I don't know what's so magical about the Spanish flu, World War 1, the violence during the Russian Revolution, the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the constant recession until World War 2... Makes the problems of the early 2000s practically minute in comparison.

This one is tough, it won a Pulitzer prize but only the little girl survived. There was a fire in the apartment complex and the fire escape failed while they were trying to get to safety. A newspaper photographer captured it and AFAIK there was a huge debate on whether or not to run the photo in the newspaper.

I knew of the historical background of Feldherrenhalle, but seeing this photo makes the place a lot more scary somehow..

This is the first "clear" image ever transmitted from the surface of Mars. The Viking 1 image was taken only a few minutes after the landing. Engineers decided to program the probe to quickly take and send an image of a footpad (in this case footpad number 3) because it was feared that earlier Soviet probes, which stopped transmitting shortly after touchdown, may have sank into quicksand. If Viking 1 met the same fate, they wanted to know about it this time. Some speculate that the cloudiness on the left side is due to dust left over from the landing. The cameras scanned one vertical strip at a time such that by the time the scanning moved to the center of the image, the dust had allegedly settled. The large rock near the center is about 10 cm across.

It's not fake, but it was staged and edited (the flag was not edited in, it was actually there).
Also, it's the Reichstag in Berlin, not Stalingrad.

They tried 2 times to put the flag, first one was on April 30th at night, so they couldn't take the photo. germas fight back and finally on May 2d they took the picture. The edit was small, they only ereased a watch.
