No, I don't believe it's a design decision. It's Sony's OS team just being a bunch of boobs. We still can't change our PSN name, and now we can't even customize the background of the console home screen. This is amateur hour bullshit, and it's sad to see it happening in 2013.

They had it on the ps3 so how can it possibly be something other than a design decision if this is in fact true? Also I don't remember X1 being able to change your wallpaper. I could be wrong. Either way this sucks.

I just want to point out that this is word for word the same argument that people used to defend Microsoft's slow creep of ads into the old xbox interface frontpage, and it's as ridiculous now as it was then.

I just recently changed my PS3 theme to the Journey concept art one. Now it looks sort of brown and transitiony instead of sparkly and wavy.
I mean, it's nice to be able to do that, but, eh.

I'll be sad if the default background isn't as good as the PS3 one though. I like the sparkly waviness and particularly how it changes color by time of day.
As long as I think things look nice I don't really see a reason why I'd wanna change them.

The lack of customisation doesn't concern me that much since you can hardly ever see custom backgrounds behind all these ugly, clunky Metro style interfaces, what it is of bigger concern is that a feature which is completely taken for granted in this day and age is missing from the launch firmware. It begs the question, if something as minor as that isn't there just what state is the firmware in?

  1. More games for PS4 than Xbox One
  2. Wrong, pause/resume is in, suspend/resume is coming later (this is turning off your console and saving the current state of the game for quick boot back into the software)
  3. Wrong, nobody is forcing you to buy PS Plus+, also most features do not require it, unlike Xbox Live
  4. Wrong, you can play games without patching the console, unlike Xbox One

Oh. So you can pause the game and go back to UI for example and then return to game ?

Pause/Resume, Suspend/Resume are two entirely different things ?

Remember how because the ps2 didnt have wallpapers, boy didn't that console suck?, ha even my pc back then had wallpapers, lol at the ps2, stupid console, lol even my pc played games online properly back day one that the ps2 came out.

yeah now the ps4 is going to suck as hard as the ps2

I guess this is disappointing, but then I fully expect the full HD dynamic themes they'll offer on the PSN to be pretty awesome.

I still have the default theme on my PS3 but it's all about having options. I seriously hope they allow it in the future, pretty disappointing if they don't

Yes, they are completely different. You can switch from game to UI to app, to game, no problem. Turning off your console and putting it into "low-power" mode where it keeps a saved state of your game in memory so you can boot it up quickly and continue, is coming later.

I'm def not sold on the PS4 OS yet. Seems very cluttered, and a mishmash of every modern style crammed into one.

you can't really compare the ps2 to the ps4 because the user interface is on another level.

True. Most consumer electronics back then didn't even have user interfaces suitable for custom wallpapers. Hell, handhelds didn't even have actual operating systems at the time.

They are probably busy with making sure the os works on day 1. What would you rather have: hourly crashes/hang ups or custom backgrounds

i've been begging for over 5 years.
I haven't read much in this topic so I'm unsure if it's been already covered but I at least hope that I'm able to change the background color away from the blue. I would much rather have a solid black background. Admittedly I don't care much about custom wallpapers as I've never used them with my PS3 but I do understand the concern of not having the option to. Options are always good things and to remove the option is a bit concerning.

I don't recall seeing any real in depth analysis of the PS4 OS outside of a couple of PR spots and ysop up on stage with it. I'd really like to see more regarding the functionality of the OS. If anyone has any video links and would mind sharing I'd appreciate it.

On the XB1 you do have some control over the OS style and color scheme. Check out this video, which shows two different versions of people logging into the system.

no, that would be stupid...it's not a stupid question at all, and the response is certainly not.

the reason this is a thread worthy of the complaints is because there's no legitimate reason for this. Its a small subtle customization feature that if not present, can only be assumed to be a design choice for premium skins. Which is pretty bogus.

if this is really just something not high on the priority list--Shu should have just said "not at this time" his english is very good...this isn't some lost in translation issue...

Here's a weird thought - if the backgrounds automatically change based on the game you're looking at (in the system or the store), it could be that there isn't much use for a custom background - because it's always changing contextually to reflect where you are and what you're doing. There may be far fewer 'dead zones' contextually and they're specifically and dynamically changing backgrounds to reflect your actions in the UI.
