Marcus Beer vs ECA Ambassador "Hip Hop Gamer" Twitter feud

Long Story Short. Marcus Beer of Annoyed Gamer had a rant this morning on his GT Show about the "Hip Hop Gamer" being appointed Video Game Ambassador for the "Entertainment Consumers Association".

Rant at about 6:35
http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/vvqtsu/annoyed-gamer-pay-to-play--again-

Main Gripes with him:

- Hip Hop Gamer not adhering to journalistic standards despite claims of being the #1 games journalist. Lowering the bar for his field.

- Calling people 'faggots' online and walking around everywhere with a WWF Championship Belt around his shoulder

- Grabbing a dozen gift bags at Video Game PR Events

- Plagerism

Twitter Feud Below:

My view: Marcus is right. This is the wrong guy to represent the gaming industry, in the role as ambassador. The appointment is a joke, and it didn't take long for someone to find his comments calling people 'faggots' online

Damn, I thought HHG was much smarter than that.

I met him at a press event last year and he seemed very passionate was also quite friendly to people. Calling anyone a "pussy punk bitch faggot" is a huge no-no. So I'm not sympathetic for him at all. He should've known better.

This is what The ECA responded a couple days ago:

Gerard approached us wanting to know what he could do to help the cause. He's in the process of turning his life around, becoming more professional and inspirational to his friends and followers. It's exceedingly rare that we have individuals approach the organization laying it all out there, offering to do whatever they can, and asking for nothing in return. While we weren't aware of any of his perceived transgressions online, we choose to embrace his support, his efforts and his selflessness. If we were all judged solely upon the negatives in our past we would all be damned. We would like to give him the opportunity to be a voice for gamers and a positive role model for gaming.

I loved how they "weren't aware of any of his perceived transgressions online"

ECA is a joke, so Hiphop gamer is a perfect matching. Never understood why he is somehow relevant, and no, it's not racism speaking.

I Agree with op's appraisal 100%. The fact that he constantly spews about hard work and positivity reflects in no way on his skill (or lack thereof) as a journalist. Even how he is approachg settling the feud is indicative of his ineptitude. A real journalist would be a bit more introspective instead of just saying "LETS GET DA TRUTH"

Judging by the kind of 'voice' they've chosen for gamers, I guess ECA has no problem of the perceived gamer stereotype being 'The Dumbass Teenager on Xbox Live'.

I'm confused with the bottom image. Is that from shortly after the insults occurred at the conference? Or was it taken recently and HHG is recounting what happened in the past?

I was at an NYC Sony event to demo the PS Move to the public. He was there, yelling every 15 minutes about himself and yelling his own name. It was incredibly obnoxious and everyone was annoyed.

That's the kind of person you hope annoys the wrong guy at one of these events and he just redecorates the room with his ass.

Saw this earlier on twitter I was like wtf is going on lol. He even asked Geof for input.

Also OP I disagree with your post. He is the perfect ambassador for this industry. Just as you have accepted the F word and go with it you should accept the other F word. So much hypocrisy.

There are actually people calling themselves "Annoying Gamer" and "Hip Hop Gamer"?

Looks like the success of the "Angry Videogame Nerd" did make some waves in the Youtube community.

Regardless of what we think of HHG, the guy absolutely dominates the room wherever he goes. I was on the VGAs red carpet, and he controlled the space (interviews and such) like no one else there, Spike/GTTV staff excluded.

HHG is a nice guy-- I've met him twice during Michael Pachter's E3 Wedbush events-- but I'm also aware of his past and the ECA is at fault for not following through with due diligence before taking him on in an "ambassador" capacity.

His issues with plagiarism are documented. His issues with language are documented. Allegations of conflict of interest have dogged him. He's not a good pick to be an ambassador of any brand except his own.

If what the ECA claims is true, and HHG is really turning over a new leaf, then he's going to have to prove it by bring a model citizen. No more belts. No more "shots fired". No more shilling for Sony because one of his songs gets used. If he's going to represent the ECA-- which allegedly represents us as gaming consumers-- then he needs to be a person and not a character.

I have to say there should be some licence for social media and people could get them revoked like driving licence.

How can you be not aware? Do they give the title to random people without checking them out?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOh, so it was HipHopGamer who took those 12 gift bags from GDC last year! I remember hearing about that on the Bombcast, but they wouldn't say who actually did it.

I've seen HipHopGamer work in person, his interviews aren't...well let's put it this way. If you are playing a character that's a journalist, and that character is loud and bombastic and pushy and aggressive, you can't get too upset when people don't take you seriously and think you're setting a lower standard. Angry Joe has to go through all the same things that HipHopGamer does with all the same hang ups because, at the end of the day, he's just a dude that's screaming about things on the internet who has no professional training and has to answer to no one but his audience.

I would be super interested to see what bombastic journalists like him would do with an editor.

I was at an NYC Sony event to demo the PS Move to the public. He was there, yelling every 15 minutes about himself and yelling his own name. It was incredibly obnoxious and everyone was annoyed.

He did the same thing at the Boston Move event I attended.

There's a reason why the PR people wait at a table at the end of press events to hand out tchotchke bags to individuals...

I never know how to read twitter. Do I start at the top or the bottom, either way it never makes sense to me.
Depends on the view mode. The regular timeline & search is read bottom to top, while something in conversation mode is read top to bottom. Use the timestamps if you can't figure it out; in this case both images are read top to bottom.

He's dominating rooms because nobody wants to call him out on his loud obnoxious ill informed bullshit for fear of stuff like this happening. The man should of been discouraged from the start but people kept feeding him and his silly persona.

He's popular and makes a ton of money, plus the games industry like him because he's got big reach and will shill whatever free shit he's given that week. Even if game journalists told him enough was enough -- as has happened with this ECA bullshit -- he'd still carry on and the PR people at the publishers/console manufacturers will carry on feeding his ego.

No way someone like "Hip Hop Gamer" represents me. I'm a 30 year old working professional, I don't need morons like him showing the masses what kind of people gamers are. He's only going to further increase the mass media's perceived association of video games and youth delinquency. Get someone like Geoff Keighly, Adam Sessler, Daniel Kayser, or even Angry Joe. Not Hip Hop Gamer; the guy is a complete dolt.

It was during last year's Wedbush E3 event that the alleged theft took place. Unfortunate stuff. Suddenly there were many fewer gift bags than there were people on the guest list, and organizers were understandably upset.

I've had HipHop on my show and have spoken with him multiple times. He's a generally great guy but a piss poor journalist. His initial claims to fame were videos where he made outrageous claims using strawman arguments such as Infinity Ward was influenced by Killzone. He's the amateur journalist that people get annoyed with in that he'll take the one strand of possibility and report it as fact.

What's annoyed most people about him is that he doesn't get it. He makes excuses on why he took the first couple paragraphs of an article from another site, put a "shout out to <blank>.com" but had the byline read "Written by HiphopGamer." Then proclaimed himself the greatest journalists because a few of his rumors ended up being true. I run a small site and multiple rumors that I've reported on came true as well, that's what you do if you report on games properly.

In the end, he's a nice guy but he's been given a pass by many people then once people start to really hold him to his past actions, it's just excuses and a constant stream of how he's a nice guy.

If you want some to represent games it SHOULDN'T be someone who (currently) works in the industry. It should be a fan/player that has shown to further the cause of games in their environment and has proven to have a positive impact on the face of games.

I don't like either one.

Why don't you like Marcus Beer? His positions are pro consumer and he's been on the money on just about everything. Or do you mean you don't like him as a person?

His complaint about lack of marketing for Sony exclusives is identical to GAF's complaints. Identical.

It's not like the ECA is (was?) a particularly reputable organization anyway. How they're still a thing after the whole disastrous situation with CheapAssGamers is beyond me.

If the Hip hop gamer think that using a character shtick makes him a good journalists then he's sorely mistaken.

A good journalists doesn't use a character gimmick to get his point across and Marcus was right to call him out.

The same goes for anyone who thinks that they are a reviewer and use a character gimmick, you aren't a "reviewer" but merely an entertainers.

Also who are the ECA?

Speaking of stealing bags - how about the Intel/Pachter E3 '12 party where HHG and his friends made off with a few dozen Intel/Razer gift bags? Talk about poor form...
