F-ZERO (SNES) is 30 cents FEB 20th to MAR 21st on the Wii U eShop

man this game is great

The only 2D F-Zero I had played previously was the GBA version and I really didn't like it at all. I'm glad that it seems to be a problem exclusive to Maximum Velocity, because F-Zero SNES is super fun.

if you weren't tapping the accelerator while taking a corner, then that was the problem.
once you learn that, it handles a lot like the SNES game.
the devs made a bad job at making that mechanic required to play well (the game itself teaches it to you if you leave the game running at least)

Because you're in Europe.

On another note, it's a shame the Wii U doesn't add leaderboards to VC titles, but we do at least have Miiverse screenshot posting to show proof of our times. Perhaps some form of GAF leaderboard could be bodged together?

Maybe so, I'll give it another try :p

What's up with people who want to play (or don't mind playing) in slow motion because that's how they played it back then? I guess they wouldn't care if movies they watched as a child were released on Blu-Ray in crappy VCR quality as well?

Downloading now.

At least something worthwhile happened in the past 24 hours. ;)

Let us know what you think. Turns out the compression artifacts on the Gamepad are a bit of a dealbreaker for me. Gonna be playing it on the TV.

Man, I really need one of those new fancy controllers.

Some people just like to be backwards I guess.
Been talking about this somewhere else and besides them being highly misinformed and thinking they got the better version due to PAL having a slightly higher resolution (despite games almost never using them, thus black bars), their only reasoning seems to be: because I played it like that before. :-/

I'm actually fearing that those kinds of idiots might ruin it for all the rest of us in the end.

I don't have time for those people. As long as they don't get Nintendo to change their mind back to releasing 50hz games, anyway.

Only played the first cup on the gamepad right now since I'm sick at home and in bed right now. Doesn't seem to bother me that much tbh.
I do notice when there's patched of dirt on the road, that they blur together starting at a certain distance. Not sure if that's because of the lack of scan lines or not.
Otherwise everything seems fine.
TV play is naturally preferred, but then again, being able to play these games in bed is a huge plus for me. :)

For the first time on the Wii U, I'm getting some major compression artifacts when playing this game on the gamepad. Other than that, feels great.

I'm seeing this as well. It must be the extremely busy backgrounds that makes it difficult to compress well. Oh well...I normally play on a TV anyways.

Also, I was looking through the data management settings of the Wii U and noticed that F-Zero only takes up around 8 MB (not including the save data), which is strange because the download was 39 MB. Balloon Fight has a similar discrepancy between download size and storage size. I wonder where those extra megabytes go?

As much as I like the 30ct it costs now, the 7,99€ it will cost after the promotion period seem rather high to me.

That's how I feel about almost all of the games in this promotion except Super Metroid which is so damn good it's still worth at least $30, let alone 30 cents.

So who's going to be first to post their Mute City time? Let's get the ball rolling!
(I would but I am at work :( )

btw, I added some money onto my eshop, can that be used in the wii shop as well?

Afraid not..

First run, there's room for improvement :p

It is that transparent grad-filter they used to create the psuedo-effect of the road coming faster at you. Seems to wig out the system, even at slow speeds. I've played a few cups but eventually it became too noticable for me, like I've got a cataract. This game will likely be the exception given all the bitzy filigree that populates the track....not too worried about it.

I am very impressed how SNES VC looks at the 1080 upscale. Nice, nice quality.

Posted this in the older Wii U VC thread before seeing F-Zero had one of its own:

I notice the scaling is much less blurry on F-Zero than Balloon Fight. I wonder if this is a general change for the better, whether their scaling settings will be different for different systems, or something else.

Based on F-Zero not taking up full height of the TV screen in 1080p, I'm guessing it uses a cleaner-than-bilinear 4.5x scaling in each direction for an 1152x1008 image. HOWEVER, on the Gamepad it's taking the full height. If that full height is 480, that would make its scaling more like 2.143x. Much less even, and it shows in that the Gamepad image looks worse.

I saw a kid post on Miiverse asking if this is the game that Captain Falcon came from. Then I realized F-Zero is 23 years old, and I wanted to punch that kid for making me feel old (I'm 29). Grumble grumble </oldmanrant>

As I recall, isn't Captain Falcon not even mentioned in the game? Rather, like a lot of things back then, it was up to the instruction manual to add flavour to the game.

But then I wonder if it was the same in Japan. A lot of western manuals were just plain batshit insane (Super Mario Bros. having people turned to bricks), or did NoJ really like NoA's naming and then adopt it back.. Hm.

So this is actually 60Hz in Europe? Was the Wii VC version 60Hz as well or did Nintendo actually listen on this one?!

Captain Douglas Jay Falcon is on the F-Zero boxart. Just like Ness is on EarthBound's box!

They're like noticing a tiny Abraham Lincoln on the backside of memorial pennies.

At least in Europe, Balloon Fight was 576 scaled down on the Gamepad to 480. At least in my brief look at things.

The Gamepad is introducing JPEG artefacts in the streamed video, which is unfortunate. Not the end of the world but it'd be nice if they could tweak that out.

They listened!

Picked this up last night and played for about an hour on the gamepad. Game seems harder than i remember and I couldn't even finish the knight cup :(

Stupid ai seems to crowd you and make it almost impossible to not get bumped into the wall. Fucks me up every time. But I have no doubts I'll get the hang of it again soon enough.

Bought, at 30 cents, it's a steal. Still fun, but make me wish there is online multiplayer. Also, all other drivers are jerks, pushing me against the wall.
