Phil Spencer: '2017 won't be Halo FPS/Gears led'

Scalebound is perhaps the highest-profile video game cancellation of all time. That's huge news no matter what your opinion of the game is. In my personal case, I'm no fan of Platinum Games and I thought the game looked crap at its every showing for the most part. But even I can recognise how noteworthy it is for a game that was helmed by Hideki Kamiya, in development for at least three years and paraded at several conferences to be killed dead in its tracks. To me the whole situation is insane.

Not even the biggest cancellation for Microsoft this generation, let alone of all time. The implications of Fable Legends/Lionhead getting shut down was way bigger than Scalebound because Fable was a Xbox mainstay. That's like Guerrilla Amsterdam getting shut down.

Longer than WHO expected? HW2 releases this year, but we've made no mention of anything beyond that.

That seems... odd. Maybe Halo 6 is taking longer than expected and won't release this year?

I can't imagine Sea of Thieves or Crackdown 3 "leading" Microsoft's lineup.

Why do people think Halo 6 is coming out this year?

It's a 3 year dev cycle and has been forever except halo3>4 which had odst/reach inbetween, we won't see it until next year at the earliest.. unless there's a spinoff of sorts.

This Scalebound cancellation has people thinking all kinds of crazy things. Yeah, bolded is not the case. I don't think the general masses cared about Scalebound or even knew about it. As for the more hardcore gamer people, like those of us that take the time to post on forums like this, interest was lukewarm at best.

If this game had been as highly anticipated and well received as Horizon Zero Dawn for example it might not have been canceled IMO.

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
Edit,

Nevermind. Already addressed.

While Scalebound"s cancellation made me sad, come on, even Silent Hills had a higher profile cancellation

Agreed. Microsoft's handling of Lionhead and the Fable IP is one of their most baffling blunders this gen.

Lol no one expected Halo 6 this year

Anyway I hope what they release is successful. Xbox needs new franchises
I'd love to see MS really throw its weight behind Sea of Thieves.

You didnt read this thread then, did you? people do expect halo 6 this year. or even a halo 3 anniversary scorpio exclusive turbo max edition
I guess I didn't. People really thought they would be able to make another AAA Halo game in 2 years?

Yeah that's one that I really think could be big, especially with the Destiny crowd. I actually think it would be smart to release it in Q1 2018 away from Destiny 2 and the other big third party games
All these Halo 6 questions. Is Halo relevant again? :D

But i expect a Halo 6 announcement tho. CGI trailer. Next year more and release.
I think more than a CG trailer, gameplay demo like they revealed Gears 4. They're gonna want to show it running on Scorpio

Minecraft as a franchise is instantly recognizable but the characters in it are not as iconic as Mario. With the game you create your own characters and worlds so it's harder to apply to other genres.

Secondly, even if these spin-offs worked, putting them only on Xbox or GFW would kill a huge amount of potential customers. You'd have to keep them completely multiplat and accessible for kids.

Making it exclusive is the point of owning the IP, it would get people to buy your console.

I have no idea who the characters are in the game, however, my son knows all of them and I'd guess most kids that play it also do. I'm not sure if most on here realize how huge this game is with the younger generation, my son and all his friends are obsessed with this game. I talk to coworkers that have kids of similar age and they say the same thing. I just can't understand not taking advantage of that.

Why do people expect mainline Halo under 3 years when it never happens

Halo 1: 11/15/2001

Halo 2: 11/9/2004

Halo 3: 9/25/2007

Halo 4: 11/06/2012

Halo 5: 10/27/20015

Halo 6: Logical Expectation 2018

Minecraft is viewed as a service by Microsoft. That's why they continue to get it on everything possible and drive the microtransactions with the console versions.

There were rumblings of their next project around last E3 but I can't remember if that was based on info from a reliable insider or some random pulling things out of their arse.

I dont know doesnt make sense really. I mean its a indie studio with people all over the world. Ori took arround 4 years also to make. And after the success of Ori. MS would probably love to got further with it.

The point of owning the IP is to make money and they'll make more money by selling it on every system under the sun than by restricting it to xbone/W10.

They could add a few extra bells and whistles on Xbone/W10 but making it an exclusive would be a huge mistake. Get it into as many hands as possible and you have a bigger market for minecraft toys/movies/spin-off games etc. plus they can rake in the cash from cosmetics/dlc/microtransactions

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.

CGI or Scorpio?

Nobody will be able to tell ;-)

People can say what they want but Scalebound was a very big cancellation. 4 years of development down the drain. The game was shown at several E3's and demoed several times on stage. Stuff like that just doesn't happen in this day n age. I can't think of any other cancelled game to compare in this regard. Kamiya has a really great resume and history too.

Silent Hills was a big deal but it was just a concept and teaser. They even stated the final game may not look like the demo. It wasn't 4 years of development and it all made sense once people found out Kojima departed Konami. Scalebound will be a head scratcher for a while I think. Especially when you consider the cancellation happened less than a year b4 MS releases their most powerful console ever.
