Just picked up my daughter from school and started to tell her about the upcoming reveal and she already knew. Word is traveling fast.

Here is a fresh one....

An anonymous, but totally verified, source within Microsoft contacted us early this morning with a slew of official details about Microsoft’s next entry into the console arena, including system specs, functionality, a name, and some things that nobody was expecting.

Name

“Box.” It’s the ultimate expression of Microsoft’s attempts to make their console more than just a console, but rather a single device that fulfills all of a home’s media needs and more (we’ll get to the “and more”). Not only does the name become more inclusive of the hardware’s widened horizons, but it rolls off the tongue more easily, and, however slightly, improves the names for those who suffer from hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. Short, simple, and snazzy.

◦Processor: An unannounced collaboration between Microsoft and Intel resulting in a processor that has been designed exclusively for the Box. The Box will boast a dual processor setup, with each x86-64 processor sporting 16 cores with HyperThreading, expanding the 32 physical cores to a total of 64 physical and virtual cores as needed.
◦Memory: GDDR5 16GB
◦HDD: The Box will provide multiple storage options. All SKUs will be loaded with SSD storage, allowing for nearly instant console activation and operation. The capacities will range from 256GB in the low end model to 1TB in the premium model. The Box’s OS will be given a dedicated 128GB SSD on all models, separate from storage, to allow for OS operation, avatar items, applications, and other relevant files.
◦OS: The Box will run Windows 8, allowing for easy development of cross-platform gameplay between PC and Box users.
◦Optical: The Box will use a Blu-Ray drive

Core Functionality

The Box will retain the obvious ability to play video games, movies, music, and more. The user interface will be drastically different than what console users are accustomed to, however, with the introduction of Windows 8 as the operating platform. This opens the Box up to functionality that had been previously restricted (or in certain cases, should have been restricted) to personal computers, including word processing, database maintenance, social media, porn, and more. As a bonus, it has been confirmed that not only will the Box play used games, it will also not require a constant Internet connection…in certain cases. More on that in the “LIVE” section below.

Microsoft has been completely rancid and annoying with their content and focus the past two years. I cant get fired up for this.

The fact this conference is only 1 hour could mean they'll focus mainly on games. They'd need more time to talk about the console and the games.

The thing is that regardless of what apps and other uses the 720 will have and regardless of what future Microsoft see for the console, they still know that the main reason why anyone will be buying an XBOX is for games first and foremost and Microsoft are fine with that otherwise they could release a much cheaper set top box to do all the other stuff if they weren't interested in games anymore.

I'm thinking May will be 65-35 other stuff to games ratio while E3 will be more like 70-30 games to other stuff ratio.

If Microsoft really is trying to be your cable passthrough/casual gamer destination/living room entertainment device were going to get a lot of stuff on the App's, cable stuff, entertainment functionality, kinect features, online infastructure, and then probably tidbits of games here and there. Most likely a few 1st party games and some kinect centric games.

E3 will have the bigger game push IMO. I also think if always online is real they ignore it both in May and E3.

Yeah. E3 will be the game event for sure. I do think they will try to show off a big Kinect game at the May event, though, maybe Ryse. I could see them spending a lot of time on a big reveal demo showing off how it's possible to make a Kinect-controller-hybrid core game. I also think we'll see one other game that doesn't show Kinect use at all to keep it balanced. I think every other game will be saved for E3. A very small taste of games. The rest will be hardware, services, and their vision.

I hope they show a solid bunch of games. I don't wanna wait until E3 to know more.

I think we will either see a reasonably long compilation video and maybe one or two live games or the show will be mostly games being shown and they will wait until the E3 conference to talk about all the other uses etc.

They can't even pay me to be excited, but I'll see if I can watch it. I do not expect to be amazed at all.

Eh. I'm 100% set on getting a PS4. And yeah, I've been down on Nextbox, especially because I wasn't a fan of the 2nd half of 360's life cycle. BUT as an enthusiast to this hobby, I always get excited regardless when a new console/gadget is announced. Either way (positive or negative), it will have an impact on our hobby.

Hell, I even got excited for Wii U. Yeah....

YEAH

I think it's a pretty bad time to be honest. It's right in the middle of most of America's work/school day.

I like what someone else said about it. It is early enough so that people getting home from work will hear about it on the news. MS is banking more of a word of mouth advertisement rather than a "everybody watch it live" strategy.

Anyone who actually think it will be called 'Box' are delusional lol.

I think its interesting they say "Don Mattrick and the xbox team" on the invites.

Trying to kill rumours of Don jumping back to EA?

I thought that was a little crazy too. And honestly that is the only reason why I could see them doing this. I think Mattrick has helped the Xbox a lot, but by no means would I consider him the godfather of Xbox (enough to put his name separate from the rest of the team)

I'm excited and have enjoyed this thread, but at this point I've been up for more than 24 hrs and need to sleep. I hope I wake up to some crazy leaks, awesome GIFs, and some legit hype.

You should make a new thread, and send it in to vgleaks.

Unless Matrick shows up.

The only thing that'll convince me to grab this is if Alan Wake 2 is a launch title and I don't have to pay for online.

I think the only console I'm sure I'll be getting is Wii U. But surely the first answer will be "why!? it has a lineup currently outclassed by the Vita!" but that's because Nintendo games are almost always worth playing when they try. Sony's hook for me is third parties (MGS5 having any version planned for PS4 would make me buy the machine), and Microsoft...well, their entire approach, and even the franchises that 'define' their system don't do shit for me, so it's more of a platform for franchises I couldn't care less about. The 'home' of Cowwadooty and Halo is not a station I board, sadly.

You were not in that boat alone. I'm just glad that I didn't bank on what I perceived the tablet doing for gaming (because imo it hasn't done that much) and go out and purchase one quickly.

Very nice. Almost match mine, but one CPU and different RAM.

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
Stupid why? Because it's inconvenient for you? 10 AM PST is pretty standard for press conferences to get the most exposure and media coverage. Theres a reason Apple has all their conferences at 10 AM as well.

Ya it's not as if NA is their largest market by far or anything</sarcasm>

Right smack dab in the middle of the day too. Pretty much guaranteed to miss this as I'm not skipping work for it.

For reference, the 360 unveiling was at 9:30pm ET on a Thursday night.
