Trump places restrictions on individual tourism to Cuba to roll back Obama policy

It's all the mentions of "private sector" that make it easy to understand. It's not about human rights, it's about privatising everything you can to make a profit. Saudi Arabia is good for business with their $100 billion contracts; Cuba isn't. SA also allows full corporate security ie. military bases. When Cuba does the same, any human rights abuses can be happily ignored once again in the pursuit of private profits.

Things definitely do need to change in Cuba but the embargo doesn't help at all, it isn't the greatest as you see skilled workers ditching medical degrees to drive cabs. Anyways it looks like not much is actually changing from the Obama policy. Increasing the dependence of their economy on ours gives us far more influence on being to shift their political situation.

Are expats over exaggerating how bad it is in Cuba? Imagine taking a crazy redneck's opinion on the state of America when Obama was President. You'd think it was hell on earth. Nothing I've seen recently of Cuba would even put it in the worst 50 countries for human rights currently.

Man that sucks. My parents and one of my cousins were going to be visiting Cuba over the next few months. Making sure my parents know Rubio is behind this since they voted for that clown even though they voted Hillary.

Damn the new policies were really helping out the people there. The old ways did not work. The best way to bring change to Cuba is to show them what life should be like, expose them to more and and more cultures so they get away from the government run brainwashing media they have (not thay they are brainwashed, most Cubans know full well of the shit government they have). The restrictions on business working with government owned Cuban business sounds good on paper but I don't trust much of anything from Trump so who knows.

Honestly this shit is frustrating. Only Cuban Americans in Florida really care about what is happening in Cuba. Like this isn't the 1950's.

Wow, no one gives a crap about the people of Cuba except those directly effected, fuck them. Nice stance, yeah let's just ignore the needs of the people cause you aren't related to them...

I live in Florida so I was looking forward to the cheap cruises. Wonder how Cubans (in Cuba) feel about this.

Cuban Americans in Florida need Cuba to be cut off from the US? I lived in south Florida for a long time years ago. And it comes off as "fuck you, got mine" from those stateside.

Yes. Things are not rosy in Cuba politically and things need to change but I have family on the island and if I posted pictures here of my cousins recent graduation for his engineering degree in Havana - about the last thing you would think is that it's some communist hellscape.

My mother was just there in December for a month visiting family in Caimito and my people find a way to make life work and live happy. This policy will do nothing but stifle the growing private industry in the country. It will actively HURT the Cuban people. Period.

Yes, let's go back to the decades-old policies and see if they'll somehow have different results this time. Totally makes sense.

Think you misunderstood me. I'm saying only those hardliners in South FL want the relationship reset to 1950s cold war standards. I'd say majority of Americans would want a similar relationship to what we see with other communist or socialist regimes. Why single out Cuba? In any case, it doesn't appear much actually changed so once Trump leaves, the relationships could be further improved.

No, they are super passionate about their home country, most still have family. Most of these people lost family members, lost their homes, lost their careers, some threw themselves into the ocean for a chance at a new life. Their views are outdated, but their reasoning comes from a place of pain, to see the the country you made your new life in work with the killers and murderers that were responsible for the death or imprisonment of your family. You maybe overly emotional too.

There maybe some assholes in the bunch but the majority are doing this from a place of pain cause they care that much.

Oh ok, yeah I misunderstood then. I thought you were just like "who cares about Cuba, it's not 1950 anymore, let's not talk about them"

Yes I agree with your stance on this. As does most of the Cuban American next generation that I am a part of.

you can't put a price on sparks
At least it isn't a complete roll back which is what I was most afraid of.

In some sense this may be good for Puerto Rico at least since they are in an economic crunch.

That said, I don't agree with this policy, but it could have been worse...

Fuck this. Was looking forward to go visit there.

It sucks, but don't worry, you'll be able to tour Cuba when we get our next president.

Man, why does donald hate obama so much :(

Because he's everything the orange shitstain isn't: Young, intelligent, charismatic, fit, popular, and competent at his job.

It's straight-up jealousy of the worst possible kind, and it's sad that it has to affect the entire world.

According to CNN, this new embargo is to give his company not even a competitive edge, but a disincentive to his competitors.

Miami (CNN)The proposed changes in US-Cuba relations that President Donald Trump will unveil Friday in Miami could adversely impact hotel brands that directly compete with Trump's business empire, making it more difficult for them expand their foothold in Cuba.

Trump's changes in Cuba policy include prohibiting "financial transactions, including transactions incidental to travel with GAESA and its affiliates, subsidiaries, and successors," according to documents reviewed by CNN. Gaviota, the tourism arm of the government-run GAESA, currently operates the Four Points by Sheraton Havana, a hotel that, when it opened, was the first US hotel to open in Cuba in nearly 60 years.

I mean, regardless of the Castro regime's crimes or actions decades ago, who does this embargo even help anymore? All it does is severely disadvantage the Cuban people, and give Americans one fewer tourist spot I guess.

Espectacular.......

I'm starting to think that Trump is only the front face for the GOP to move along in destroying all the things that Obama created and push the USA to the path they want. While Trump keeps filling his pockets with money on side deals.

Once done , Trump will step aside (on his own) and President Pence will take over and the people will cheer this move, but Pence is even worse.

Pandaman

Everything is moe to me
I have a trip to Cuba planned next month

Will Trump's stupid policy affect my trip???
Depends.

The biggest change in travel policy will be that Americans making educational people-to-people trips, one of the most popular authorized categories, can no longer go to the island on their own but only on group tours. Trump's aides said the aim was to close off a path for Americans seeking beach vacations in a country where U.S. tourism is still officially banned.
