No Man's Sky has the 5th largest peak player count on Steam (by game) since 2012

I'm kind of surprised people think this kind of game would be refunded in the first place.

It's not like there isn't a vast history of PC gamers buying survival titles with mixed (or even actively bad) receptions by the millions.

DayZ: 3,439,433
Rust: 4,157,884
7 Days To Die: 1,541,487
Don't Starve Together: 4,637,945 (It has a better reception these days, but took off at launch when it received especially onerous reviews.)
ARK: Survival Evolved: 3,561,307
H1Z1: 2,472,741
The Forest: 2,169,353

This list certainly isn't exhaustive.
Rust has an extremely high refund rate though, and I imagine most of the other games on that list are similar.

It's like people have never seen a high profile PC game launch before. I've lost count of the number of games that were unplayable for many people at launch, fixed the issues, and ended up selling millions.

It's probably not helping them any that the game is CPU-intensive, not GPU-intensive so a lot of gamers who have focused on getting the best GPU but ignored their CPU are most likely going to be disappointed with performance, even after the game gets patched.

I get the impression from the performance thread that the CPU usage isn't even properly parallelized, but I don't have the game so I can't confirm.

The fact that this game is going to be a huge success despite manufactured outrage is going to really bother a vocal group here... and I love it!

Glad it's selling well , despite some shortcomings you can see the love they have put into exploring a galaxy .

Now they have some money I hope we see lots of great patches and updates .

They'll still make a fortune but it may also be the most refunded game on steam judging by the user reviews

Game locks my PC up so I will regrettably have to get a refund if its not fixed within the refund window

That's surprising and disappointing.

Indeed they are!

Those figures are very impressive! People wondering why No Man's Sky is causing so much discussion need to look no further than this sales information. I think it's safe to say the PlayStation 4 SKU outsold the Steam SKU by a healthy margin.

And it will top the most refunded chart too!

That's a lot of crashes to the desktop.

And this happens with every hyped game. The Division was high on the charts too and look where it is now.

It's pretty interesting that the game has still succeeded, given the "controversy".

I'll probably pick it up sometime next year, these types of games need time to mature out in the open before they really live up to the promise. I learned that lesson as an early adopter of Elite Dangerous.

I am so happy to see this game sell well, I have been enjoying it since Tuesday, heck I just managed to turn it off right now after a 3 hour session. It's 4am and I'll be paying for it tomorrow, but I just cannot make myself stop.
Definitely my GOTY so far.
Will be very interesting to see on Monday how it sold in the UK on PS4, first place is guaranteed.

I really bounced off NMS quickly in a way that I have with few games before. Doesn't hwlp that my PC seems to run the game at an absurdly low frame rate. Might come back to it in a few weeks a D a few patches.

Subnautica has some bad hitching issues too when it's loading data. PC. home of the jank!

Why extremely high? What are some other examples? There are some other examples in that tweet string but they're all very small sellers in the first place. Would love to see some numbers for larger games.

Friday night isn't exactly a big gaming time & it's 2:00 am in the UK right now.
Wasn't it released at 10am PST? It looks like it rose in the first two hours, then headed down.

Edit: I can't comment on the quality of the game as I have not played it (I got my refund last night), but I just noticed I have 6 friends who currently own the game. On Monday (or maybe Tuesday, I forget) I had 13 friends who owned it. I don't think I've ever seen that before for a game. Be interested in seeing the refund stats.

Shows how effective the Steam user review system is

What the hell is wrong with you? Jumping out of the blue to criticize Nms, has Sean killed your mom?

There isnt enough space on the internet to explain whats wrong with me.

Game locks up my PC so...its the worst game I ever bought. Not sure what else to say.

Sean knew the game sucked on PC and released it anyway to make the $$$. Shame on him.
