Fifa 18 on Switch doesn't allow you to play online with friends

What. Ok. May be a reason to fire up MK again sometime then. Thanks guys. Never been so glad to have been proven wrong :D

Now, about that OS-level friend invite system that would make all this a lot easier/obvious across games... Do it, Nintendo. What have you got to lose.

This is inexcusable. They didn't think a different feature was worth cutting over this one? Right when you think EA was serious about this port.

I have no friends, so...

Most of my friends don't play Fifa, or play Madden/2k. I can invite them over to play, if I want to. It's not too big of an issue for me. Most of my time will probably be spent in FUT or other modes.

Suppose they had to make you not want to buy it somehow.
I bought it anyway - just came from Amazon. Its portable FIFA - and I've played FIFA since what... FIFA 94? I don't think I have ever played it online. That's of course just me though - unless a game calls for it (like splatoon) I don't play online.

Same. First FIFA in 19 years, so don't mind missing/non-parity features as much, but I would still like to have the option to play with friends. It's not '94 anymore, you know.

That sucks so much :/

But I'm not sure I could blame EA, pretty sure it has A LOT to do with Nintendo shitty online support.

Yeah I know - but playing it online with a friend I can see is a draw - but what 5-10% of your overall game time at most?

It's also not Nintendo's doing which pisses me off more based on the feeling in the thread.

I personally wouldn't play it much no. But quality always > quantity. I usually enjoy playing games with friends a lot more than I do randoms or AI. Those 5-10% may be the most fun moments too. Oh well. I'll be able to enjoy the rest of the game hopefully. It just came in, hoping for the best ✌🏻.

It's pretty lame, 2k only lets you play with friends in the mycareer neighborhood. I think you might have been able to play together on your mycourt couch, but it literally crashes the game when you choose the option. It has ranked online matches, but no public friend search.

Nintendo, Capcom, Sega, Konami and even indie dev Shin'en let you play with friends. Sure, Nintendo should have better features on an OS level but that doesn't excuse what you hand over to the consumer. If indie developers can jump through hoops I'm sure the largest publisher out there can give it a shot.

Great post, will use in the OP

Explains why they didn't send early review copies. My biggest annoyance is that they didn't tell us, trying to trick people into buying it. Hope they come out with a PR statement saying they'll patch it in.

I can't invite my friends over and often play online so it does affect me. This thread isn't really for people who never play online to come in and declare that everything is alright because they never use the mode anyway, it adds nothing.

This is a core feature of the game and has been for YEARS, the fact that it's portable shouldn't disallow something as simple as playing with friends.

They actually think charging for this online service is acceptable?

Uh... Are you paying for it already?

This doesn't really affect me but God damn it throws a huge wrench into the collective hype for this game. I can't wrap my head around how they'd let a game like goddamn FIFA get to market without a "play against friends" option.

I'm not saying it's alright. It's not. It's a problem and should be patched.

Sure, the Switch has some sort of matchmaking, but if it's so much work to implement that EA have decided to cut it to save time, then I'd say Nintendo have fucked up. At the end of the day it's their responsibility to create a framework that allows developers to easily hook into their ecosystem, they're planning to charge money for this after all.

It can't be soo much work if the RMX team (of four people), were able to implement it. IT wasn't a priority for EA and they should be happy with the sales result of this exclusion.

How do you ship a game without a play with friends option? Like how do you bother to do all this other shit but not that?

EA fucking sucks. They embargoed this shit so they could fool people into buying it.

It's pretty messed up how we didn't know this feature was missing until today. My copy already shipped 2 days ago, and I guess I'll keep it for portable play. But I wonder how many people would have reconsidered their purchase if this was widely known?

Another case of third-parties rushing their shit in to meet the Holiday deadline.

Features missing, buggy software, etc.

I commend them for getting some of their heavy-hitters on the Switch this early. They're not Capcom. But come on, there has to be some middle ground here.

...and did you buy it?

This is quite shady and it's definitely a case where the consumer should have waited for reviews before buying the game. You know a publisher is up to some shit when reviews are embargoed until after the game is out.

This isn't a Nintendo issue but an EA one.

Yes Nintendo online sucks but other games on Nintendo support playing with friends

Third party games on Nintendo systems never ever get bought until the player impressions are out bar stuff like Monster Hunter. But Fifa is such a huge franchise not ever consumer will wait for reviews on a Switch version. Not for something so basic. That's why this is so slimy.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Explains why they didnt wanna reviews hit until very late for the Switch version.

Is there even the *slightest* chance that we're on the eve of Nintendo announcing a proper party/friend system, and this recent title is missing some functionality due to it being present natively on the Switch?

I'm really reaching here, but it's just such a glaring omission.

Nah, actually its very likely...but it still sucks that they tried to hide the fact until launch.

The fact that 3rd parties have to create their own custom implementation/workarounds for such basic functionality in the first place is sad. Syphon Filter on PSP had online lobbies, friend invites, and built-in voice chat over a decade ago.

When the day comes that Nintendo begins charging for this joke of an online "service"...may God help them.

Having tried to connect with a few different friends over the weekend, with no fucking luck- this is absolutely horse shit. Have they acknowledged this yet?

Did anyone see this from Eurogamer during the week?

https://www.google.com.au/amp/www.eurogamer.net/amp/2017-10-05-we-asked-ea-to-explain-why-you-cant-play-fifa-18-online-against-friends-on-nintendo-switch

Unfortunately, EA's response is a frustrating mess that completely dodges the question.

FIFA 18 on Switch offers Local Seasons allowing friends to play against each other across two consoles in close proximity to one another, and we encourage those looking to compete online to take advantage of online modes on Switch including FIFA Ultimate Team, Online Seasons, and Online Tournaments.
