What the fuck do you want us to do other than poo poo those events as they happen? There is no huge conglomerate hive mind way of approaching these situations like the Nazis have. Those that use the left as an excuse for violence have always been and should always by called out for it, and we do call it out. But unlike Nazis, our end goal isn't the complete erradication of all non whites. We don't go out there too cause or instigate violence, and just as that guy can say there are lots of "cock suckers" out there who will act as individuals, I think if you look at the numbers of attacks motivated by special sides you're going to find that a lot more innocent people have died at the hands of white supremacists and American Nazis than anybody on the left on this country.

And to the guy who dropped his pipe bomb and announced he was leaving, you're not cm punk and you don't get to walk or without being challenged.

Yes, thats basically it.

The thing a lot of people misunderstand about these situations is most of the pro-nazi people are young adults who failed in life. They come from middle class families and had every opportunity to succeed, but can't get a job, can't stay in the military, can't pass college, etc. The guy in this car incident applied for army service but got kicked out after just a few weeks.

While in the past poor people were more easily swayed to join its not as much the rank and file anymore, because they know life already sucks and is unfair against them and if they will ever get ahead in life its because of luck and hard work, not because of random strangers or the government.

Its the same in the middle east (ISIS), Africa (Boko Haram), Asia (ISIS), etc. Young, disaffected mostly men who come from the middle class and will desperately cling to anything that puts the blame for their personal failings on someone else.

No, his argument was backing up my point from earlier, which was that the left has tried the violent route before and it doesn't work. We have also tried the opposite approach and it DID work. His post was replying to the ignorant notion that the left has never tried venting our frustrations with violence in response to injustice. He is just pointing out that our side's fringes have done this already and that is how they ended up on the fringe of society instead of steering mainstream sentiment.

Violence does not 'win' a battle of ideas. It only makes you weaker by giving the enemy exactly what they want to help their message resonate.

Yes, though not necessarily poor. Working class is probably a better descriptor. RR is a leftist (primarily socialist but not any particular faction) organization promoting gun ownership and training. Their main purposes are to get people on the left armed for defense and to try to work within the white working class, which is a group that is prone for radicalization by the right. You dont have to be white to join, but it is primarily white because, I mean, theyre self proclaimed red necks. They're putting their privilege to work for the left. It's outreach in the heart of the beast.

Basically they are trying to get white people to stop being racists. "Guns are fine, racism isnt."

They think, "he'll grow out of it" or "he seems like a good kid otherwise, so I'm sure he'll be okay". People have the idea that racist aren't the people you meet at the store and go to school with. They make racist into cartoon villains were a racist is this evil man that steals candy from children when the truth is it's usually your uncle or cousin who hates the Jews and Blacks. That's why there is always this disbelief when they finally come out and show their true colors. They think that if a person is really racist, they must be a horrible person to everyone and everything they do.

I'm not going to blame the teacher(he says he tried) but people have to call people out on their racism or it just gets worse. Probably wouldn't have stopped this ass but it helps let them know it's not acceptable.

You asked why he posted his argument and I told you the context. Not my problem if you can't handle that. And a world war is NOT what we are engaged in. Our soldiers were either killing Nazis or dying by their hand as their lives were in imminent danger. Your life is not in imminent danger as a result of these Nazis wannabes today. How stupid are you to conflate a genocidal world war with a tiny fringe group rallying at a fucking statue?! Further, we just had a guy from the town I teach in shoot up a ball game in Washington, DC. We have also had violent riots in Ferguson, MO (which I drive through 4 days a week on my way to the other schools I teach at) not long ago that were successfully anchored to the BLM movement. Folks like Malcolm X advocated to violent reactions to injustice and to this day the general populace hates him and refuses to acknowledge any of his ideas, even the great ones. Do you understand why Bush and Obama refused to label international terrorism with the Muslim moniker? Do you understand why ISIS loves the fact that Trump tries to label them as representing Islam? Do you understand how much harm came from the events at places like Gitmo, or Bagram air base? In a battle of ideas as important as this one you cannot afford to give into the baiting of the other side. You cannot afford to do their work for them and give them their propaganda ready-made on a silver platter. You cannot afford to throw away demographics that could easily stand with you and turn the tide towards burying these fringe assholes. Something feeling good momentarily does not do a thing towards solving the problem. It only escalates things and loses you allies.

The point is that the left does itself harm by advocating violence just for the sake of being violent. It sets the ideas we are trying to convey back a decade or more time and again. Assaulting people for what they believe in is NOT ok. It isn't ok when Nazis do it. It isn't ok when ppl on the left do it (see: various clips of Richard Spencer and his ilk getting sucker punched, check your favorites list if need be). It isn't ok when Trump supporters at a rally do it. It isn't ok when the victim of that violence is perceived to be a broader threat to our way of life like how right wing nuts frame things as they attack abortion clinics. It is NOT ok under ANY circumstances unless you are helping protect someone from imminent harm. Unless you are in such a scenario, there are better, smarter, more effective measures to be taken that do not require you to totally abandon your principles. Might does NOT make right.
