What's with all the hate? I came into that video fully expecting it to be the worst abomination of anything ever shown to human eyes (thanks, GAF), but actually it looks fine to me. So what if it's not like every other Sonic game? Did everyone forget that the last two (arguably three) 3D Sonic games have been ass? I'm glad they're trying something different.

Usually I understand you guys, whether I agree or not, but this time I'm just lost...

Pfft, you know people have to fuss about something on these boards.

This game had better not have a shitty Sonic Team Rock soundtrack. I wonder if Shadow will be able to get different guns in the game? Sega also needs to get some tripped out voice overs.

Shadow - Luda
Knuckles - Mystikal (is he out of jail yet?) or Lil Jon
Eggman - Suge Knight or Fat Joe

If Sega could make a 3D Sonic game that was just Sonic levels or Sonic/Shadow levels from SA and SA2 respectively (not the exact levels, just stages like those), I'd buy the game. Even if it was pretty short, I'd buy it so I wouldn't have to sit through the other shit the 3D Sonics have been known to be plagued by.

Just...why.....I just want 2d Sonic - the terrible characters again....a gun.....Christ, what were they thinking? I was sort of hyped for Sonic Heroes, but this 3d shit is seriously ruining the Sonic name. Has there been a Sonic game since the Dreamcast era that was good?! I loved Sonic 2d. This idea of this game just reeks of stupidity....

A gun.....
You idiot. Do you really blame any kind of direction the narrative has taken on the 3D gameplay? Bullshit. The 2D Sonic games are extremely contrived and haven't evolved since the second Genesis title. People need to grow the fuck up.

The problem is that those games were ass due to unrealized gimmicks they forced on you. Now here comes a game that is based entirely around a gimmick, and a lame ass looking one at that. Really, that gun looks like it was photoshopped into those screensgrabs. Soooo out of place

Might not be so bad if they manage to still keep speeding around the focus, and allowing you to either shoot on the run or shoot in the air, land, and keep running. But looking at the other sonic games I just can't imagine them pulling it off. There will probably be roller coaster segments, then slow segments where you gotta stop and shoot, and this back and forth gameplay will probably be just like the character switching in Heroes and Sonic Adv 2. With the running being fun, and everything else boring stuff that you only go through to get back to the running

1) What's with all the hate? Handgun. Maybe 5% of the "hate" in this thread stems from the useage of Shadow or something, I dunno, but the vast majority if that they're creating a dark edgy came capped off (no pun intended) by a fucking glock. In a Sonic game.

2) Didn't they try something different with the last 3D Sonic game? And didn't you just call it ass? I don't think anyone here is against trying new things to invigorate a series. If the game didn't have a fucking pistol in it, I think this thread would be overly positive. The action looked pretty good when it came to the running, and the Sonic/Shadow levels were easily the best part of the first 2 SA's.

If SEGA had given him some sort of pulse or laser weapon or the ability to shoot lasers or fire, they'd have maybe 1/50th of the amount of people complaining.

They gave Shadow a fucking gun in a vain attempt at making the series mature. It's retarded. So very, very retarded.

This game will prolly sell better because it's more badass and there's guns.
I just wonder where is the cheesy female character receiving cheap upskirts plans??

Who knows? We know nothing other than the trailers IGN and 1Up have [both pretty badly compressed too].

As for the music, IMO Shadow had some fantastic music in Sonic Adventure 2. Both White Jungle and Radical Highway had some great tunes.

Yeah, Shadow had some good Techno/House music for some of his stages, but there was not enough of it to offset ST's Rock music.

So because Halo and GTA sell and Sonic does not they give him a fucking REAL-LIFE gun.

I still think it's April Fools joke, too stupid to be true.

Next E3: Mario + baseball bat + hookers.

Start crying right now. Sega wants to kill Sonic franchise for good. They simply can't make this game 3D. It's very sad. I would have had thousands of idea for a great 3D Sonic that would feel as great as Sonic3 but i ain't working there and who gives a shit about the guy next door's ideas...

I've loved Sonic since Day 1. Even the past few years I've enjoyed, to the best of my ability, the 3D Sonic games, though they always seemed to be lacking. However, this just all seems strange. They might as well go all Conker's Bad Fur Day with the Shadow game and use that as the "mature" spin-off to the Sonic games. Throw in Knuckles for a little buddy flick action. Too bad it seems it won't be going in that direction either. Just seems like a Sonic game w/ a gun (Guess 'cause it is.). Really, though, going strictly by the video, the graphics look bland and the concept seems strange to say the least (Why does a cartoon character have a realistic gun that doesn't match his style at all?), but I still have my hopes and I'll prob buy the game regardless. I also hope they change the style of the gun to something more fitting to the Sonic universe and somehow combine the speed and platforming of a Sonic game with the shooting elements of Ratchet and Clank. If I had my way, though, a new Sonic game, staring only Sonic, would be announced at E3 with a graphical style reminscent of the Sly games, gameplay in the vein of Klonoa 2 with the speed and attitude Sonic is known for. Sigh, Mario got to shine w/ Mario 64. When will Sonic get his true 3D time in the sun? Before I keep rambling in this sleepy state, I'm out. Dreams are where miracles come true.

It doesn't really make sense. Isn't arming a robot with a 45 caliber handgun kinda like arming a tank with a slingshot?

drohne

hyperbolically metafictive
i think shadow's an awful character -- sonic as SCARY MALL GOTH -- and that's enough to kill this game for me. but i don't understand why you're all freaking out over the gun. and i certainly don't understand why you wouldn't be freaking out over a laser gun or a pop-gun. gaf: ever hypersensitive to "pop culture sellouts."

Every game idea has it's short ends but are they adding anything new in this game other than a gun? If I was Sega I would have changed the formula and make it a next gen lauch title, now that would have sold atleast. Who the hell is going to care about this?

Seriously, are they adding anything new other than the retarded gun?

And even i am moderately surprised
"Next E3: Mario + baseball bat + hookers."

... of course!

I'm a HUGE Sonic fan...HUGE.

Loved the 2D games, didn't mind the 2 Adventure games, hated Heroes...

And I love this news. Why? I plan to make the next biggest Sonic title, and it'll only make mine look 100 times better, even if mine turned out to suck.

Sweet.

Geez, at least watch the video before you complain about the gun... The gameplay is a natural progression from the previous two Adventure titles. They're just combining the Sonic/Shadow speed platforming gameplay with the E-102 Gamma/Tails/Eggman/ shooter gameplay.

I repeat, this is not really a departure for the series. The E-102 Gamma robot played almost just like Shadow does in this video, and that was part of Sonic Adventure 1. I think the blending of the two styles could be really cool if carried off correctly. Something like a combination of Sonic and Sin & Punishment, though of course not quite up to the latter's standards of intensity.

The problem for me was not the concept of the game as much as the execution of the trailer.
All that "Or is he...?" nonsense was making me hear b-movie trailer voiceovers in my head. The game could be ok, and at least the title doesn't mention Sonic himself.

Knows the Score
As someone else said, the last two games were somewhat lacklustre. At least this looks interesting, if not a little stupid.

There shouldn't be any natural progression for this series. The shooting needs to go away (it wasn't BAD, but it wasn't particularly fun either). If I can go through the game and do the normal attacks Sonic and Shadow did in SA2, I'll be happy. I really don't want to stop the action to use the gun. That's my biggest worry.

i just played one of the later sonic GBA games and gotta say it has been one of the best sonics i have ever played. why can't they do a mixture of a 3-d/2-d combo of some sort?

Not nice to wake up to :(

Shadow is awesome. I really liked him in SA2. But that looks really... stupid.
Hopefully there's something else to this.

They could've just had him throw rings or something more ninja like! But maybe they worked the guns into the plot so it'll have some kind of importance or something...

So does this mean the game can't be Rated E?

drohne, would you mind pretending that Nintendo developed this game? The trailer just provides such wonderful material for your patented poetic diatribes and I'd hate for you to be reduced to "shadow's an awful character" since this is Sega. :\

I think people seriously overstate peoples dissapointment with the last 3 Sonic games.

Sonic Adventure was the first to try it, and people loved the Sonic & Tails levels. People wern't too happy with Amy, Big, Gamma or Knuckles' stages, but they were still fun [and only needed to be finished once anyhow]. The story was very good considering the other stories for platformers at the time, unfortunately the cutscenes were incredibly flawed.

Sonic Adventure 2 had some fantastic Sonic / Shadow levels. The last level is just absolutely crazy and needs your best reaction skills if you intend to beat it. To get an A in that is something you must master. Failing is almost always your fault, not the game. The Tails / Knuckles levels were extentions of Gamma and Knuckles' levels in SA1, but people got a bit sick of them, wanting a normal Sonic game. The music was IMO a bit up and down. I like the Butt Rock of Sonic and Shadows House music, but wasn't too much of a fan of Knuckles / Tails' music. Eggmans was good too.

Sonic Heroes basically gave you a simple 'Sonic game' with a twist, you could use different character abilities. if you're any good at the game, you can play the game with no problems. People gave up too easily on this game IMO. It gave you the fantasy levels people had been asking for, LONG levels [between 5-10 minutes long], as well as an upgrading system, and 5 different versions of each stage, all which you had to memorise. The music was great for the most part, a few [Like the Jungle Levels] were dissapointing, but Casino Park and Bingo Highway's music nice. If you played the PS2 version, I pity you. It's an absolute SHOCKER of a game. Play the Gamecube version, it's 100x better.

Now here we have a game where we've got about 1:30 of footage, with horrible artifacting in both versions of the videos, and looks very similar to Sonic / Shadows levels in Sonic Adventure 2. You know, the GOOD ONES? In fact, the whole gun thing looks entirely optional in use, I'm sure that a batting on the head will do just the same thing it always did. It looks exactly like e-123 Omega's "Jump + Action" command in Heroes.

Until we know more, just wait :|

I wonder if Sega took this one step further than what the video shows and actually
allows Shadow to dual wield
.

Now I wonder if they also somehow managed to work in a "bullet time" like effect in there somewhere too (instead of "Synopsis Break" maybe a "Shadow Break"?) :lol

The physics of the game sucked, and the rail-like levels sucked.

Again, the levels sucked, and the physics sucked worse.

Really...you'd have to HATE Sonic to like those games.

I'm sorry for the brief rebuttals...but those are my arguements in a nutshell. There are good elements to the games, and they are DECENT and AVERAGE platformers, but if you love Sonic the way he was meant to be, you'd dislike these games.

I did.

I don't think anyone is complaining about the game's mechanics. We all like the running really fast and grinding levels. It's the gun.

That's one of the reasons why I like these threads. Reading posts from Teddman, drohne, and so forth, and then imagining if it were Mario with the gun.

I'd love to see Mario with a gun. For instance, it's about time we had a proper 3D Mario title with fireball powerups. Sunshine is the only Mario game I don't like. Now strap a water jetpack on the back of Sonic and you'd have the opposite reaction from me. ;)

Sure I'm more a fan of Sonic than Mario of late, but another reason I approve of this Shadow game is because it also inches the series closer to the third-person shooter genre, my personal favorite. You may have heard of my fondness for Metal Arms.

I'm intrigued by a game that seems to be "Sonic Adventure meets Ratchet & Clank." I don't think I've ever seen shooting action combined with a platformer that moves at this speed.

There is a pretty big difference between giving Mario back his fireball powerup and a fucking 9mm. I'd like to see him get his fireball powerups too. I would not want to see him with a fucking gun.

I don't think I've ever seen shooting action combined with a platformer that moves at this speed.
Watching that video, I didn't see any interesting dynamic thanks to the corrolation of the gun and the speed. There could be one sure, but that makes no difference to SEGA's decision to put a gun in his hand as opposed to something more faithful to the series/universe/genre/fucking sanity.

I think you're letting your passion for gun control go a bit far. I know about you Canadians, I've seen Bowling For Columbine.

Besides, it's not Sonic with a gun, it's Shadow with a gun. You know, the bad guy. It's more analogous to Bowser packing heat than Mario.

Bowser with a gun would be equally retarded. I know you were joking, but to clarify, I have nothing against guns or games with guns, I own at least 10 games where you shoot you people nice and dead. But giving a platforming character from the Sonic universe a pistol is stupid. It's just dumb.

Giving Tails a mech was a stretch, but you know, it could be worked into the series. Kind of a retaliation to all of Robotnik's mech stuff.

But having a DARK EDGY MYSTERIOUS hedgehog FULL OF ANGER AND SHADOWY FORBODING ADJECTIVES from the Sonic games walking around shooting things with a gun is fucking retarded. I think Ratchet and Clank is an awesome game/series, same with Conker's Bad Fur Day, and both of those games feature furry animals walking around shooting shit up with guns.

But if you can't tell the difference between Conker/Ratchet and the Sonic games, maybe you should re-watch the first 15 seconds of that movie closer before you watch the rest of it.

They really need to get a new engine. Not certain but it looks like they are still using the Sonic Adventure engine (whatever the hell it's called) for this game as well.

I could imagine some incredibly cool gunplay with ultra fast movements (yay for DMC) but I shouldn't be optimistic. Man I pray they have some incredibly skilled level designers on board for this game.

I don't know, if your only problem with the game is the realistic appearence of the gun, I think that's pretty superficial. I get the feeling most people wouldn't mind if he were toting a laser pistol.

Sonic Team is trying an edgier direction, and it probably is influenced somewhat by the latest Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank games. Hell, even Oddworld took a step into 3rd person shooter territory with Stranger's Wrath. Quite successfully too. So what's the big deal, the Sonic series has always skewed a bit to the older side of the platform audience. The character's redesign starting with SA 1 moved it further in that direction.

I can't wait to play this at E3... Those images kick ass, btw.
