Digital Foundry: Microsoft to unlock more GPU power for Xbox One developers

And on the flipside, If most people in here had a fair and unbiased opinion as to why they picked the PS4 to begin with he wouldn't feel the need to do so.

Most people in here lately hate on everything Xbox one simply because it's Microsoft. To hate an unreleased product this much is not normal.

I'm pretty sure that hate was earned from Kinect taking over first party focus, Microsoft's original Xbox One policies and communication, and discovering how much they put Kinect and multimedia over game hardware.

Mhm ok.

MS is totally innocent in all of this right?..

Buying the console that's more powerful and £80 cheaper is pretty fair and balanced ?

Hating on the choices a company makes =/= hating on the company

If MS had come out during the reveal and announced a 2+ TFLOP Xbox with a bunch of new/renewed exclusive IP's at a reasonable price, people would be fawning all over it.

I'm reminded of why threads like these tend to be cesspools. It's like watching Fox News. Anyone with any sense knows that isn't the Xbox One version of the game. That shit looks just about passable for current gen based on those shots. Even GTA V on 360 and PS3 has superior looking water. Anyway, last post in this thread. It has dissolved into blatantly misleading comparisons. :)

You mean, like comparing Fox News to this thread? Go watch MSNBC or something, you liberal monster.

It's still a bunch of hate for a product that most people have not even tried yet nor have the ability to purchase. The simple fact that most people in here have already made a decision regarding two products that have not even been released yet says a lot about the people.

People are using XBO's "display panes" as a hardware advantage? LOL.

Since when is rendering the actual game in sub HD an advantage? The XBO is too weak to fully render games in 1080p and thus will resort to split resolutions - 1080p HUD, 900p or whatever for the game itself. The IQ of the game will invariably suffer. It's like putting paper over the cracks. There are no two ways to put it.

If there is one thing about SenjutsuSage, he sure is dedicated.

The Xbox One, as per all publicly available information, has a number of dedicated hardware units that I see devs getting better at making use of for their specific purposes over time. This isn't about secret sauce bs, which I'm pretty sure is where trolls want to take this one.

-- The 3 display planes, 2 of which I think are available to devs. They seem pretty helpful for dynamic resolutions and could possibly have interesting uses for LOD purpose.

-- The 4 move engines, 2 of which comes with hardware specifically designed for LZ decompression and compression. Beyond that they seem pretty crucial for better leveraging the system's ESRAM and saving bandwidth wherever possible, so this seems like one of the more obvious aspects of the Xbox One that devs will possibly become better at making use of as they get more experience with the system. 3 of these are directly available to developers, whereas one is reserved for use by the system and appears automatically managed through Direct3D helping with specific game operations.

-- The SHAPE audio block, something devs have full access to, is another thing I can see devs using better with time, especially since it can help by offloading from the CPU some processing requirements as it pertains to audio. The LZ compression and decompression hardware on the move engines are also something that can help the CPU.

So no matter how you look at it, this is a fair bit of dedicated hardware that's directly under the control of game developers. Common sense suggests that developers will become smarter about how they use these things over the life of the Xbox One. To think otherwise would be ludicrous, and this in no way suggests a belief in magical, secret sauce hardware. Fact is they're all in there and available to developers for a reason. Expecting Xbox One developers to have a full grasp on how best to use all of this on day one would be like expecting PS4 developers to make full use of the PS4's 8 ACEs and all that potential for Compute on day one. Beyond the customizations available on both machines, devs won't even have it all figured out on the best way to take advantage of the CPU, GPU and memory system of each machine. It just so happens that on the Xbox One in particular, one of the main customizations of the hardware seems especially crucial to getting the most out of the memory system. PS4 devs obviously have far less of a challenge in that regard, but it's a challenge that I think Xbox One devs will manage to easily come to grips with.

we've been here before SenjutsuSage, why do you keep bringing all this up again?

- PS4 has two display planes. If you aren't doing live TV overlay you don't need the third. Both machines are very capable of running a lower resolution game and a full HD HUD. Personally I'd rather they didn't, but later in the generation I'm sure each pixel will end up heavy enough that resolutions will drop

- the move engines aren't special, they're just DMA units. I think PS4 has two, so Xbox has a couple more. And PS4 has LZ decompression too. They're still sharing the limited DDR3 bandwidth, and you still have to manage them manually. They will help keep the esram filled but scheduling moves will be an overhead for devs to deal with

The fundamental point being that these things are hoops that devs have to jump through simply to partially overcome some of the limitations of having slower ram and fewer CUs in the first place. At best - if devs use ESRAM brilliantly and schedule the move engines to work in harmony like synchronised swimmers - you still end up with less RAM bandwidth and fewer GPU resources (and a headache)

thats true...very common argument that people make that the Xbone uses "customized" hardware, while the PS4 uses "off the shelf" hardware...

I would challenge those making that argument to kindly find me an AMD part# for the PS4's "off the shelf" GPU for me to purchase...

the PS4's CPU and GPU (particularly GPU) is just as customized as the Xbone's...however the Xbone requires more exotic "dedicated" hardware in an attempt to remedy the fact that you're dealing with significantly less powerful hardware, and a significantly lower RAM bandwidth...

personally i can't wait to play games on both consoles..but its quite clear the PS4 is the more powerful of the two...its only a matter of what the gap is going to look like in the real world...
The craziest part about the "more customized" argument is that the fine grain compute customizations on PS4 are more advanced than abything in XBO and even high end PC GPUs don't have that kind of control when it comes to GPU compute.

This confirms my suspicions. The XBO is too weak to fully render games in 1080p and thus will resort to split resolutions - 1080p HUD, 900p or whatever for the game itself.

Leave it to Senjutsu Sage to come up with nonsense like that. Its really sad how far some people go to defend a brand that they love. If i hadn't known any better, i would have assumed that he worked for microsoft. He makes misterxmedia look like an amateur.

i think your underestimating a lot of people...had MS come out an revealed a console that was more powerful than the PS4, and not completely FUBAR'd their consumer relations messege...things would be very different...

its not always simply a hate of MS...its their initial policies, and the fact that their console is weaker and more expensive...do you not remember 2006??

I will wait for retail game comparisons before I gloat.

EDIT: Wtf, that doesn't even look like the same game, are we sure it's not a PS3/Xbox 360 version?

So Senju should Senju it up because some PS4 fans are unfairly biased towards being PS4 fans?

Senju is bringing balance to NeoGaf...?

The truth is, Gaf is unbalanced towards preferring PS4 for real reasons, and not purely because of hidden fan boy biases.

There's no way this can be real. I'm all for the PS4 and Sony this generation, but is development and hardware on the Xbox One this bad?

Those are screengrabs from a compressed video showing unsourced material from an unfinished game.. They're meaningless for comparison purposes.

I think GameTrailers has some new single player footage, they will release it in October. Can't wait!
Yup Gt.Tv aww yeah

----------------------------------------------
On another Note do you guys think that because Kinect is no longer manditory that devs will decide not to use it in their games thus making MS eventually have the extra % of power used for the Kinect available for games... Of course it wouldn't be major boost but I'm curious if they would do so none the less

Compression? The water looks like night and day between the two shots. Lighting on the ship is slightly different, too.

look back at GAF at PS3's E3 announcement with the price. Look at the shit Sony got for that.

This is a gaming forum. Are you suprised that a machine focusing on games, that is more powerful (and therefore offers more potential for devs to tap to make better games) is getting positive comments? And that a company that until recently was trying to prevent you trading in games and requiring you to be online (and then couldn't get a straight message out) is getting criticised?

We have a clear view of the technology on offer - both from Sony and MS directly and from leaks, and it is obvious one has a more efficient architecture AND more power AND is cheaper. Does being a fan of that really make you a fanboy?

I'd argue that those who close their ears and blindly criticise others without a meaningful argument to back it up are the real fanboys.

If all we we know we was that one was called the Xbox One and one was called the PS4, yes, it would be very odd that so many people had chosen already, even if you ignore general sentiment toward 1st party games, online offerings etc.

But that isn't the case. We know the price, the specs, a bunch of games, and MS has had the worst PR in games since Sony in 2005/6. With all that, no, it's not odd at all that so many have chosen.

No i don't think that being a fan of something necessarily makes someone a fanboy, I do understand preferences. I have them. But in an ideal world, people try things before liking or dismissing them.

Key word is ideal. The world we live is nothing like that. Why do you think bullying exists? People are quick to judge.

Not at all. I think you are ignoring the gulf in power between the two consoles. It is bigger than most people think. It's no surprise to me more people are inclined towards the PS4 for that reason alone. 1. More powerful. 2. More cheaper. Also, I think most people here are unlikely to forget how Microsoft revealed the Xbox One and it's 'consumer friendly' policies. Bad PR after bad PR isn't going to help matters at all.
