Ayer explains why he's making Gotham City Sirens instead of SS2, teases more CC2018

I went to look if this still existed after the DCEU slate reveal, especially since a lot of people were asking, and apparently the answer is yes.

When we asked Ayer why he chose to tell this story, as opposed to a direct sequel to Suicide Squad, he responded, "It's a story about three fantastic women who're trying to find their way in the world, and realize that they have more power together than they do individually." He added, "I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit."

The Gotham City Sirens comic, written by Batman: The Animated Series' creator Paul Dini, follows the trio of Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy, and their adventures around Gotham City. We pressed him on whether Harley Quinn, who will once again be played by Margot Robbie, will switch up her iconic look. Ever the professional, Ayer replied, "Let's put a pin in that. Maybe next Comic-Con." He did tease a bit, adding, "Everybody evolves."

It's weird this wasn't mentioned, especially since this interview took place before the WB panel today so it almost seemed like a sure thing it would appear.

Obviously means there are movies that didn't get a logo that are in production.

All you 12 Cyborg fans can rejoice.

Maybe she'll evolve past the Joker in the story? Too much to hope for?

I do think we'll see Harley evolve beyond the Joker and more as her own person.

Plus, seeing as how GCS is going to involve Harley teaming up with Ivy, I'm hoping that will eventually result in a cinematic showcase of Harley's other iconic (and relatively healthier) romance.

I read that comment about his daughters as the female version of "I have black friends".

Was going to say after how Harley was walking around in booty shorts the entire time...

More ass shots would of helped his point more!

Hoping they take WW to heart with the idea going forward. Harley is popular with women and I know her Ivy relationship is one of the big things going for her. Better outfit, character, less gratuitous camera work.

Given how poorly written and characterized Harley was in SS, I'm not really convinced that this man is the right person to tell the stories of three women simultaneously.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
The whole Suicide Squad 2 or Gotham City Sirens situation is weird. Ayer jumped off Scarface because of scheduling and tweeted out that photo of Black Mask, which made it seem like he's ready for Gotham Sirens. But then the panel hits and we hear about Suicide Squad 2, which makes sense for the WB. After SS, Warner Bros would want that ready for 2018, no question. But zero on Gotham City Sirens.

Ayer doing a take on strong female characters should be...interesting.

I can't wait for him to mishandle my favourite female comic book characters whilst utilizing them in a vaguely pornographic fashion!

I hope this movie ends up being better written than SS. Gotham City siren can be a big hit if done right especially with how popular Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman are to the female audience.

If Harley evolves into a strong independent woman to ride that Wonder Woman train of badassery, it's gonna clash hard with all the "daddy's little monster" fans.

I look forward to it.

So who is running Suicide Squad 2? Or is he doing both?

Right now it's looking like Jaume Collet-Serra for Suicide Squad 2 (Non-Stop, Run All Night, The Shallows). Not confirmed yet.

Personally not thrilled by Ayer on GCS. He can be a hit or miss director, and Suicide Squad was a huge miss, but it's mostly that he doesn't seem well suited for the material.

All I can hope for is for Ayer to do his research this time, and don't be afraid to take ideas from the comics, or the animated series/movies.

i see nothing wrong
Making media like that and saying it's with your daughters in mind is akin to when the director of Sucker Punch said it was a movie about feminism...or when Kojima said Quiet is supposed to be the antithesis to women in gaming. As in, these aren't characters who're written for women to look up to. So at best, that sorta thing sounds disingenuous.

Don't do a giant beam of light and questionable villains.

He talked about his regrets with going that direction with the villain. And I think he teased Black Mask as the villain.

A hypothetical GCS where the plot is Selina stealing something valuable from Black Mask, and it somehow ropes in Ivy and Harley, who all gets hits called out on them? That could work.

I don't believe Ayer and i don't believe you had control on that set with all those egos..

I watched SS again, and it looked like he just went with the flow, there were some good acting, but mostly bad acting all the way through this movie...

Wouldn't surprise me if that's the route they take.

I do wonder if they'll go for the HarleyIvy romance in the DCEU though. I really hope they do go in that direction, for a number of reasons.

Though if Ayer is helming that, I hope he approaches the matter respectfully and with tact (along with Harley, Ivy and Selina in general).
