked last years and this was a very great moment indeed.

It was certainly a step in the right direction to do it in this format. I'll be sure to check it out this year.

The BAFTA Games Awards are great, but surely they're are the closest thing the games business has to the BAFTAs rather than the Oscars.

Absolutely. This was far more interesting and important than the trailers and advertising fanfare

Kind of pedantic really. Might as well say the Oscars is closest to the Oscars. My point is simply that The Game Awards for games is not even close to what the Oscars is for film industry (as the OP quote suggests), while the BAFTA game awards are probably a lot closer to that

Did they have major announcements last year? I don't remember.

From wikipedia:

World premieres include Nintendo's Mario Maker, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. and The Legend of Zelda; Konami's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain; Electronic Arts' Battlefield Hardline; Sony Computer Entertainment's Bloodborne, Until Dawn and The Order: 1886; Square Enix's Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris; Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt; Sierra Entertainment's King's Quest, 505 Games' ADR1FT and Bandai Namco Games' Godzilla: The Game. Other premieres include Before, The Banner Saga 2, Tacoma, Human Element and No Man's Sky.[3]

Although a bunch of these were just new trailers and such, and not full game announcements.

Did I mention Zelda?

It's his baby. He invested heavily in it last year.

Yes, but I have absolutely no idea how he got to be so big as a game "journalist". He's nothing more than a PR-rep for the big publishers. the show has become nothing but a hype-machine.

As soon as it becomes completely independent and unbiased, i'll tune in.

The Industry Icon or whatever award is about the only award that could be considered worthwhile. Award ceremonies are completely pointless most of the time. I don't think anyone besides people with large egos actually give a damn about any awards they receive.

Won't lie, I only watch for trailers. The Ken and Roberta Williams thing was absolutely awesome though.

Never read any of the Final Hours, I see...
