Did console generations just become much, much shorter?

The software generation? No... although I guess it depends on the details of how software is handled in this model. But I'm guessing games will still be playable on the original PS4, and so its software cycle will be at least the usual 5+ years.

The hardware generation? That may become a more blurred matter with multiple shorter cycles within one software cycle.

This honestly sounds terrible.
It wouldn't be so bad if "CPU increase" meant bringing PS3 BC on board - if they want to send a message Playstation is a platform rather than hardware - that would be an actual convincing argument for it, and would also give a real incentive for people to stick with the ecosystem.

Fuck you Microsoft?

I still don't get why Sony is the only one getting hate (or love). Both console owners are doing this. Both should be equally loved or hated.

Also,:

Fuck you WB
Fuck you Ed Boon

Yeah, that's pretty odd. Is it so hard to give the finger to the guy you believe in?

Also:

Fuck open world.
Fuck 3rd party timed exclusives.

Those who are upset enough to want to leave Sony may as well just leave the industry entirely because all platforms will be handled the same way.

Concerning remasters, when I look at it this way...

Instead of buying each game remastered for a new platform, we can buy the upgraded hardware and get a patch for select games to look better... (like it is on PC)... but without having to deal with a terrible OS and drivers shit...

Well, looking at it his way, PS4K doesn't sound too terrible.

Edit: Oh, Zoetis dropping info!
All I really need to know is, if there is any bonus to non-4K-users. I won't upgrade my freaking TV for some pixels I barely see, especially from a distance.

Honest question: why all those informations are considered reliable? :/ I have nothing against gaf community but basically he said to report what heard without provide any other concrete source. :/

After playing the FFXV demo, I would really like it if the resolution was finer and the frame rate was higher (at the very least stable 30fps). I have no qualms with the graphics/art, I just want higher resolution and better frame rate. I'm willing to shell out for a ps4k if my FFXV can improve on that.

Yea, it's just a demo and "doesn't reflect the final product", but I'm sure it's damn close.

More power is no guarantee of better framerates on consoles. The developers will likely continue to prioritize fidelity over performance. PC and adjustable settings is the only way to ensure you always have 60+ fps.

I guess I need to learn how to build a PC now

If I wanted to deal with yadda yadda yadda I would've etc etc from the get go

Here's hoping Nintendo doesn't do this too.

Usually, I only buy 1 console per generation...and it's almost always a Playstation. Currently, I own a PS4. I'm more likely to buy an XBOXONEPOINTFIVE than a PS4.5. Why? Well, why limit yourself to one set of games when you could have two sets? Could Sony be driving customers to Xbox with this move? Surely they have more customers to lose as the current sales leader?

Nope. We got a mid-generation upgrade. A new generation would mean the imminent death of the previous platform and new software for it. That won't happen here. The PS4 will keep getting games until the PS5 is released, the PS4K will just get better looking versions of them (probably).

Phil Spencer talked first about it but it's the PS4K we have more info right now. Can't hate something you don't know what really is.

If this thing is 499 and the VR bundle that includes the camera we know is also 499 then you're talking about 1000 dollars to get the full experience. My goodness.

That being said - given some outright falacies in the Op, I would treat this as any other unverified leak (not so much the existence of PS4k itself, but rather any details surrounding it).

Come on man we're talking about a more powerful console to run VR and normal games at a better performance. And you want PS3 BC?

If Sony releases a PS4 2.0 then the current PS4 must undergo a Slim operation, otherwise nobody will buy the current consoles anymore.

How do you know the old versions won't just get phased out and the new version becomes the de facto console? This is how it worked in the past. Drop price and clear inventory while introducing new version at old price.

Same here. If I have to deal with the yadda yadda then I may as well do it right and call myself master race (always liked the sound of that lol).

Again, I honestly think a ps4 @ double the power for $500 sounds a little hard to believe. On top of adoption rate being much lower, they will likely be eating it in every PS4K console sold. I think dedicating an extra power bump to PSVR is quite logical, because those who want VR are clearly marketable targets. Feature creeping into the general games stream is a different thing entirely. It is important to remember that none of this is gospel. What is Osiris' track record? (no disrespect OP)

Imagine devs who already do sloppy work on consoles like Ubisoft, Bethesda...

just imagine their PS4 versions if PS4K is out there...

This will be fucking savage.

True I guess. But I am just imagining the unfun of being someone who owns "just a ps4" who would not be getting performance downports of games.

I mean, the sometimes rocky or unstead 30 that we see...could now potentially get worse on a default ps4?

Hrm....

This whole PS4k thing is weird and seems really half baked. As just 2x GPU is actually not too much. Similarly, if the betterPU realises, that is also a huge ???? because then you have architectural differences moving from jaguar probably, or you have non-linear scaling, or you have to worry about 4 different ports just for the HD twins.

Yikes!

Exactly! More QA versions, and more side ports to specific console hardware? Just for a rather tepid performance increase at X price? I am just not seeing the appeal beyond getting a new and longer lasting gaming PC. Beyond the fear, that is, of your PS4 now being "obsolete" or let behind in port performance.

Looks more and more like this is a real thing. If this comes out and fucks over current PS4 owners I'm probably done with consoles.

Honest question: why all those informations are considered reliable? :/ I have nothing against gaf community but basically he said to report what heard something without provide any other concrete source. :/

The way this rumor started making it all plausible. It started at Sony's VR event where a lot of developers openly (but anonymously) talked to Kotaku about how Sony is making a new hardware to take advantage of VR. That dialogue changed from VR talk to PS4.5 talk, to PS4K talk. Eurogamer verified it independently. Wall street journal also independently verified it.

Then we have a lot of folks here who are in touch with developers, as friends or colleagues, and folks that are developers themselves. Whenever someone at GAF claims "I KNOW A SECRET! THE ANSWER IS BLUE!", Mods will generally contact the person making such claims and ask for the proof or credentials. Any false proof or credentials results in either a ban and/or discrediting the user's inside secrets and connections.

OsirisBlack is one of the few verified folks who know the right people willing to talk. In return, those folks get anonymity and folks like OsirisBlack can have a conversation with them about major rumors and dispel it or shine some further light at it. It's safe to say that this rumor is 95% true, with 5% hanging on the shoulders of Sony or Microsoft themselves on what the final specs and price and release window may be. It's predominant that the push for better games and better hardware and better experiences and more options is becoming a priority. Plus, there's always a race on who adapts the newer technology first. VR and 4K and open-platforms and cross-platforming is the buzz of 2016, and all these things require a more powerful hardware that is not outdated when it releases. Hardware is rapidly changing every year and it's not only the desire to stay relevant with the exponentially advancing tech market but also, in a way, of keeping the business afloat. It helps chip manufacturers and game manufacturers to think outside the box and not be constraint by the device their idea is about to be flourished in.

I never expected everyone to be so doom and gloom about this.

I'm not to worried about this news. I have a powerful PC that PS4k probably won't match. Most are thinking the PS4k is the equivalent of a 970, right? Guess what? I still prefer my PS4 over my PC gaming rig, which is even less powerful. PC's have been more powerful than the PS4 for a long time now, and that has never been a big issue for PS4 owners. When you look at Digital Foundry articles, PC game changes are mostly about higher framerate and higher AA and such. So we get a PS4k that matches a PC high or ultra setting, so what? If 30fps vs 60fps bothered you that much you woulnd't be playing on a PS4 anyway. It has never bothered me. And if it doesn't bother me now, it won't bother me with a PS4k. As long as the PS4 is supported with good solid games and performance i am ok with it. But if we are talking Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor PS3 -> PS4 difference... then we'll have something to worry about. It will be all about the quality of the PS4 versions when PS4k arrives. And that will probably be somewhere in PS4's 3rd year probably? Orig. Xbox was replaced by the 360 in 4 years. Again, not that bad.

Buti'll still get a PS4k though, day one. ;D

My biggest fear as well.

Though I keep being told I'm a numpty and both PS4's have the same architecture etc so it's not an issue really.
Some devs though... I just don't trust with this new scenario lol

Isn't it more likely that they just won't have optimised for the 4K and thus you get minimal benefit for the extra power - just like PS4 v XBO.

Lol, this is... Yeah i have no words, i have a PC but bought the PS4 because of the ease of use. I don't need this, i can do 4k on my PC.
Yes, i know this isn't a forced thing. But i was planning on keeping my PS4 for years before upgrading to a PS5, not having a mid update.
I'll see how this turns out, would suck if this meant that the 'old' PS4 would suffer allot because of this. What about the fps in multiplayer games?
So many questions.

Yeah, because new computer parts are only released every 10 years or so.

This thread....

And BTW, Nintendo started this.

Sounds like an attempt to:

shorten gap between models and stagger adoption
use backwards compatible games with reduced settings as a band aid to existing install base
use key big titles as lure to move

Not sure I'm in for this and I'm not touching PSVR now until I know for sure what's going on here and whether it would be better to wait for the new model and a possible reworked VR for that.

Nintendo was the first one to do this with the new 3DS

Yeah but I didn't really care about the Xenoblade port or Hyrule Warriors which are the only games that seems to apply to

Although I guess there's a chance I might not care about God of War 4 and whatever shenanigans are hypothetically being prepared to push this silly bollocks. But that's assuming that third parties don't also jump on the software bumpgrade bandwagon.

I wouldn't care about this at all if it was as simple as "Well the graphics aren't as nice on this version" but the second it affects something as crucial as framerate, I get real shirty about it

Destiny at 60fps on PS4 and 30fps on PS4. Same for The Division...assuming they go for the higher end CPU.

It makes plenty of sense if you care about performance.
If one really does care about performance and being more up to date about it, shouldn't this one not rather be on the PC gaming side?

For me, one of the benefits of consoles, moderate updates within reasonable timeframes and more affordable pricing, is really compromised with this.

Now if intial pricing of the hardware would be lower, and prices of updates hardware would be too, it wouldn't be that much of a tricky thing.
