Horizon Zero Dawn - Aloy's Journey Trailer, delayed to February 28th, 2017

The game looks awesome, but given Aloy's line of "either help or get out of my way" it looks like GG is keeping their tradition of making their characters obnoxious jerks. Hopefully, that was just included for dramatic effect.

Don't get me wrong, I expect the game to be fun and set a new standard for graphics. I even enjoyed most of Shadowfall. But GG doesn't know how to write a good story or make interesting protagonists. I'll be happy if they prove me wrong with this game though.

Guerilla hired the writer of Fallout: New Vegas for this game. New Vegas had a good story (at least that's what I heard of).

But that would require them to show several linked scenes and would give us far too much of the narrative. A narrative is a sequence of linked events that move the story forward, broaden the story, deepen our understanding of the characters or show how those events change the characters. All they can do is give us teases and show us the quality of cloth the narrative is woven from. I don't want to know more. I didn't want to know more about NMS either.

Not really, plenty of trailers do a great job of setting up the narrative or at least atmosphere without giving too much away.

I'm pretty sure New Vegas or any CRPG like Fallout never had a single writer. Next, Fallout New Vegas' story structure was more defined around the groups, it was more like a web of stories rather than a set path which is what Horizon appears to be going in.

Horizon's vision of the Post apocalyptic is also seemingly different from Fallout as well and the setting could put off the writer.

Different writers have different skill sets. This one might not be the one for this story.

That, I can agree with. I thought this trailer did a great job of that though. I thought the atmosphere was palpable in a lot of those scenes.

I think none of the action shots really conveyed anything that gameplay could not cover, but the scene of the bird landing on the robo rex? Beautiful, it felt like organic nature even among this new technological reformation, never left and was in fact harmonious. Those are the scenes and stories are what I would want from a world like this one. I want it to ask whether AI could be harmonious with nature.

The Trailer looks great, the environments are very reminiscent of Enslaved (loved that game). I'm glad I put this game in the back of my mind. I would have been dissapointed with the delay otherwise. I don't mind too much, but has it become impossible to release a game on time anymore? Or should I say impossible to set a realistic release date. It's getting kind of annoying.

Probably has already been answered, but do we have any kind of information whether this trailer was real time cutscene, or real time gameplay (the relevant sections) and where this was running, PS4 or NEO?

Because i look at this gif, and I simply cant believe that this is supposed to be open world real time gameplay graphics on PS4:

Yes, there's lots of scope for interesting subtext. The ecosystem appears to be the same as it's always been, regardless of the mechanised nature of the creatures. I think that will possibly be explored too, based in the interaction between Aloy and the mechanised scout in the first trailer we saw.

No confirmation but probably best to assume it's running on Neo.

Man it looks unreal, but I cant feel but a bit disappointed if they are going to be showing the Neo version and have the entire PS4 user base in a guessing game of how this runs on PS4.

Not saying this couldn't possibly run on a regular PS4, but from this point on I think it'd be safest to assume any footage of a Sony exclusive we see is running on a Neo unless it's explicitly stated otherwise.

Delsin in ISS was around 120k polygons in an open wolrd game with thousands of effects and particles with framerates around 30-45. I don't see why this isn't possible now with the new unlocked CPU and surely more unlocked memory and improved SDK and techs.
Keep in mind that one of the most impressive features of the game is its realistic cloud tech where the game has every type of clouds in different sky distances which cumulate according to weather and only the dense ones in low temperatues can cause rain and heavier rain to drop. The weather and day/night system of this game will be very immersive and can affect gameplay.

Is there any more info on the weather system? You can create clouds with basic perlin noise which is not terribly computationally expensive, but it really looks like GG spent their time on algorithimic simulation the flocks and herds the bahvoirs etc.

This is silly.

People would have been saying the same thing if it was rumored before UC4.

To be fair, we don't have confirmation which version it's running on. But if you want to avoid being disappointed, I think you should assume this is Neo footage. That way, if this does turn out to be PS4 footage, you can be even more amazed. I don't think the difference in visual fidelity will be very significant between the two anyway. The biggest difference is probably greater draw distance of shadows and vegetation in the Neo version.

This how it's going to be from now on. Another reason to hope the Neo experiment blows up in Sony's face.

Anyway, trailer looked fantastic, here's hoping it doesn't conflict too much with Zelda NX (or hoping it does, because otherwise NX releases in fall?).

It didn't. Throwaway revenge story with poor main character motivation and cardboard factions. It gave lots of opportunities for player choice though and reacted well to it, but I'm not sure Horizon is that kind of game.

They aren't going to show things running on an unannounced console.

They might just play a shortened version of his trailer on stage before going into a demo on Neo.

I agree with Javin. Expect Neo and be plesantly surprised if PS4.

The biggest difference will probably be IQ between the two I'd think.

I won't be disappointed either way because I will have a Neo. :) I hope this is the base PS4 game(and it probably is) because means the Neo will be even better.

Im really hyped for this, its the only game I am hyped for actually.

I hope it has some Monster Hunter-esque vibe when hunting legendary beasts. Shame about the delay but better to release a solid product.

So is her bow the only weapon she has? Ive seen the various attachments for the bow, just wondered if i'd missed some other combat details.

So we're already saying the PS4 isn't powerful enough to run this well and the footage is on the Neo. I know exactly who will run with this on Youtube.

For me, it's running on the PS4. UC4 was open enough and Guerilla are talented enough to do this.

Honestly, I can see it going either way. This trailer could just be general improvements in visual fidelity over the E3 demo last year. On the other hand, it could also be an early build running on the Neo with just some LOD improvements to shadows and foliage. On top of improved AA, probably. Currently, I'm making myself think it's the latter so I will be pleasantly surprised if it's the former.

Well, yes, we can think this too. In any case, if this is the base version, we can be even more impressed.

Voice acting was kind of awful, also that line with "get out of the way"... Really?

'Crumbling ruins' clearly slipped an edit. 'Ruins' or 'crumbling buildings' but not both. A really basic mistake. I know it's dialogue and dialogue can break all the usual rules but this is a voice over and so should be polished.

'You can help or get out of my way' is a perfectly fine though.

Now if.... IF... this is PS4 footage... there is some serious magic involved...

On another note, I really want this game to be good. GG are taking a huge bold step into a completely different genre here and I really want them to do good, so they continue making such bold moves in the future. From the scope of a game like Killzone to this, is mindboggling.

Funny how everything is NEO now and the normal PS4 doesn't exist anymore. We do all forgot games like Shadow Fall, Uncharted, Infamous, DriveClub.

We will know in a week for sure. I would be shocked if this isn't base PS4 footage. After Uncharted 4 it seems like people are right to underestimating what the PS4 can do. First-party Sony studios generally make most multiplats look like crap in comparison and this will probably continue that trend.

That part seems to lead a seamless transition between cutscene and gameplay just like the previous gameplay demos. This is becoming a common trend for Sony AAA games from The Order 1886 to Uncharted 4 and now Horizon.

I don't think this is Neo version since it has many shadowing artefacts. Considering Neo will be equipped with a RX 480, such inconsistencies will disappear with it if it was running on it.

I have the same exact thought process. We already saw the gaming running on PS4 a year ago. And a years plenty of time to make improvements to the build.

Well, it's not out of the realm of possibility that this is indeed PS4 footage. I actually think Uncharted 4 still has a slight edge in visual fidelity, but Horizon is definitely the more technically impressive game. It's hard to say definitively which version this is because the improvements in draw distance and image quality are significant. It could definitely just be optimizations from the demo last year, though. A year is plenty of time for optimizations.

Oh, goddamn it! Why do we always think alike? Look at my post and what I wrote. :p

This is totally possible on PS4 I think. If you look at other clips there's some pretty obvious pop-in. And the draw distance isn't that far once you get past the robot dino in front of Aloy.

I figured the same thing, but then I also wasn't expecting an E3 trailer for Horizon to come out before E3. I imagined Sony would announce the Neo at their E3 show, and from that point on every trailer we see will be running on the Neo, but then this happened. I think it's more likely that this is the Horizon E3 trailer, running on a Neo, than the idea that they'll have another trailer for next week that'll look even better than this.

I mean, there's always the chance they won't announce the Neo at E3 and I'm completely wrong, of course.

Image for image yes, UC4 does look a bit better maybe. But Horizon is a huge open world game and yes UC is kinda open but not that open.

I dont know, I wish this is PS4 but it is way, way too clean to be...
