VGleaks: Orbis Unveiled! [Updated]

If this were the case we would see PC video cards with 8GB of DDR3, you don't.

Maybe if AMD or Nvidia were to add eDRAM, but they prefer to use every transistor for shader cores, etc.

A card like the 7970 20nm with 64MB eDRAM high bandwidth, accompanied with 8GB DDR3. I doubt most PC devs would like though.

Weren't there rumors that a new Perfect Dark and Shadow Complex were being worked on as launch titles ? If so, fuck... I may have to buy more than one console.

If it is anything like the 360's Perfect Dark (which I was hyped for) it will not be worth buying for :( It did have nice looking textures and bricks at least.

So based on this, orbis is slightly more powerful than durango and the last generation is going to be playing on loop for some more years?

the shadow complex rumour was bs I think. the guy was making stuff up as he went along. rumble triggers, a water based raver from rare, perfect dark, shadow complex 2 and a few more things.

Does Uncharted 3 even take up all of 25GB of disc space? Think if every game made was for the 50GB disc storage. We're looking at some high quality stuff, not to mention lossless game soundtracks. Don't forget Dolby true-HD and DTS MA

Uncharted 3 is 45 GIGABYTES! But 10GB are 3D FMVs, ~13GB are 2D FMVs, and there 7GB of non-english audio localization files. If they sticked to realtime animations, main game is could have been little larger than one single layered bluray. But they had space, so they went wild.

[edit - this is for Bluray version, dunno about PSN store]

Based on what? Double of the ram is not that crazy thing if the bandwith is more restricted... & durango has 32 MB eSRAM, remember. Tiling is not a problem on Orbis where on Durango will be. Why people continues to think more RAM is important? It's absolutely false.

why would you need tiling @ 1080p with 32MB of eSRAM (even if it were setup the same way as 360)?

Just from a consistency POV...this was also in their original 'leak'. 'PCAV, between 3.3 and 8x BD, most likely clamped to 6x'

http://www.vgleaks.com/world-exclusive-ps4-in-deep-first-specs/

So it is at least...err...consistent. Not sure what the logic is if true...

These specs read like they have been made up by a fanboy IMO. Someone who has read about the advantage that the 360 DVD drive has by using CAV and just applied it to PS4.

Either way, I find it unlikely that this is the case.

One SKU would be brilliant because it would very likely mean that Microsoft would have at least one SKU priced higher and that would give the illusion that the next Xbox would be more expensive than the PS4.

Orbis 1.8 TFlops
680 3.1 TFlops
7970 3.8 TFlops

And that's without Overclocking.

The really bad thing is there is going to be new GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD this year.

Next gen machines will be the same size as OG PS3/360. If you want to pander to the PC high end, I suggest you buy yourself a PC. We all knew there was no way either Orbis or Durango would include anything beyond 200 watts.

Those expecting either one of these consoles to be ridiculously more powerful than the other will be in for a big disappointment.

I was told one machine would be Gamecube the other would be Xbox by a certain developer. They would not specify. Take it for what you will.

How can this cost $400, when the PS3 still sells for $250?

PS3 is sold at a healthy profit.

I think the most interesting "new" part in this are the Extras, but there isn't really a lot of information there. However:

- Audio Processor (ACP)
Should take some signal processing load off the CPU, which is good considering its relative weakness at that task compared to Cell.

- Video encode and decode (VCE/UVD) units
Really interesting if we could get across-the-board support for low-latency streaming to Vita.

- Display ScanOut Engine (DCE)
I guess this time around the Sony console won't have a disadvantage in scaling.

- Zlib Decompression Hardware
Certainly interesting for loading and streaming.

This + extra 2 CU's are the special sauce.

We really don't know what's going on at either studio. Initially 50 employees (including Kaz) moved to the new Fukuoka studio. That would mean that the majority of that staff was still located in Tokyo. And all of their recent hirings give people to the option to work in Tokyo or Fukuoka.

Fukuoka branch was established primarily to host Network operations and GT Online servers.

I don't know 100% accurate information, but I think there can't be talk about "two studios" or whatever, PD never did branched-out and they always working everything in parallel.

Besides, their man power has increased almost exclusively at 3D-modelling department.

All their projects have always been done in parallel. If they are working on GT5 DLC/updates, they're working on it in their spare time while working on GT6/any another project.

Both Tourist Trophy and GTPSP has been produced in parallel while working on next-gen games (PS3 related back at the time). If they are working on something, they're working it as one team. No split in any way IMO.

So based in this, orbis is slightly more powerful than durango and the last generation is going to be playing on loop for some more years?

I think the gap is a little wider than PS3/360, if only because there we had the PS3 with a strong CPU and a weak GPU, and the 360 with a better GPU and unified ram.

This time Orbis seems to be better all around- but for all practical purposes third party games on the two will be close, with first party efforts really showing off the system.

If you didn't like last gen and don't want a repeat though- blame nintendo. specs wise they just sat out the generation again.

It's kind of sad consoles have fallen to this and the most interesting thing to look forward to is some hardwired compression units...
Especially since some of it doesn't really make that much sense to hardwire (except for the fact the CPU is downgraded for the first time in history, so gotta compensate somewhat).
Yeah, I agree. But what can you do when both the CPU architecture as well as the GPU architecture are well known? Even a hardware zlib implementation looks interesting at that point ;)

I feel one sku isn't going to be likely. there'll be a barebones sku and one with the dual cameras and move bundled in.

So, there's no cell or anything like this as 'special compute unit'. The roumored special compute unit is, in the best scenario, 4 of the 18 CUs, isn't it?

Insist on GDDR5 memory for an outstanding mobile computing experience!
GDDR5 is the ideal GPU graphics memory for the mainstream mobile users to achieve the right balance of high performance and power consumption for the ultimate on-the-go visual experience. Notebooks equipped with AMD Radeon™ HD 6000M Series GPUs and GDDR5 memory can enable up to 20% better graphics performance with minimal impact in battery life.1

Advantages of GDDR5
■GDDR5 is the de facto memory standard for today’s high performance GPUs – equip your notebooks with the latest and greatest technology!
■Provides twice the bandwidth of DDR3 to unlock the true potential of AMD Radeon™ GPUs2

Why is Memory Bandwidth Important?
■Notebooks with balanced amount of graphics memory and superior memory bandwidth will almost always provide a better visual computing experience
■Smooth visual computing experience will offer highly perceivable improvements in overall system performance

it doesnt have to be 14 CUs for graphics + 4 CUs for other tasks.
according to DF's leak, devs will be able to choose how they wanna use the GPU.

However, there's a fair amount of "secret sauce" in Orbis and we can disclose details on one of the more interesting additions. Paired up with the eight AMD cores, we find a bespoke GPU-like "Compute" module, designed to ease the burden on certain operations - physics calculations are a good example of traditional CPU work that are often hived off to GPU cores. We're assured that this is bespoke hardware that is not a part of the main graphics pipeline but we remain rather mystified by its standalone inclusion, bearing in mind Compute functions could be run off the main graphics cores and that devs could have the option to utilise that power for additional graphical grunt, if they so chose.

devs will probably be able to use all of the 18 CUs if they'll want to.

Orbis' GPU is supposed to be based on Pitcairn and was supposed to sit somewhere between 7850 and 7870 which the CU count shows. However, its texture unit is less than half, yes, less than half of Cape Verde GPU 7770 which has 40.

Damn... So in terms on compute power its more powerful than my 7770, but I can force 16x AF at no cost really in almost every game. And its glorious.

Billinear filtering in all console games again!!

While I find it unlikely we'll get a SKU under $399, the shockwaves it would send if it came in under that would be immense. It would automatically put Wii U on the grill and come in competitive to what MS is probably going to come in at. Of course, I don't expect it to happen.

Also, why does everyone keep saying that the Move Controller and Dual Camera is going to be in the initial SKU? The info just made it seem like it would support those periperals, not have them in the box as well.

This is shaping up to be the most disappointing gen ever. The PS4 is the most powerful machine and its specs are terrible especially considering that they'll probably price this at $400, if it was $250-$300 then fair enough.

that's now how I read that at all. they're saying that a standalone GPGPU (if one existed) makes no sense since adding that power to the GPU instead would allow you to use it for graphics also

GDDR5 will be the key to keeping PS4 ports on par if not better. 1st party stuff........well you will see lol

Geez, this thing will be an absolute beast due to the closed environment. I did own a 7850 before my GTX680 and it is a very nice GPU. Wish it would clock a bit higher than 800mhz in the PS4 though, but at least it should run cool.

If the rumored Durango specs are true, Sony 1st parties will slaughter it and most 3rd party games should be superior. Unlike last generation, there seems to be a clear advantage.

If devs target 1080p/30fps and not too much AA, exclusive titles should destroy most of the stuff we have on PC at the moment. Not in terms of IQ of course, but the overall package should be great.

do you think they will segregate the attach rate of "cameras, move, etc" in this coming generation?

I agree that single sku is pipe dream. More than 3 starts being less clean to market

so 2 skus with difference in storing capacity

See! See!

Improvement? Yes. But ever so slightly marginal.

How much i want to see the usual suspects now, how one had to put up with that storm of BS in every Wii U spec thread. If it only were 400 that'll make it even more sweet

Will this mean PS4 third party title will play better now? I want to get ps4 instead of xbox 720, but I'm afraid I will get the short end of the stick.

can someone please dumb down all this tech talk

depressing poor specs "upgrade" after almost 8 years. sony doing a Wii1.5

maybe sony is too poor lol or their hands are tied with the gimmicky camera/lcd screen... specs value wise, wont pay anything above $299 for it.

I remember the studio who made Killzone E3 CGI video commented that it can be done realtime in a few years time with next gen consoles...that was assuming the same pace of development.

killzone4.jpg

Doubt this can be achieve any soon. Orbis still retains the 2 tessellation units from GCN.

Fact that Microsoft actually went for DDR3, and so much of it, is actually further merit towards the rumour that quite a lot of it might be reserved for the OS. The question now is why? Will it have some radical features never seen before, or will it be more for a Windows 8 esque OS with lots of focus on multitasking?

For some reason, one SKU is the most exciting thing to come out of this. All these different models don't confuse me, but the annoy much more than I thought they did.

My guess is that 3rd party titles will look very close to the same. Program for lowest common denominator unless one has a much smaller installed base.

Good grief, that CGI trailer looks so ugly. The only thing it was good at was visual in a technical standpoint e.g. flame, clouds, fluidity, etc; most (all?) of which has been met by a lot of games. Everything else was ugly about it.

Advanced RAM volume - store more textures and higher-resolution textures - (Sound like more work for developers to make more textures or higher-resolution textures?)
Advanced RAM bandwidth - increasing framerate, more advanced image quality (resolution/AA) (I assume is it all in coding - few code lines to add or modify?)

Am I right?
