PS4 Pro Won't Support 4k BluRay

If they confirm that they can patch it in later, I have no problem with this not being in at launch, so long as it's guaranteed that they will eventually make it a feature, but if for a hardware reason they've fucked this up... GG. Considering that Blu-ray is Sony's thing (unless I'm mistaken?), this is seriously disappointing. I do think focusing on the games is important, and I'm glad that they didn't start off trying to make the PS4 like Microsoft originally tried to make the Xbox One the all-in-one media console, but they should also, now that the console is already out, be working on making their console also great for that as well.

I truly believe this is okay myself. For people freaking out, go look for UHD movies on Amazon. I have since I picked up the One S. It is slim pickings right now as far as titles that support it. I would say well over half of the tiles that do suck. Truly suck.

Hell, unless I am missing something, Civil War is not even getting a 4K release.

I think people think this should be a feature, but do not realize it does not really need to be. At least right now.

lol you can't patch a drive in

How does the Xbox One S support this but the PS4 Pro doesn't?

That is so strange considering Sony and BluRay go hand and hand.

the only reason i can think of is that the ps4 optical drive seems proprietary so they would need to develop a new drive to support UHD blurays. the two skus likely even share components including the drive and opted for cost savings.

the xb1 is a much more modular designed console so the xb1s drive is likely just a uhd oem drive modified slightly.

xb1 slim

I really can't understand why Sony would do this. I mean the PS3 being the cheapest BluRay player on the market was a huge boost to the format. The PS4 Pro could have done the same for UHD discs, and Sony would stand to benefit...

Why have a 4K console that can't consume the most reliable 4K media?...

Makes no sense.

No cares about Blurays anymore, guys.

People who would buy a PS4 Pro over a PS4 Slim are people who would want to play 4k Blurays.

There is a venn-diagram where "Likely PS4 Pro Owners" and "People who want to play 4k Blurays" have a large intersection.

Now those people have to consider an Xbox One S, because it's the cheapest 4K Bluray player on the market.

Am I the only who thinks that Blu-Rays will be dead in 2 years? Sony has the numbers, I think they feel it too.

Digital future, ya'll.

This makes no sense. Microsoft's console that already shipped at a cheaper price includes it. Why can't this "Premium" device arriving in November have it?

I was thinking about skipping the S and Scorpio since I have a powerful PC, and getting a Pro as my main media device, but now I'm not sure.

I'm not dropping $7,000 on a 4K HDR OLED to be restricted to only streaming content.

Is this something which could be patched in post release via firmware or is it a hardware limitation?

Even if it was able to be added via firmware, I doubt they will otherwise they would have put it in there at release.

baffling decision

They cant

Its probably tied to the type of laser they use to read discs.

Keep costs low, which is part of why ps4 won this gen. People can disagree, but that is why they did it.

Sony got up there and talked about a ton of 4k and yet this machine doesn't even really do anything in true 4k.

Even when talking about the games Cerny said how they were "astonishingly close" to 4k. And it will stream 4k which will be heavily artifacted compared to a disc
4Kinda lives on!

That would be a hell of a patch.

Bad idea and a massive missed opportunity. Also surprising that Microsoft's slim has a feature that Sony's high-end, hardcore-focused, 4K-boasting model doesn't.

For you.
Are you serious right now? Please go outside of GAF for once.
He isnt wrong. The mainstream wont care about the Pro with a Slim model right next to it being 100$ cheaper. Pro is catered into entusiasts and so a omission like this will indeed affect purchasingg decisions of some percentage of the userbase.

Yes, these threads are just showing that, huh?

4k blurays are THE reason to buy physical media. 4K streaming is disappointing.
There is almost no point to a 4k TV if it's not UHD blurays. And I'm someone with a 4k Tv and no UHD player for now, because I was waiting for Neo announcement. Xbox One S it is I guess...

Strange. Sony is the one who brought us DVDs thanks to PlayStation 2, then they gave us Blurays through PlayStation 3, and yet, PlayStation 4 isn't coming up with an upgrade.

Is the reason that there just isn't enough 4k Bluray content out there? Still I can see a lot of people buying the console just for 4k Blurays if it had it.

Ouch. 4k Bluray playback is pretty much my only reason for upgrading. Internet speeds are shitty here (4mb down) so discs are my only hope.

So this is a console for people with a 4k TV who want the best image quality... but don't mind watching compressed streams?
