Nintendo NX rumored to use Nvidia's Pascal GPU architecture

On the one hand, it sounds plausible, and it's the most sensible thing for Nintendo to do with regards to performance and power consumption. On the other, Nintendo making a console with such bleeding-edge hardware just seems inherently implausible!

Awesome find! Reminds me of my days in private school where we would hook up a few OG Xbox consoles to play 16 player Halo.

On a less serious note: Nvidia in NX means Gamecube Virtual Console confirmed!

Here is the problem. Given everything of Nintendo's history, what is more likely:

1. Nintendo uses a 2 year old, released CPU/GPU system that has already got an Android port and sufficient yields to pump out millions of units in a few months (Tegra X1, Maxwell based). The X1 is also basically unused by anyone in the industry (only NVidia Shield) and will probably be super cheap to aquire.

2. Nintendo is going to use an unreleased, un taped out, never used by anyone else, new system (Tegra X2) that no one has any experience with, for a system that is supposed to release in 6-8 months. X2 is based on Pascal but has not even started final manufacturing processes.

Its really, really, really hard to believe any rumors that suggest #2 is true. Yeah, sure, maybe NVIdia has had a secret project to make an X2 based on Pascal specifically for Nintendo and its been a super tight secret. In an industry where every GPU tweak and leak occurs months in advance.

I mean, I get what you're saying, but this is hardly the only reason to believe this is the case, and even the eurogamer leaks pointed out that some aspects of the dev kits wouldn't make sense if they were really going with X1 and not a new chip

This is very promising. Still curious about actual specs, but I'm assuming this means much better battery life and a sleeker design are now possible with a more efficient architecture.

that speculation has been intense in the last 3 weeks.... take that as you will. Like I said next two months and this platform gonna be mighty fine time to pay attention.

TFLops aren't the only way of measuring power. Architecture says an incredible amount if one is taking the rumor seriously especially considering what GC to WiiU is using is well below anything nvidia has done since the fermi architecture. Pascal is 2 gens ahead and the IPC/Power gains are among some of the best we have seen in 20 years.

I promised myself not to be optimistic about NX. But times like this I'm kinda tented to be.

Nate is legit on these things. Not saying this as a reference to myself, but so are others. Let things come together nintendo is pulling at people right now and I think they are liking what they see.

I shat on when I leaked certain cpu details I wasn't suppose to. It's a lot better than initial concept, I know it doesn't please everyone but nintendo is actively wanting this machine to be solid and that reminds me of when they built n64 or gc vs the last two machines.

At the end of the day... NX will use just few watts. It will be great as a mobile device, but it will not be in the performance range of currentgen consoles.

Not true it will be closer than WiiU ever was. Nintendo would have to go back from WiiU to make your statement true.

I suspect this will run a higher clock speed when docked for 1080p and the handhelds resolution when not to save power.

Geeze and people were expecting the 3DS' successor to be just around Vita level. I was expecting roughly equivalent to Wii U ala 3DS to Wii but it might just blow it away.

As someone who primarily games on portables the hype is getting way too real.

I'm wondering now if this tablet could feed to the tv without the dock. I'm hoping they use some
Kind of wireless solution.

Most likely. Though the real question is if it'll run at a high enough clock speed to compare to the x86 Twins. I mean, I get that it's like comparing apples & oranges since both use different architectures, but I'm mainly talking about visual fidelity.

This thread hahahah.
I'm expecting something closer to PS4, make it happen Ninty, pretty please :)

Even if the CPU (feasible considering the PS4 CPU is probably its easy weakpoint) and the GPU(pretty unlikely) come close to the PS4, there's no way the system will get close in terms of RAM. I suggest holding back expectations in that regard.

However, it would not be an unreasonable expectation with this news to see this as the strongest dedicated handheld ever made. Not too shabby.

Sounds good. Looks like they're future proofing it as much as they can.

Man, the day the NX gets announced it's going to be so crazy here on GAF. It's going to be fun.

Very interesting...

Is this chip really as powerful as the PS4?

We don't know that. We just know whatever it is it's based on Tegra and it's more modern and efficient than the Tegra X1 which at full capacity was twice as powerful as Wii U.

I don't think we'll be seeing AAA PS4/XBO on a handheld but some less intensive games might be possible.

In theory, the dock could have additional RAM & GPU power.

Which cpu details, i've missed that?

I still find a bit weird about every leaks are almost about hybrid or the power of the device.
Nobody talks or know what's new to the system, like the heartrate or does it have scrollingwheels or other thing that they want to keep secret?

Then we're talking a higher price point. It's not happening with the initial release or the base system. I'm already expecting a New 3DS type treatement for most games on the Scorpio and Neo and the same will be here if that comes to be.
