Rumor: Zelda coming to both Wii U + NX, choose between male/female link, VA for NPCs

Who would you like to be the female character option in Zelda U?

I don't expect female Link to look any different from male Link. With how androgynous Zelda U Link is looking, the differences will probably be minimal. Which is fine.

I also expect the voice-acting to be optional, which is also perfectly fine. Probably for the better, even.

If Nintendo does go ahead and do voice acting, what kind of people do you think they'll cast? Troy Baker, Nolan North, Chris Sabat, Johnny Young Bosh, Jennifer Hale, Wendy Lee?
Danny DeVito?
Or do you think they'll cheap out and just go with Treehouse staff or something?

The last time a Nintendo game was voiced by Treehouse staff was Tetris Attack.

Nintendo have been hiring actual voice actors since Star Fox 64, and Californian animation actors since Kid Icarus: Uprising. Pretty sure they know better than to cheap out.

Most likely this will either be Californian animation actors (expect a cast similar to Kid Icarus or Codename STEAM) or done in London (like Xenoblade). And Japanese too of course.

Really like rumor 1 and 3, don't think Link should talk. I think my position on 2 has been heard enough, and hopefully, not female Link.

Interesting choices if true though, risky for the VA, hopefully it works well.

Really? I'm pretty picky regarding "anime dub"-type stuff but X was better than most of the other stuff out there. Compared to a lot of the other JRPGs dubbed last year, it was the only one that actually left an impression on me.

I've heard lots of terrible voice acting and X was waaaaaay above terrible.

It was the writing more than the voice acting, sure. But Elma was the main character and she was awful. It wasn't up to par with the likes of Naughty Dog or Rockstar voice acting, it still felt like stilted anime / JPRG delivery in most cases. Maybe I was too harsh with 'horrible' but I didn't like it.

The original Xenoblade had some fantastic acting.

I'm going to call bs on the male/female Link for now. That's something I have to see for me to believe. Shit, I'm even iffy on the series having voice acting lol. All of it feels too radical.

The only thing I'll swallow is the NX port which is kind of a bummer in that I'm going to feel like the game was compromised in some way like TP was.

This rumour is NOT true, even though I want it to be so badly.

It's just too convenient that the rumour addresses things Zelda fans were discussing the past year or so.

It feels like a GAF -> Internet -> GAF thing

See, I don't agree with this. In the 2D games? Sure. In the 3D ones from Wind Waker on? Not at all. WW link, TP link and SS link were characters in a specific plot. They were very weakly sketched characters, but they were there. You couldn't self insert as them if you wanted to, imo. And many of us want them to become more fully sketched as characters, not less so. Having a full story operate around a blank slate is lame as hell.

You and most of the people playing here probably fell in love with the series when Link was little more than a blank slate whose major interactions with NPCs was probably smashing the pots in their homes. Comon my dude, the bulk of Link's interactions are just a facial reaction to something a character says. The specter of a meaningful interaction. It's not that big of a deal, yall are still going to go all in on the game whether Link is a person or suddenly turned into a duck. Hell we'd probably get less on an uproar if he was turned into an animal again instead of a woman.

This sounds like it could easily be more bullshit rumors, but still. The shroud of the hype has fallen.

I'd just let Troy Baker voice EVERYONE.

It would work.

You know, Zelda, we really are the Link to the Past.

I hope the voice acting is more Kid Icarus Uprising than Pokken Tournament.

I also would like a toogle option to have them talk in Hylian gibberish.

Yeah, Elma was pretty stiff, but ultimately she's kind of stiff a lot of the time as a character anyway. There's only so much you can do when a lot of the time you're just playing strict commander.

Other roles like Lin and L were great, I thought.

I hope the voice acting is more Kid Icarus Uprising than Pokken Tournament.

Ha, I forgot about Pokken. That was a pretty cheap one. The English VO was recorded by English-speakers/American actors in Japan for that one. I guess that was to save money and avoid creating another localization excursion in the US or wherever. It would've been done at the same time the Japanese tracks were recorded, I'd guess.

Agree on second bit. Klonoa did it, it worked great.

Rumour #1 - NX: This was already leaked and is pretty much confirmed at this point.+

Rumour #2 - VA: This is pretty damn likely at this point. It's 2016, Nintendo can't get away with no VA in a game of this budget any more. On top of that, the whole "breaking conventions" thing is the perfect excuse to make the leap. But then again, I thought for sure SS would have VA back in 2011 and we all know how that turned out so really it could go either way.

Rumour #3 - Gender choice: Would be nice, but doesn't sound like something the Zelda team would do. Then again, with the combination of the E314 misunderstanding, Triforce Heroes backlash, Linkle and breaking conventions maybe the team could decide to go this route.

On the whole, taking this rumour with a massive grain of salt. It just sounds like something that's too easy to fake. It literally just reads like a list of "top 3 fan desires". I'll be happy to be proven wrong but I'm not holding my breath.

Really hope the VA part is true. Time for Zelda's narrative to catch up to the other big names.

I say that as a huge Zelda fan. Text and grunts alone just don't cut it anymore.

It's just too convenient that the rumour addresses things Zelda fans were discussing the past year or so.

It feels like a GAF -> Internet -> GAF thing

You could have said the same thing about Paper Mario Wii U and Mother 3 being released internationally yet here we are.

you know just saying it isn't true doesn't make it false. Multiple people were saying there were rumors floating around from the same source as the Paper Mario leak.

I know this is a little OT, but didn't she also say mother 3 was getting a localization in april (on the 10th I think)? What ever happened to that?

But the bolded is the whole point - this is what the series needs to move away from if they're going to continue to try and tell a meaningful story in 3D space with voice acting. The fact that they might be moving towards 'create a character' with Link remaining mute - that's not what I want to see.

I want to see no gender option and Link as a girl. If only to see the reactions as fanboys struggle with "established" characters and lore.

Gonna call bullshit on everything but the Wii U/NX release.

Twilight Princess did it so it makes sense.

If VO makes it into Zelda, I'd hope that it's optional, but I doubt it seeing as how it's quite the investment. I'm just afraid that bad VO will ruin the experience.

It says female "character" so I hope it's Link or an original character and not a lazy gender swap. And the voice acting should be Hylian with subtitles. I can't imagine Zelda with English voice acting.

This is what I noticed as well. Specifically mentioning female "character" seems to imply it isn't Link.

Which makes sense because Link is an established, well known character with a long history.

Agreed. I don't care if everyone else talks, don't need link to talk. Mario and sonic started talking and you couldn't pay them to be quiet for 5 minutes now

Hmm? Mario talks as much as Link does.

All three of those sound interesting. Link was already looked androgynous so I would expect that the changes would be minimal. VA for NPCs is interesting. I wouldn't call the lack of voice acting a defining trait of the series so it's not that big of a change. As long as Link isn't voiced as it says then I'm interested in it.

I don't see why. The two most popular big-name Western-style fantasy RPGs today are The Elder Scrolls and FromSoftware's games, both of which have silent protagonists.

Again, she needs to clarify if by choosing between male and female playable character she means link and someone else (Zelda?) Or a toggle at the beginning pokemon style.

Or maybe she just doesnt know, she could say too.

Im hoping for playable zelda, more content instead of just changing the model and dumbing down even more link's characterization.

Rumour: Features in new Zelda that people have made topics about wanting.
Nintendo EAD do listen but they're also pretty tone-deaf as well.

Also yesssssss Voice Acting!

Female Link wouldn't affect me, since I'll just play as male anyways. Good option for female players I guess.

That makes too much sense. I'd much rather just change the gender of an established character for no reason at all xD

Female Kratos must be an option or boycott!

I think it's for equal female representation.
I'm sure some people would be fine with playing as zelda but having this option makes the statement that anyone can be the hero. Making it zelda just seems disingenuous to me.

Linkle was added to Hyrule Warriors Legends after the super positive feedback from the concept in the art book. How is it outlandish to think that could have influenced Aonuma and his team as well?

Good, about time, let the GGers cry and whine. A female option was long overdue. The male option will still be there, so anyone who refuses to buy the game solely because of a feature they won't ever have to use is just being a big baby.

I'll be getting the Wii U version because my Wii U library wouldn't feel complete without the titular Zelda title of the console. If the NX version is playable on the handheld then I'll get that eventually someday too.

Also, please keep romance out of this series. It was never a big thing in past games. At most it was some NPCs flirting with Link in a completely one-sided manner, with Link noticeably uncomfortable whenever it happened to him in OoT for example. Only exception has been Skyward Sword really, and that game is the last game they should be taking inspiration from.

I see Lady Link as basically being Nausicaa, especially considering the Zelda U Link design so far. Given that, yes please. Nausicaa Link would be best Link.
