Wow, this is the first Nintendo console I'm looking askance at from day 1. The Wii's spotty legacy really left a bad taste in my mouth.
While I know there will eventually be Wii U games I'll want to play, aspects of the console are looking unappealing right now. I think it's a shame that they didn't try to be in the same ballpark as the upcoming consoles from Sony and MS in terms of processing power. It would have been nice if owning a Nintendo console didn't mean you're a generation behind so that you have to buy another machine to play technologically "current" games.
I have two Wiis because the OD drive on the first one failed. I'd considered sending it to Nintendo to be fixed but they couldn't guarantee they wouldn't wipe my saves and some of them could not be transferred (MHTri for example). Eventually I bought the drive online and fixed it myself some time after I'd bought the second Wii. I didn't delete my saves. Then I had to hack the second Wii to play Xenoblade because NOA was being idiotic.
So, over the last generation, Nintendo managed to turn a rather loyal customer into someone who's quite disgusted with the company. With this implementation of the NNiD, they are not off on the right foot. I thought it was unfortunate that they tied the account to a particular console but that's not atypical of penny-pinching Nintendo. However, the fact that there is no way to transfer your account is just stupid. Consoles do break and I'd be pretty pissed to lose my library.
So, if I eventually pick up a Wii U, I won't be buying anything from the e-shop. It's time for Nintendo to stop being so anti-consumer. Its cute mascots belie its corporate personality.
