Probably Taxi Driver, but in terms of sheer enjoyment, it's a tie between that and The Departed.

Who's That Knocking At My Door deserves a special mention for how weird it is at times.

Gangs of New York is my favorite, but Goodfellas is probably his best.

I can appreciate what he did with Raging Bull when it comes to film making, but that was one of the most boring films I've ever watched.

I haven't seen half of his filmography but out of his most well known Taxi Driver is probably the most innovative, ambitious and interesting film, Goodfellas is infinitely rewatchable, and Casino is a bloated rehash.

Scorsese's movies have a tendency to age well, but the ones that I can watch over and over without getting tired of them are Goodfellas, The Departed and Color of Money.

I guess those three are the "best". If I had to choose one then it will be Goodfellas.

1. Goodfellas
2. Taxi Driver
3. Raging Bull
4. The King of Comedy
5. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Unfortunately, most of his post-Goodfellas work has been increasingly bloated and bizarrely unessential. I hope Wolf of Wall Street breaks that streak.

For some reason I only enjoy half of his movies before Gangs of New York. From that movie onward, it's all top 5 of the year material with Hugo and the Departed being my favourite movie of the year they came out. Of his older movies, some are movies I find pretty average for whatever reason. Raging Bull is probably considered the best of his movies that I just can't enjoy. I've given that movie 6/10 in IMDB but even that rating has one or two points extra just because it's a classic and I "have" to like it.

As for this topic in question, it's hard to decide between Casino, Goodfellas, Hugo, The Departed and Shutter Island. I consider Goodfellas the best movie out of those five, but my favourite right now is probably Shutter Island. Or Hugo.

So many good movies. I'm partial to Raging Bull, Goodfellas (but Godfather for life and it's not even close), Casino and Gangs of New York. More recent, The Departed is a damn good movie too.

I keep seeing you post this and I gotta ask. Have you seen The Age of Innocence? I wouldn't classify that as 'unessential'. Also Kundun and Bringing Out the Dead (though these are still lesser Scorsese).

Taxi Driver. Great atmosphere. The Bernard Hermann soundtrack. The grimy weirdness of NYC 1970s. De Niro at his best. That date to the porno theater with Cybill Shepherd. Albert Brooks. The final shoot-out.
