Well I downloaded a demo from the eShop and shut off the WiiU, the standby color changes to red initially so I thought it wasn't working at first but it changed to orange after a minute or so.

I don't hear any fans being powered on though :0

Hmm, maybe they made it so it checks if there's any spotpass/ download stuff and then it downloads the data if there is and if there isnt it shuts back off instead of like the Wii where it checked all the time.

Prior to this update, I was unable to stream "high quality" for videos in the eShop. This seems to be fixed as I can now maintain the required buffer needed to play videos in high quality without interruption.

As a few others have alluded to and posted time results, exiting back to the menu from anything is much faster now. Everything else is only marginally faster, particularly launching apps. Of course, I'll take what I can get.

I think my biggest problem is that, like the 3DS, there are certain apps that should ALWAYS be loaded into memory, that should come up INSTANTANEOUSLY.

For example, why is Notifications its own app that isn't always loaded into memory, and why do I have to wait and launch into it to read these three word notifications? Could you imagine if your phone or Facebook was like that?

Things still need to get way better to get to that 5 second and under mark. Bring on the Summer update. My new expectations is that it'll get almost everything within the 10 seconds it takes to close apps.

Homebrew Channel still works on the vWii.

Yeah, this is never going to change. The Wii's update infrastructure is completely different from the Wii U. They would have to push a update for the Wii side specifically in order to try and get rid of the HBC again. They've stopped updating the Wii for years, I see no reason for them to care about being able to access the HBC on the Wii side with limited features.

WHAT THE FUCK!

Seriously after unplugging my console, replugging it back in and restarting the update I'm at the exact same spot. WiiU logo in the bottom right corner getting no where. Seriously this is insane

The difference is WiiConnect24 would connect to the internet every minute or so for the entire duration it was in standby, so it could keep the News and Forecast Channels, etc. up to date, as well as receive messages. The Wii U however will only be connected when downloading a game or something so the wi-fi adapter isn't going to be used near constantly.

strange issue none the less I was never able to make time to play my Wii as much as I am playing and paying attention to the issues the Wii U has so good thing this is not Connect24 but I can see Nintendo bringing back those kinds of apps someday

I just noticed that my RED LED off light is much smaller now that I have that new thing enabled

Will this not check for auto updates?

I can confirm this. It's a true native system-wide setting. Netflix, basically everything asides Wii Mode resizes according to the setting.

This next part is a bit hard to explain... but WiiStreetU along the WiiU VC games had already added black borders to make the display look fine on TV's with overscan. This means since the setting is now system-wide, you'll see those black borders until they update those apps.

Other things like Runner2 which allowed you to resize the screen already will need to be set to the max so it displays accordingly.

FINALLY!!!!!!!! It only took 6 months! Thanks for confirming! I play VC games on the pad so not worried.

On another note why 600mb in size?

Tested loading a game and leaving a game definately faster.

System settings to Wii U menu not improved or that I could notice.

Will test other things later.

Cheers happy fast Wii U buddys!!

So the only thing they sped up majorly was returning to the home screen.

Launching stuff still needs more speed.

Main menu is almost instant though.

And now you can open an app or a game when it is selected by pressing A (before you had to touch on the screen).

I did that today before the update, AFAIK it's always been there.

Never worked on mine, And I would try to do it every time I would open a game... Weird... :x

The way it worked (previously anyway) was that you could tap on the touch screen to open it, but pressing A would do nothing, UNTIL you pressed a direction on the analog stick or d-pad to "activate" the cursor, then A would launch the highlighted icon.

You'll be done in less than half that time I'm sure. ;)

I hope you're right :(
Either way I'm screwed and I'll have to wait for it to finish downloading since I can't stop it but it's ok I guess. Have some homework to do. I'll check it in a few hours :)

Returning to the home screen from settings still took a while, but from games back to the home screen it was pretty fast. Least it's a start!

My friend just texted me - not joking - that after updating, exiting a game is slightly faster, but that the splash screens prior to a game launch have gone from the previous ~15 sec to ~45 sec each. He's FURIOUS. Any other talk of this? Sounds like a major screw-up.

You turned off your Wii U during an update? :|

No, he restarted like the system told him to and it was going to install the update BUT it never got to the install screen; it froze instead which forced him to hard reset the console (unplug the system).

What this man said, then I went to the system settings option hit update WiiU, waited another 30 minutes for the thing to download, got to the exact same spot and had to hard reset again. This is now the 3rd time I'm downloading the update

I am downloading the rayman app and putting the wii-u on stand-by.
But it doesn't seem to download further in standy-mode, according to the description my power-light suppose to shine orange ? Or is there a separate stand-by mode ?
Does anyone have the same problem ?

EDIT

NEVERMIND it works like a charm it took some time, sweet !!!

Launching games takes <10 seconds for me.

sounds bad regardless would hate a hardlock during install not sure you can recover from that I would have waited for an error message but sounds broken

Are you hitting the restart button on the gamepad screen after the update installs?

I waited 20 minutes the first time before hard resetting, 10 minutes the second time same thing :/

I dunno why but I've had issues with my WiiU and the internet lately. Most of the time it's fine but randomly it simply won't connect to my router even if I'm the only person home.

There was no button, it was simply a blank screen that said WiiU in the bottom right corner both on the gamepad and on the tv screen.

Did you have to start the update again or was it automatic?

In the download manager it said "no updates" but my system is still under 2.1.3 firmware when I check in the system settings. Completely breaking my balls I don't want to leave this on over night -.-

how long do you wait when you unplugged?

this is your 3rd download so the last two froze the same way? I would have just given up on updating could be a bad code we are not sure we are all downloading from the same servers

I would file the issue with Nintendo Support before continuing to force it if it keeps doing the same thing do you have a disc in the drive?

Don't look in the download manager. Go to the Settings app and click on the system update tab, then check for updates.

I dunno I thought I was up to date, I play online with MH3U all the time unless the WiiU doesn't force you to update when you play online?

It does not there was a small update at the beginning of the month which people thought could have been the spring update

we were at 2.2 I think could have remembered this wrong but I think you missed 1 dude it does not update auto games update auto in the background Firmware you need to watch it well until 3.0.0

Thanks, but don't laugh at the poor guy. I assure you, he's not lying or joking. He'll probably have to send in the damn thing.

I was laughing that he said that aspect was "slightly faster".

There are functions of the OS that aren't faster or not much faster but going from a game to the home menus is a lot faster.

I just saw that part of the post, no idea what happened to his system.

My bad.
