Nope. These are THE EXACT textures that are inside Uncharted 3. 720p resolution makes them look much worse than they could be.
Also, Orbis has hardware for automatic decompressing of textures, they could be much more detailed than these ones that can fit in 512MB console.
yup and then some, and there's nothing OMG FABLEDDD about it.

All jokes aside, is it possible that NextGen we will see some larger titles ship on two BluRays?
4CUs forms a cluster with it's own cache, so it makes sense for 'reserved' GPGPU items to be a multiple of 4CU.
http://www.amd.com/uk/Documents/GCN_Architecture_whitepaper.pdf
apparantly GCN has dual ACEs (asynchronous compute engines) which schedule graphics or compute work to CUs. This might mean that you are limited in the granularity of how you address jobs, and so Sony went with a 14:4 setup (14CUs for graphics, 4CU for GPGPU). Not sure if the cut down CUs compared to something like 7970 might mean only one ACE for Orbis?
http://developer.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/AMD_Southern_Islands_Instruction_Set_Architecture.pdf
also, the DMA engines are a standard part of GCN - wasn't this speculated as 'special sauce' for Durango? But might be standard in the architecture - dont' know if it's simply not exposed in DirectX and therefore not utilised directly on PC GPUs?
I disagree. $500 for a DS4, 2 Move+1 Eye, large HDD and a game is a package a fair amount of people will go for.
This is how I see it going:
$350: Base model - PS4, DS4, 250gb HDD, 1 month PS+
$400: + Model - PS4, 1-2 DS4, 500gb HDD, 1 year PS+, PS Store credit $10-25
$450: Move Model - PS4, DS4, 1 Move+PSEYE, $250gb HDD, 1yr PS+, Move Game, PS Store credit $10-25
$500: Premium Model - PS4, 1-2 DS4, 2 Move+PSEye, 750gb HDD, 1yr PS+, 1 PS4 game, PS Store credit $25+
Disagree. If you are in the market for a high end TV, i.e. a great 2D image, the set is also going to be 3D.
Nice my source was right.
I thought for sure we were getting Durango info but this is great. Excellent specs and its good that they are more or less confirmed.
The hardware is there now we just have to wait for the games.
You agree with me. We were talking about base price.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that one of Orbis' features (special features) is 4k (BLXL) drive. The only reason why I could see Sony dropping a BDXL into the PS4 is either 4k or insanely large texture files. Cost isn't that bad for 3rd party externals, but even a small difference in cost could make or break the system at retail.
Yeah you get my vote of confidence.
can someone please dumb down all this tech talk
Yeah you get my vote of confidence.
No, because Blu-rays will have more than 50GB of capacity...
Also, I got a hunch that a fair amount of stuff posted is wrong/not detailed enough for us to know how powerful the PS4 really is...
Aaaalso, lol @ people thinking that this will cost more than $400. The BOM will be less than $300 and when you factor in the other things, you get a machine which you can price at $399 while still making a profit.

read the hundred page threads that already assumed these exact specs, right down to memory bandwidth.
probably the best you can expect from a profitable console under $400 in 2013.
interesting theory about reserving the CU....i think if true, makes the specs even more depressing...14 CU graphics... that is between 7770 and 7850...the rumors that developers are targetting GTX570 performance are true?
im not sure why sony went with a APU SOC. trying to cramp everything into a die...could they be thinking of shortening the console cycle to compete with iOS/Android? PS4.5, add another APU SOC to double the performance?

it's an impressive piece of kit. somewhat more powerful than durango on paper, but both are still unknowns in performance, etc and both still have certain elements to their architecture that haven't been revealed yet.
that's my take on it. I'm sure someone who knows about this stuff will be along to correct any mistakes I've made.
can someone please dumb down all this tech talk
The Blu-ray specs are wrong. Blu-ray is CLV, so it will have the same read speed throughout the disc. There is nothing in the Blu-ray specification that allows for CAV. Sony would be using a non-standard Blu-ray drive in the PS4 if they used CAV, I find this unlikely.
500+ guaranteed. Sony won't learn from there mistakes with the PS3.
It's great. But nothing new.can someone please dumb down all this tech talk

high end 3D televisions are selling extremely poorly. Panasonic, Sony, and Sharp are all on the verge of liquidating their divisions.
The low end is selling, but 3D has been a failure at pushing high end sets. This isn't something I'm making up for fun, a 5 second google search will tell you this.
i doubt final console os will take 3GB of ram, sorry, early alpha versions? sure, final? no way
You agree with me. We were talking about base price.

The cost of the controllers/camera will push it over $400
No pictures? Shame.
Fuck, this year is going to be expensive, PS4+New Xbox+WII-U.
It's great. But nothing new.
i find it a little odd that you'd prevent devs using almost 30% of the available CUs for graphics, but I bet there are ways around it - look at how the SPEs were used for graphics-based tasks to help RSX. I hope as a developer you get to choose to use both banks for graphics if you want.
Does Uncharted 3 even take up all of 25GB of disc space? Think if every game made was for the 50GB disc storage. We're looking at some high quality stuff, not to mention lossless game soundtracks. Don't forget Dolby true-HD and DTS MA
I don't think it's that simple. We just can't say "176GB/s is better 68GB/s"? That's like ignoring Durango's 32MB eSRAM's 102GB/s and DME's. Those things considered, at the end Orbis will have an edge in bandwidth but imh I think Durangos edge in RAM volume will prove more advantageous than Orbis's edge in bandwidth.
The original Killer Instinct in the arcade was GODLY!... back in the days when the N64 was still called the Ultra 64. Ultra, ultra, ultra, ultra, ultra (fading into the distance).Just PS4 for me, unless MS unveils Killer Instinct 3.
Just PS4 for me, unless MS unveils Killer Instinct 3.
Just PS4 for me, unless MS unveils Killer Instinct 3.
Maybe there is still a cell processor in there, but since it's only for BC... developers won't have access to it.. so there can be consoles without cell. A sku option down the line!
(I want to believe.)
