Suicide Squad's box office business plunges just like Batman v Superman's did

I think it is really bizarre and unfortunate just how bad the DCEU movies have been. The weird thing is, the people doing the marketing seem to understand what the audience wants, but the editors, directors and writers don't.

This is the core of the problem. People talk about executives meddling with Ayer and Snyder's visions (and they're justified in doing so) but the bigger issue seems to be that Warner and their film-makers are not on the same page at the start of production and then they have to cut everything down and re-edit it.

If the executives had had a clue they would have worked out early on that Batman v Superman did not need to be three hours long (it barely warranted being two-and-a-half hours long, frankly), and that they were going to alienate the child audience they needed to make the film profitable; or that Ayer's vision for Suicide Squad was too dark for the PG-13 blockbuster they wanted, a problem which was compounded by the decision to hire a marketing team who were not on the same page as the director to cut the trailers and then for some bizarre reason hiring them to help re-edit the film.

It's very simple to boil it down to "producers versus directors" but it's more that the two need to work in harmony. Directors on their own have plenty of terrible ideas. Warner keep hiring directors, letting them shoot a film, then realising that they're not going to work out. Much like with Thor 2, another film where this happened, the results are never going to be above "alright".

To be fair, pretty much everything falls off big after its opening week, including the movie Suicide Squad beat for the August premiere record, Guardians of the Galaxy, which whose decline from opening Friday to second was 67.5 percent.

So this huge drop off in box office performance is actually pretty close to normal.

Well I never seen this coming... Oh wait.

All the people shouting 'fuck the critics' when the first week box office was strong off the admittedly good advertising. Very premature, it's reviews and word of mouth that tanks these things.

I'm curious in what ways this'll cause WB execs to go panic mode and interfere with Wonder Woman? People complained about the lack of Leto's Joker? Give him 39 minutes of screen time in Wonder Woman.

Patty says this is a good thing. SS was great. I mean GREAT!!

and this piece of crap is outpacing guardians by almost 50 million domestic in the same time frame. but some people will downplay that by saying of course it should be since the joker is in it or some shit.

lets face it, despite the shite reviews this movie can't not be called a success at the moment. unless it just plummets off a cliff very soon.

edit: nv/m about that former sentence. that huge gap is mostly because of opening weekend difference lmao.

Second week drops are normal. 40-60% second week drops are considered normal but 60% drops is on the extreme side and can indicate weak future viewing. 80% is very bad.

Probably one of my biggest movie disappointments since Matrix or Star Wars sequels.

So I don't mind that at all. Still regret giving this movie my money.

If that was current DC, that whole room would be dark because that means it's dark. I hate the way BvS looks.

This Current DC fella isn't the DoP on the three connected films, though. And that crummy tumblr gif has the contrast blown out. Disservice to how gorgeous The Dark Knight actually looks.

Pfister aint been doing shit since Transcendence. I think WB should throw him on one of these projects since Nolan doesn't want him anymore. Dude did great work on the batman trilogy and inception.

Fong did good for BvS though. Looks much better than Man of Steel and SS.

I think this thread is about Friday-to-Friday drops, not weekend drops.

Ah, gotcha, misread what he meant. Still, I'm willing to bet this weekend drop will be substantially larger than Civil War's. DC's movies have no legs at all. At some point they really need to make something that someone will tell their friends to go see.

Bad word of mouth at work, I only know a few people that actually like/love it and they're all on Gaf... all my relatives/co-workers pretty much hate it or think it was a mess.

Someone needs to go to the first threads when the movie just got released and sold pretty well, and quote everyone that said it'll hit 800 mil and break records etc, and make a giant wall of shame.

Didnt civil war drop 74 percent

Im convinced you guys are complaining about normality

This thing is going to drop even further next week, its once thing to have huge drops like this its another if it doesn't have long legs or repeated viewings.

Basically Civil War had a 74% Friday-to-Friday drop, but only a 59% Weekend-to-Weekend drop.

In comparison, BvS had an 81% F-F, and a 69% W-W.

I'm having a hard time putting it into words without it sounding confusing, but basically Civil War's 2nd Friday was not quite as representative of it's second weekend performance overall as BvS's was, although in both cases the second Friday suffered much more than the Weekend did.

Had to search what Wally's been up to. My man is directing The Tick TV movie.

Yay, and then the cycle of "it's a bomb" "Thor 2 is shit" "executive meddling is bad" "APU full of executive meddling" "reboot pls" can go on and on for fifty more pages.

Like the fact there's people calling for a reboot after an SS film has made 300 million plus in less than two weeks is genuinely amazing.

Does DC even have the same reach as Marvel? All I remember of DC as a kid was Batman and Superman. Batman being the most popular of all superhero across Marvel/DC.

I know the movies are bad, but for me, DC character never had the same draw apart from the 2 mentioned. I can name and get excited with lots of Marvel characters though, much of this is to do with awesome cartoons as a kid.
