Goodell is an absolute piece of shit for letting the league get to where it is now. NFL is stuck in the 1950's. It's one of the reasons I personally stopped watching.

I commend the athletes that are taking a stance against the president on this. It still blows my mind the people who take issue against this. Like, every article on ESPN about an athlete taking issue on the presidents comments has some old white dude saying "you're just an athlete, we don't pay you for your political opinions" as the most up voted comment. I'm white, but it what world am I supposed to be able to understand the racial injustice of our society where I've never been able to experience it first hand. I mean, I try to be empathetic to the best of my ability; but that's still a far cry from experiencing it first hand. Just blows my mind that there are people who think they understand shit they've never been subjected to.

Upset people are going to lash out, people that agree are just going to nod their heads.

You also have what is probably a more pro Trump fan base that is being made uncomfortable. Want to hear the ignorance of an average fan, listen to sports radio and the geniuses that call in. These are the same people who will complain on Facebook.

It's funny because they're also the first people to pull the "You're supposed to be a role model!" line for something they did off field.

This is such a tired argument. There are and were more players than just Kaep who were kneeling. There are players, owners, the commish, and local movements (like Malcolm Jenkins and the Eagles) who work on these issues.

I mainly boycott it because of the lack of any kind of care on the players safety. This just adds fuel to the fire

Fair enough but the league and game is violent in nature. There is research in safer helmets and they have reduced practices, changed rules on the hits, and other minor moves but it will never be enough.

Remember this is because a few people knelt during the National Anthem. Yet when black people are killed by cops with no repercussion, you don't hear a peep from them except to say "he was a thug."

It's hilarious seeing people "done" with their favorite football team for kneeling. Okay.

Have we mentioned how the actual National Anthem written my Keys actually has a 4th verse :

A fifth verse was written by Oliver Wendell Holmes right after the civil war, but I don't think it was ever considered official

And I believe it calls the South a 'foe' and celebrates the emancipation and acceptance of slaves into society

Some, and I agree, think we should sing the part we do now, along with this fifth verse.

So yea, the original Star Spangled Banner was kinda racist.

Except every time someone says to just listen to the other side, it's almost always one-sided and the opposite side never listens to the other's POV(s). So that conversation where one listens is unproductive in the grand scheme of things. Additionally, just because someone is molded by their life experiences and has certain beliefs, doesn't mean that belief isn't wrong, I'm gonna post what I said earlier about people who defend the anthem but lack the perspective required to understand what defending the anthem actually means:

Having researched the anthem, I strongly feel that to defend the anthem would be akin to defending the statues that were torn down because of its roots in racism.

2) Why is there so much hyperidealization going on when it comes to the anthem as well as what it represents in the eyes of people? People conflate the meaning of the anthem as if it refers to American men who fought in WW1, and WW2 when its roots is actually in the War of 1812 (which was to fight off the British Empire, so notions of freedom doesn't really apply as well in this case). Not to mention the hypocrisy of silencing dissent when they fail to realize that if they argue freedom, then you must realize that you also have the freedom to voice your displeasure with the country as a whole. "Well if you don't like it then gtfo," misses the whole point unless you're intentionally obtuse and are the human representation that "ignorance is bliss." No country is without flaws and people should be working towards eliminating as many of these flaws as possible, not devolving and sticking to broken systems and formulas.

Additionally, I find it hypocritical to argue "disrespecting the flag"/"disrespecting the military" because it's being selective with history. No one mentions how marginalized groups like Natives and First Nations have become ostracized when the colonizers took over their land, so they pick "disrespecting the flag" as the hill to die on? All I'm saying is if you're going to make the argument that disrespecting the flag is a thing then: 1) recognize that the flag is a completely arbitrary creation of false and hyperidealized notions of what it means to be a good country, and 2) have the perspective to realize that the flag was and is not eternal, people were fucked over to get to this point in society.

Exactly. It's the same reason why Republicans think liberals want to take away all of their guns and that there is a War against Christianity, Christmas, America and the Military. Whatever Fox News or Rush Limbaugh says gets parroted by their indoctrinated fan base.

The statement is complete shit, but I doubt Ben would have put it out if they had just come out normally and some players knelt and some stood.

This entire thing blew up in Tomlin's face because the entire team didn't agree like the Titans and Seahawks did. When you have AV out there by himself, it puts the light on the rest of the team and makes them look bad.
