Wow, this thread about nothing but speculation is longer than the TR OT. Well I'm loving the game, the two black sheep of the year AssCreed Syndicate and RotTR are neck and neck for my goty.

This isn't about the quality of the game, which was well received.

I don't get MS. Why spend all that money on exclusivity then send it out to die against one of the biggest action adventures of the generation?

And this is why you shouldn't try to alienate the market.
MS did the same thing with jrpgs last generation, and it ended up in disaster, it took the genre a lot of time to recover from that, and some devs never did

Games should stay where you KNOW they do better, if you give up on a platform, it should be after you're proven that it's not worth it to release it there because the audience isn't in that console (but this is even worse than that scenario lol)

With the last few games getting marketing push with Xbox and this being released first on Xbox I feel Tomb Raider is more synonymous with the Xbox brand than PS, and I grew up with the PS1. MS best bet is to keep at it and next time support TR ground up on the XB1. I feel cross gen is to blame for initial lacking sales.

You won't find many people agreeing with this including me. MS has tried extremely hard to associate themselves with the TR brand, but it hasn't really worked and this culmination of those efforts looks to be a failure. Cross-gen might be the weakest rationalization I have seen yet.

A bundle that is limited to one major retailer and not available in all markets?

-sigh-, I dunno, man. That's only if that percentage owns xbones in the first place though.

C'mon, I know better and I know that by now you have long known better. It was just the thing to perpetuate the zany numbers joke. The first reply to that post was gold, just as I expected it to.

When we get to the point someone mentions "family sharing" the thread has jumped the shark.

God I hate that defense. There's nothing stopping MS from doing family sharing with the way the Xbox one works now. It had absolutely nothing to do with they terrible policies they wanted to implement. It was just something they threw out there to try and fight against the bad press. The Xbox One is a much better console for dropping it's always online policy. Could you imagine just how badly it would have bombed if they didn't remove that policy?

I haven't played ROTR, but this year hasn't especially impressed me, so I'll probably give it my GOTY #1 ranking. It deserves the vote.

Wut?

I don't think many would agree with this and the TR fan base is largely on PS4

You said that with a straight face.. those 2 games over Bloodborne, Witcher 3, Metal Gear Solid 5, or Fallout 4? I know it's opinion but neither of those games are on the level..

I much prefer Tomb Raider over those 2 games. Just because those are bigger IPs doesn't automatically make them better.

Different people like different things, they did also clarify as "my [their] GOTY"... perhaps they didn't think that much of all the games you listed? Or prefer a different type of game.

Fwiw im not that far into TR yet, seems pretty good so far

I don't understand how you come to this conclusion. Is this rooting for the underdog? The game isn't an underdog. This is the fruit of poor planning and misguided ambitions.

It's fucking stupid how all the big games are always released in the same week.
Publishers are bad at their job; publishing games.
I honestly don't know what their purpose is any more.

The idea of a third party exclusive was much different then than it is now, the market has changed dramatically. There's a reason why they rarely exist anymore. Seriously when was the last time a big publisher made a single console-exclusive game that wasn't moneyhatted? I can only think of PC stuff like Anno or The Sims 4.

Moneyhats have always existed. The PS2 era was no different. However, much like that situation, Sony has wiggle room as the market leader. Thus, I doubt there is much "moneyhatting" on their end.

Game fell off Twitch and have not heard anybody even talk about a Tomb Raider since it launched, next NPD should be the most interesting one to end the year

Microsoft is the reason JRPGs aren't as big as they were in the PS2 era now eh?

Think I've heard it all

Japanese developers put titles on a console that did not have the audience for those titles. Many of these titles were released due to money hats. It severely damaged the jrpg market last gen. It is recovering this generation. It is what it is.

Sony also priced themselves out of creating a userbase for the genre when those titles were released.

Suddenly a sales thread becomes a Goty thread...?
I guess when you've got 5 times more page views than sales you drain the old sales talk well dry.

Disappointing sales for sure. It'll be interesting to see what US sales look like, but I'm not expecting it to break the top ten. Shame, but I'm definitely part of the problem. I'm waiting for the PC release.

It's about the whole holiday line up. Not a weekend sprint. But a q4 marathon. We will know if it worked in a month or two.

Nah, I don't buy it. Literally more than half of the mainline games have not released on an Xbox platform. Anniversary initially launched on PS2 and PC, and TR:DE sold far more on PS4.

Besides which, I expect S-E's experience with this deal has been so bad that they won't be accepting another exclusive deal for TR in the future, At least, certainly not with the Xbone.

I thought this game came out like a year ago. Heard nothing about it recently.

If you heard nothing about it until recently, why would you assume it came out a year ago? Why wouldn't you assume it just came out recently?

I, uh... what?!

I dunno, maybe? Depends on Boxing Day sales.

This year has been kind of a disappointment on every front.

Except Until Dawn.

Never mind, Until Dawn is my GOTY.

Okay, this makes up for your previous bonkers comment. High five o/*\o

I know it may amaze you to discover this, but different people have different tastes.

Alternatively, I'd argue it should be about the year-long marathon, not the Q4 sprint.

Good point hawk. Microsoft's focus on this specific two or three month window and their mockery of 'pre-season' is really dumb IMO and I find it a little distasteful.

Not sure how the reveal-DRM came into the thread. It's almost turning into a post-mortem Xbox One thread. Has people called time on it already?

Another one of Greenberg's pearl of wisdoms - which was actually a two-parter from a previous quote wherein he said more consoles are sold November&December than the rest of the year combined.

I once asked our recently departed strategist about this and this is what he said.

You know who said:
The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sold cumulative more than 4.63 million consoles to end users between January 2014 to October 2014. For the holiday season (November and December) the PS4 and Xbox One sold cumulative more than 4.43 million units.

Small wonder Kyle Bosman says Aaron Greenberg is full of baloney in this video

So, a game has to be on twitch to be successful now? lol. holy fuck. But funny thing is i've been on twitch a lot these last two weeks and it's been on there. And i just checked, it's on there right next to MGS at 5:58 in the morning eastern time.

This thread is fucking terrible.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Aaron Greenberg, to me, comes off as very incompetent and incapable of performing his duties. He is almost a badged fanboy based on his Twitter account.

Although I'm not one to make people jobless, I believe this guy needs to be replaced. I truly believe their release schedule and vision of seasons is flawed and this guy is the catalyst of this.

No I dont think that what he's saying. But if its not on Twitc its not that popular. And I agree.

But this game isnt succesfull at all right now. So im not sure why you feel the thread is terrible
