Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

ItsTheNew

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
You could but a PS4 for 200 bucks or a PS4.5 for 400 bucks. Sony win either way. They need more headroom for games, VR along with 4K support. We just aren't use to this in the console space, a shock but if they don't totally screw us over, it should be okay. I do wonder how much juice devs will get from consoles though and when they decide to not give a damn about pushing old models, maybe it doesn't matter as there is no secret to x86 power unlike last gen designs so going forward they'll not get the same leaps anyway with PS4 and Xbox One.

With vr being an uncertainty, Sony not interested in losing money in selling hardware, their competitors console being a lame duck/ technologically inferior, and the price of 4K capable gpus + all other internals being north of $400 : I'm not seeing it.

Also another thought:

Maybe the PS5 is the PS4.5 and Sony is going on a more future focused strategy than restarting from scratch every generation?

Think about how damn risky it is for these platform holders to trot out a new platform, with a new OS and development platform every 6 years?

That's incredibly risky. It's a damn crapshoot. Companies do not like those kinds of risk.

Just the last generations 3 generations we've had 3 lead changes across each platform holder.

Not only that, but it also affects their third party partners. They're incredibly invested in these platforms succeeding, but they never know what horse to bet on.

It's going to be interesting, essentially the consoles have become pc's and and the games will have a ps4/xbox one quality setting and a higher one for the new machines. For those without 4k tv's it shouldn't matter as that and the fps will probably be the only increase. But it will suck for those that don't have a 4K tv as the only jump probably be marginally better graphics and a locked 60fps/1080p. Times are a changing.

I don't know how to feel about this, in one sense, I kinda feel this is the future and something I could approve if it means fully backwards compatibility going forward.

But this is not the right way to do it, if this is the path, I want modular consoles, buying full new hardware every 3 years is not acceptable.

Is this even possible, budget wise? I have no idea if anyone has more powerful APUs that would work for this. They also basically said "fuck off" to Nvidia. IMO they should trash that shitty CPU before upgrading the GPU.

This could be the Zen/Polaris combo from AMD. Remember that Zen is vastly more faster and efficient than Jaguar. As for Polaris, they could possibly get tech that can run it to 1440p then upscale it to 4K

I really don't see why you wouldn't just buy a new gpu for your computer for the price of the new console instead of buying a new console iteration, wouldn't you get more out of that than buying a new console?

Sony started talking to developers FIVE years before PS4 came out.
The PS5 is closer then five years away.

oh my god, please tell me this is a rumor...No. 4K is twice the res of 1080p, but the overall pixel count comes to something close to 4,000. That's why it's called 4K

The pixel count is 8,294,400, which is 4x the number of pixels in 1080p

But I think it's called 4K because the horizontal resolution of the original standard was 4096 (although the UHD standard is 3840).

If this comes into fruition, I hope they have some kind of upgrade program. But my lil cynical side tells me that they won't.

Honestly, I really don't know what to feel of this, (if its true) I feel like I could save my 400 bucks and couldve dropped it on this. So I feel somewhat shitty about this and aint gonna through the hassle of getting another. But at same time my inner geek freak wants it.

I'm a conflicted dude.

Wow, this is unexpected. At least with MS I will have an option to not give a fuck about upgraded XB1 and stick with PC. But with majority of Sony 1st party games still tie to console, this makes me very worried. Hopefully they make forward compatibility all the way to the end of Generation.

The moment my ps4 cannot play ps4 games, I'm done with all this.

and I mean playing, not whacky 'Shadow of Mordor on ps360' stuff.

I don't believe they're releasing new hardware sooner than 2 years from now tho

No, just no. The only reason I prefer to by consoles is because they can last many years without having to upgrade. The games might not have the best possible graphics but they are playable and fun.

This thread should be closed. It's a rumour with no basis.

1. They're already pushing an expensive device this year on top of selling the console
2. One of the pros of that device is that every PS4 is the same
3. The PS4 is selling like hot cakes and they have no need to revise it

Phil said they're open to releasing a new hardware as an upgrade. If MS is doing that then surely Sony isn't going to stay still and do nothing.

...and that whole "upgradeed X1" conversation turned into a bloodbath so it will be interesting to see how the "pro-PS4" people here react to this...

For me, I would happily upgrade my PS4 or X1 if it meant solid frame rates with all the bells and whistles...

I wouldn't like it if it was yearly upgrades. If it is a one time thing mid gen then it may not be so bad. I said in the X1 thread I would be fine with a shorter cycle with full BC this gen. Yearly upgrades in the console space still makes little sense for either.

If this is like with PSP 2000 I don't mind it (better specs with better running games but every game has to work with the original model) but if this leads to exclusive games...eh. Could be also PS5 if the launch goes to 2018/2019.

Holy shit, this will be the shortest console generation in history. Xbonetwo and PS4k launching next year? Hope the NX doesn't come out this year with specs comparable to the PS4, and put Nintendo in the same position they were with the Wii U launch.

I doubt you will see new hardware until next year or later, the cost for a huge leap in performance is not even close to a $400 box.

If this is true then I expect a white one for free as a trade in. If not then Sony don't be daft. This is not good to fragment your user base

This is it, just like Xbox One will likely do, can Sony guarantee backwards and forwards compatibility like Microsoft will do with universal apps though?

Okay runaway thread... what year between now and ps5 does 4ktv adoption get so serious that sony needs to do this?

Pancake Mix

Copied someone else's pancake recipe
The Xbox lasted four years. Was the 360 a new console or a Xbox 1.5?

The original Xbox loss lead its entire life and was nowhere near as successful as the PS2, which is why I used the PS2 example. Only the Saturn to Dreamcast turnaround in Japan was that short on home console.

The 360 was certainly a generational leap, but it lasted 8 years instead. Why are we assuming a significantly short gen because of smaller losses and weaker hardware at launch? I'm just saying, we'll wait and see. Anytime from 2018-2021 would seem pretty normal, and a PS4k sounds like a PS5 regardless...like that's a huge resolution boost.

Huh well that's unexpected. I'm all for adding things to consoles outside of graphical updates but I would rather not have to upgrade my ps4 just so it can play games that are released in 2017.

If this is true, it looks like the PC + Nintendo master combo is where I'll be going soon.

If they rolled this into all new PS4's instead of a price cuts and sold some kind of addon for old PS4's I'd be down with that. Seems unlikely though.

Man I LOVE GAF when news (a rumor) like this surfaces.

Yeah, that fragmented user base on PC is killing it :( .

I love my PS4 and Xbox One. But I will jump on this idea stat. Wish they were both going software though so you could load PSN and Xbox live on a custom PC (or even future android/IOS devices).

I want the "One device" future so bad.

since this a similar topic to some recent Xbox threads I think it's important to state that Sony is killing the PlayStation brand. This is obviously their exit strategy.

Also, it is important to note that Devs are not capable of developing for multiple SKUs so this is incredibly anti-developer.

It was fun while it lasted. I hope Sony and MS devs find somewhere to develop for Mobile or Nintendo because those are our last best hope for this beautiful industry.

It's a shame that mismanagement at Sony and MS have brought us to the precipice.

Big difference Sony isn't tying their games to PC a PSN PC store. They also are not trying to push a new way of developing games across 2 platforms.

ANd honestly I don't think this is going to happen. AT least for Sony. I could be wrong. But it doesn't make sense in the position they are in.
