We also think it’s a very elegant solution because if you’ve taken your switch on the go, you’ve put yourself in a hotspot, you’re looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of bulky, gamer headset is a bit of a challenge.

Dear lord, this makes Reggie look a decade out-of-touch. Bulky gamer headset? There are a multitude of small, combination, earbuds + microphone sets available. Every damned Apple iPhone comes with a pair. Sure the quality of those sets are all over the place but they're hardly bulky.

What's really dumb is that most people will probably end up using either a bluetooth headset or one of those smaller ear bud combos to attach to their phone anyway. Silly me for wanting to just plug in a pair of my old universal PSP ear buds + microphones and wanting to use them directly on the Switch without needing to jump through hoops on a completely separate device.

There's so much to like about the Switch but this is the one aspect that flabberghasts and irritates me.

Is this some ham-fisted attempt to please investors who want them to go mobile?

Only reason I can think of that doesn't make Nintendo look like imbeciles...

Literally the worst online setup ever and they're asking for money for it.

I'm not even sure I want to keep my preorder.:(

This just cements my decision to wait on getting a Switch until the holidays. Not a chance this MP/online service does not end up being a complete shit show.

This thing won't have anything in besides the games on it, right? Not even friends list, web browser, or even eShop. Everything will be done on an external platform.

Dont we already have a thread about this, still currently on the front page, from right after the reveal from last week. Obviously this is a new article, but it doest say really anything new or different.

No bald cap? Lies!
I'm so glad I don't give a shit about online multiplayer, but for the success of the system what the fuck are they doing?

This really better be the coolest fucking app out there.

It'd be complete insanity if you can't do matchmaking regularly in games without a smartphone. I would like to think it's only implied as a party chat kind of thing which is still stupid. At least having the option on the Switch would be nice.

How does something like this even work?

I'm guessing you sync your phone to your Switch via the app. And while you play the game, the phone connects to a network that handles all the back-end stuff.

But who the fuck really knows but Nintendo at this point :/

How many people are really gonna go out and decide to sit down/party up for some Splatoon on coffee shop wifi?

The eShop is definitely there. But it looks like there won't be a web browser on Day 1.

matchmaking? so, there is no online at all when you dont have a (compatible) smartphone?
why would they outsource the matchmaking to another device?

>Nintendo makes porn for handheld enthusiasts
>Markets it as a console
>Nintendos up everything else as usual

This whole thing is so bizarre.

I've said it a thousand times, but Nintendo doesn't seem to understand that you can do two things at once. You can have this setup and still have a traditional online setup. Just as you can have trophies and still have stickers. But nope, they have to do it their way. They just have to be different for the sake of being different.

I also think it’s a very cumbersome solution because if I've left my switch at home, I've put myself in my home wifi hotspot, I'm looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of smartphone headset combination sitting on the sofa next to me is a bit of a challenge.

So I think I’ve got a cumbersome solution. That’s a very specific answer to your question.

Fucking hell. I'm feeling great about pretty much every other aspect of the Switch but this. I'm gonna keep an open mind, but it sounds really stupid.
