Senators are expected to vote Tuesday on the nomination of Betsy DeVos for education secretary. She is expected to be confirmed, with Vice President Mike Pence casting the tie-breaking vote. All 48 members of the Democratic caucus and two Republicans -- Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins -- oppose DeVos, but Pence would give Republicans the one extra vote they need.

So for those catching up DeVos' appointment has basically been under siege from virtually every side for a while now. Two Republican senators have folded, but we need 3 to block since Pence can just break what will be the 50/50 split in favor of Devos. As it stands she's going to slide in, Sessions is assumed to enter no problem as well. Remember all you need is a simple majority so without bipartisan support in rejecting a nomination, Dems have no clout.

I hope the protests begin when she is confirmed. I hope it continues until she has to step down. She essentially bought this job. She has no experience whatsoever for it.

Republicans are party before country, always. People like McCain, Flake, Graham are fucking cowards. Shit the two republicans who are voting against are fucking cowards, since they could have blocked her in committee, but didn't. Their vote is just to save their asses, they actually do want DeVos.

Aye reading back on some of the protests against her even in deep red areas is pretty nuts. Republicans basically plugged their ears, shut their eyes to their own constituency.

As of Thursday afternoon, more than 11,500 faxes had been sent to Toomey in the last week, according to the tracking website Fax Zero. In the last 24 hours alone, the count was more than 8,000. He also gets tweeted at every couple of minutes, usually related to DeVos, ACA or another concern of progressive constituents. It’s become clear: Toomey is one of the most wanted Senators in the United States.

No other member of Congress or Senator in Washington has come close to receiving the amount of faxes he has in the past week. His count of 11,500 was about 10,000 more than the next-closest recipient, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Fellow Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey had received about 800. Ohio Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown, who have also been considered possible no-votes on DeVos, weren’t among the top 10 in faxes, having received fewer than 750 in the last week.

“It’s amazing,” said Hannah Laurison, an organizer of the protest group Tuesdays With Toomey. “Who would’ve thought fax would be the weapon in the political wars of 2017?”

These are easily the worst two cabinet picks. Sessions is an avowed racist. Him in charge of Justice is going to be stomach churningly awful. DeVos is going to cut funding to public schools and it's also going to be bad, but I don't anticipate a bunch of deaths immediately from her confirmation ya know?

Yeah, from what I understand, the two Republicans who are now saying they'll vote against her are in pretty purple states who have been deluged with calls.

Their saying no just allows it to go to Pence, which shifts some of the blame off of them.....if you ignore the fact that they voted to push her through in the confirmation committee.

I don't necessarily understand how they think that logic will work, but.....who knows.

I mean it seems the long term goal of the GOP is to create a poor, uneducated, unhealthy peasant class they can easily control so they can create corporate serfdoms. Devos is just another step towards destroying this country's education system.

Just figured it would be politically expedient to pick someone else, even if just for public perception. Everyone knows that she's incompetent and unqualified, and this would be the smallest of olive branches.

When the question comes up in a debate or whatever, they can deny that they helped push her through, by pointing to the final vote which their votes didn't matter. People will remember the final vote, not the one in committee. I hope they get voted the fuck out next time they're out.

Ain't gonna happen. I don't know why people think it will. If two republicans are on board, all democrats will be as well. No fucking democrat is going to purposefully sabotage their own parties vote, they only vote against their party when the outcome is fixed anyhow

It was probably a backroom GOP deal to allow the two GOP senators who are voting against DeVos to do so. The GOP knows those senators are vulnerable in their reelection campaigns, so this gives them a talking point to appeal to moderates and say they opposed DeVos, all while knowing that a 50-50 tie would be broken in the GOP's favor anyway by Pence.

What about the past month indicated republicans were willing to even humor the thought of extending olive branches? We literally had Rubio wholesale shitting on Tillerson then turning around and being the key to voting the guy in for the committee on allowing a floor vote.

Collins isn't up for re-election until 2020 and may retire rather than run again.

It doesn't matter, Collins would flip anyway. Collins is doing this because she knows none of her colleagues will flip. They already had meetings and I'm sure this was agreed upon.

As much as the Republican Party pisses me off the one thing that I think Dems could learn from them is in their ability to stand together. There is a lot of debate on it lately but too often Dems are too busy fighting each other than their real opposition, and the lack of organization and firm messaging only gives a stronger advantage to the GOP in my view.
